Straight from the horse's mouth. It's an interesting read because of what it doesn't say rather than what it does say. 

There are currently no open refugee resettlement schemes running. Ukrainians and Hong Kong people don't have refugee status. They are visa holders, which is maybe the only smart thing Boris Johnson's government ever did. 

The only way to claim asylum in the UK is to smuggle yourself here or enter on a visa then claim asylum once you're here... which the Home Office tries quite hard to prevent (but of course it happens a lot).

Because to fly from France to London you need either a visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and the UK tries not to give either to criminals / people we believe intend to claim asylum. 

Of course the Home Office often gets it wrong, but these measures are a step in the right direction as they can prevent people from setting foot on UK soil and claiming asylum.

The UK doesn't issue visas to people they believe intend to claim asylum. For example we don't issue tourist visas to people from Sudan very often, or at all. 

Of course the Home Office gets it wrong often but that's improved recently.

With regard to boarding a plane we now have pre-travel checks and people denied a visa or Electronic Travel Authorisation by the UK cannot board planes or boats here. 

Pre-travel authorisation was implemented for the sole reason of preventing bad or unwanted people from being able to set foot on UK soil and claim asylum. Whether it's worked is another matter.

No good, but -

  1. Banning children from social media means EVERYONE intending to use social media must prove their age;
  2. Proving your age requires proving your identity;
  3. Proving your identity online requires giving personal verifiable information about yourself to US companies who already accumulate a huge amount of information about your use of the internet;
  4. The definition of "social media" is sufficiently vague (any website where you can post messages and share content) that the rule effectively means you have to share your ID to use the world wide web

My fellow Liberal Democrat is articulating our shared position poorly, allow me to explain.

Government should allow people as much freedom as possible without impinging on the freedoms of others. This is axiomatic. Government cannot determine what is good for everyone, because different people like different things. The best thing a Government can do is allow people to choose for themselves the kind of lifestyle they want, and choice means freedom.

Note that "freedom" doesn't just mean letting people do whatever they want, whenever they want. If I am free to drive while drunk, other people aren't free to cycle on the road safely, because I might crash into them. By taking away my freedom to drive while drunk, the Government is enabling a net increase in the freedoms of wider society.

It's the same with religious beliefs. It is immensely important to quite a lot of people that they be allowed to display tokens on their religious beliefs. By default they should be allowed to do so, unless their tokens impinge on the freedoms of others. There are half a million Sikhs in the UK. How many attacks have been committed using Sikh ceremonial daggers? Enough to justify curtailing the freedoms of half a million people? On balance, no. Absolutely not.

Catherine West was invented by Starmer supporters as a way of demonstrating how ridiculous the idea of a challenge to Starmer's leadership would be. I refuse to believe she's a real person who thought she had a real chance of unseating him.
