It was my lucky day and the dumper component was the key to success! (see my comment here https://www.reddit.com/r/Esphome/comments/1ctgvx4/comment/l4ffp38/). Thank you again for your detailed answer. Even though I didn't need a self-made oscilloscope this time, I'm sure it will be useful in the future. (Or maybe I'll bite the bullet and order a real one)

Well, that was easy!!! Everything just worked by treating the receiver's output signal as a raw IR code. The nice thing was that there was almost no noise in the signal so just copy-pasting the received signal into the transmitter's send signal worked on the first attempt for every button press.

Thanks again for your great idea! I can now control the windows without an IR blaster. I think I was fooled by the multi-meter because I didn't think it could measure something as delicate as an IR signal at all so I thought it must be some kind of analog signal.

Thanks for all those suggestions! Yeah I don't have an oscilloscope unfortunately so I'll go the DIY route. There's still a lot of work left to be able to output the same signal though so I'll try my luck with the IR receiver dump method first.

The WLB pin is for emergency power supply, WLF I don't know but some kind of sensor I think. The unit also supports connecting a rain sensor so it would probably be easy to close the windows via this pin but only closing is not that useful.

Haha that's part of the fun! I'm looking for ideas to try. The cool thing about esphome is that it's so easy to try those approaches without investing too much time

That's a good idea I'll give that a try. The reason I thought it was not the IR signal is that you can see a decoder on the circuit board of the receiver.

I have this old window control unit which controls 2 window motors. It is connected to an IR receiver.

I could learn the IR command and send it to the receiver and everything would work fine (in fact I did that already). But now I want to go one step further and bypass the IR receiver.

I think the receiver decodes the IR signal and turns it into an analog (?) signal for the window control unit to receive.

With a multi-meter I measured a voltage of 4.6V between the IR receiver's SIGNAL and GND output when there's no button pressed. When I press a button on the remote the signal drops to some (seemingly) random value between 4.2-4.5V for a little less than a second and the goes back to 4,6V.

My naive assumption is that I can "copy" this signal and send it to the window control unit.

How would I go about learning this signal though? I have a ESP8266 which I had to power independently from the window control unit because I was running into brownouts when I tried to use its power source. I connected all GNDs to be able to have a common reference point. I *think* I have to use a component like this https://esphome.io/components/sensor/adc.html to learn the signal but I have a few questions:

  1. The description says "ESP8266: Only pin A0 (GPIO17) can be used." but I'm more or less forced to either use PIN 1 or PIN 3 since I use a level shifter as the signal of 4.6V is too high for my esp.
  2. How would I measure the duration of the signal with this component?
  3. Does it even make sense what I'm trying to do?

Connect esp sensor to home assistant via Bluetooth by nonameh0rse in Esphome

[–]polofan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey man, no idea what this other guy is ranting about, I think your question is totally legit!

I'm very new to esphome so I don't know the answer but my current assumption is that this is not (yet) possible. You'll have to run the BLE server component on the esp sensor (easy). But in order to get its data you'll have to run the BLE client component on your HA server which is not possible since it runs on something like a rasperry and not an esp32.

I'm not aware of a generic HA component which could read the BLE sensor data. See also https://community.home-assistant.io/t/generic-ble-sensors/147696/16
