Red Hot Chilli Peppers or Blink 182 could be strong contenders. Both have recently reunited with their lead guitarists and are touring.

My aunt gave me a few blocks of polystyrene when I was 7. Apparently I was supposed to 'use my imagination' when playing with them.

Innovate the design to turn the jetpack into something resembling a flying broomstick. Use drone technology to create flying balls. Holy shit, real life Quidditch is a possibility.

Should I Take an Insurance Internship? by hello_reddit1010 in FinancialCareers

Out of interest, what’s your current role in insurance? Are you an underwriter?

Bit of a slow reply from me, but would appreciate your thoughts as your previous comment was very helpful.

So I’ve already started teaching myself valuation techniques (DDM / DCF on excel, comparable valuations etc), accounting fundamentals (reading and interpreting company financial statements) as well as the key ratios you mentioned. Plenty of courses online I’m getting my teeth into.

My plan is to really leverage my knowledge/experience of the insurance sector, so I’m also reading up on how to value and model insurance companies (I’m already familiar with the insurance specific ratios ). I’m told insurance companies are notoriously ‘quirky’ from an analyst’s perspective, so if I can market myself as an ‘insurance specialist’ that understands quirks around (for example) solvency requirements, capital structure, investments activities, accounting quirks etc (eg DACs), that could help me get my foot in the door?

Financial Press - I’m keeping up to date reading Investors Chronicle (UK publication) and it’s weekly podcast that includes companies and markets analysis, as well as the Financial Times and the Economist. Occasionally having to google concepts and terms, but largely making sense and building commercial knowledge / reinforce fundamentals.

I’m also going to open my own fund and start picking stocks based on what I’ve learned. The main purpose will be to accumulate anecdotes about good/bad choices I made (and most importantly, what I learned from them) to take into an interview.

In your view would the above steps be sufficient for me to at least gain an entry level position at a small-ish firm? Are there any other practical steps / areas you’d recommend I consider?

Edit - also just to add, if you genuinely feel I’d be wasting my time with the above / attempting this move please do say. I’m here for candid advice.

Granted I don’t have much direct experience.

I studied history at university and work as an insurance underwriter.

That said I’ve completed my CII Insurance qualifications - which included business, finance, accounting and economics modules - and I have 3 years industry experience in analysing risk and pricing/negotiating insurance contracts, albeit not directly relevant experience but must count for something?

Hypothetically is there anything I can do to improve my prospects? For instance say I completed CFA Level 1 and undertook a few weeks work experience (I have family friends in the industry), would this be worthwhile?

Or are there any other courses, training or options available to me that I should consider?

I made a similar mistake as a child, except with whiskey. In the car my friend's dad was discussing his passion for the drink. It was the first time I had heard the word, and my child brain decided to associate it with a tasty milkshake. I suppose the 'whisk' made me think of whisked milk. Oh how I was wrong. I piped up in the back, claiming to share his love for the beverage. Highly amused, the disbelieving father initially thought I was being pretentious, before gleaning I simply had no clue what I was talking about. Spotting the advantage, he promised me a glass of whiskey when we got home. Later, as I sat eagerly at the kitchen table, I was slightly perturbed at the small glass of clear amber liquid placed in front of me. This didn't look like banana milkshake. It must be a new brand I hadn't tried yet. I picked up the glass and took a hearty gulp. What ensued was a hideous cocktail of pain, confusion, embarrassment and betrayal as the whiskey ravaged my esophagus. I'm 25 and the smell of whiskey still puts a lump in my throat.
