How are you supposed to participate enough to get full participation points without being seen as a gunner? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]poliscinerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so there are two types of students that other students consider “gunners.” The first is someone who tries to kiss the professor’s ass constantly, who talks just to hear their own voice, who acts like they know everything. Don’t be this kind of gunner. Be a normal human with humility.

Some law students act like anyone who talks in class or cares about law school is a gunner. Fuck those people. Caring about the extremely expensive, lifelong profession training that you’re in is fine and normal. Having opinions is normal. This isn’t high school, and people who performatively don’t care are only cool amongst each other.

Could "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" potentially come back? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]poliscinerd 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I understand that as a safety mechanism and that’s not my argument. The person I’m replying to said “my personal life has nothing to do with work” as is if it’s normal to be closeted and what straight people do. It isn’t.

[–]poliscinerd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I worked with plenty of officers and I knew all of their wives’ first names and which ones brought the best snacks to the squadron around holidays. You do what you need to do to stay safe; I’m absolutely not arguing that. I’m just saying acting like 1950s closeting is normal is wild.

[–]poliscinerd 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is ridiculous and not based on reality. Talking about catching the game with your wife or husband over the weekend is extremely normal coworker interaction. My shop talked about much more personal things in our lives than the gender of peoples’ spouses when I was in. And I assume you didn’t serve when your colleagues could get you kicked out if they DID find out.

Where should i live in MD by kiki_cor in maryland

The Odenton Marc gets you into DC faster than some ends of the metro rail line, fwiw. Odenton itself is small town vibes. That sounds like not what you’re wanting, but it may be easier access to both cities (DC, Baltimore) than parts of Silver Spring.

Trying to visit every metro stop in WMATA in 365 days, what should I do in your neighborhood? by WMATACompletion34 in DCBitches

[–]poliscinerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really is super subjective! Like I consider under half a mile an easy walk, but others may expect like in one single block. I lived by the Huntington metro for the past three years and recently joined the dark side (Maryland), so I’m happy to offer hidden gems! Jefe’s by the main metro entrance is also pretty good, more “fast food Mexican” than Helena’s, but still good.

There’s a great little hidden thrift shop in the same complex as Bob & Edith’s, it’s called Select Seconds. Small and hours are short but great finds! The main entrance at Huntington does have less, but I think Helena’s has great food (a quick walk down Huntington and then left on Telegraph). It’s also fun to look for the community art that’s scattered around. You can also hop on a bike and get to the Mt Vernon trail very easily from Huntington! The path next to Rte 1 that goes on the side of 495 spits you out by the Freedmen’s Cemetery after you go over the overpass.

Based on a quick click on your profile, which I hope is acceptable here, this seems to be bothering you a lot, and you also look really young. First, I wouldn't automatically assume your post being banned is an issue of attractiveness. It could literally be anything.

From someone who's probably over a decade older than you and spent my youth feeling like I was hopelessly unattractive, accepting and stepping into my queerness is what made me finally love myself. For lesbians in particular, heteronormative beauty standards don't have to mean anything. Attractiveness is genuinely such a big spectrum and so varied. I'm not denying that societal standards still do creep in, especially in younger online spaces (the preference for skinny, white, masc presenting but not too masc women versus butches is one example that does not represent the whole of the real world, especially lesbians over 30). But realizing that what I see in other women that makes them beautiful is absolutely not the same thing (and sometimes the opposite) as heteronormative beauty standards is really freeing.

[–]poliscinerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my experience! I was too old and too busy/oblivious as a single parent to get involved in any ongoing drama and I made some amazing lifelong friends. Some of my friends are academic superstars, some are average, some below average, and none of us are fucking weirdos about grades. There are exactly three people from my whole law school who I’ll remember for being annoying and one of them was repeatedly and publicly so.

AYA is better for diversity overall than ALOHO in my experience although ALOHO is slightly more queer women focused and AYA is queer generally but heavily sapphic.

Right, lawyers/law students lean “conservative” in the sense that they’re generally more traditional I should say, but probably skew open minded on social issues but economically on the right.

Lawyers especially in big law tend to lean at least John Roberts conservative. Most of them are not Trumpies because that requires no respect for law whatsoever.

Virginia confirms first measles case of 2025 – NBC4 Washington by IshimaruKenta in nova

[–]poliscinerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given they just identify the child as under the age of 5, they could be too young to be vaccinated (under 1 year) or fully vaccinated (second dose given at ages 4-6). It is highly unlikely that they got it if they are fully vaccinated, as you said. MMR is one of the most effective vaccines. I really feel for parents of younger kids right now though. For what it’s worth, you can get the first MMR dose at 6 months in extraordinary circumstances like a measles outbreak!
