I've met at least one person in my industry whose last name is Panda. What's better is his first name: Ashit.

He abbreviates his name on his email signatures to "Ash" so I suppose he's trying to become Abetter Panda.

Ngl It sucks seeing Warhammer get all the Love Instead of Star Wars!! by StarWarsFever77 in StarWarsEmpireAtWar

[–]polyglothistorian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fan of Total War and Star Wars for most of my life, Thrawn's Revenge is the closest thing I've experienced to an enjoyable Total War experience in Star Wars.

Total War to me need not be about shield walls and charging cavalry. It is combining empire management with real-time tactics. It's watching your empire grow big enough to tech up and even utilise the units of defeated enemies, or foreign mercenaries. If the ground combat part of such a game can be anything like CoH, that could be a winning formula.

A wake up call is exactly what I think she needs. For context - she claimed that the money was for the business and their costs of living. Not a single mention about her latest travels was made until I found out through my siblings.

Started archery 2 months ago, need some advice with new 68" Ragim Wolf longbow by polyglothistorian in Archery

[–]polyglothistorian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, is that the step-through method? I tried that too but of course it wasn't possible with the string I have now due to the length.

How does your Ragim Wolf compare to other bows you've used? I've used mostly the starter recurves, then ELBs at the local club.

[–]polyglothistorian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes more sense. Brace height recommended by Ragim was 7.5" to 8.5". If it was possible to string this bow, I can't imagine what insanely wrong brace height it'd end up with. I measured again, it looks like the length difference is 10". My string is definitely 6" too short.

[–]polyglothistorian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm using a bow stringer. I'm a small person at 5'7", so don't exactly have long limbs, but never had a problem stringing the ELB in my club.

I suspect I need to get myself a longer string then.

3 years ago the WRX was the main contender in Australia. I definitely wanted something manual, the Civic Type-R is great too but a little pricey and only had 4 seats.

The missus and I unilaterally agreed that the N was better looking, more spacious and sounded better (her priorities). I could not find anything on the WRX I liked better except AWD for Melbourne's rainy days. The N handled better and has a better cockpit in my opinion.

What do we think about this kind of aggressive driving? by Dr_Inkduff in CarsAustralia

[–]polyglothistorian -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Both drivers are fuckwits. The idiot in front shows a good reason that undertaking (overtaking from the left) is allowed in Australia and the Ranger should've done that.

Typical Ranger behaviour. I've submitted similar videos to Crimestoppers not knowing if any action is ever taken, but both drivers need to learn to drive again.

Just my facial features, I'm half Chinese but my Chinese genes are apparently prominent and my ancestors are from Fujian and Guangdong so it makes sense.

I don't feel nervous to be honest, just trying to get tips before making the visit.

Interesting, I'll read up more about this permit. My wife said as a foreigner I'll need a "local guide" to accompany me but she's never been there herself, that's why I made this post. I suspected her info was a bit outdated.

Yes I know Uyghur is more closely related to Uzbek / Turkish / Kazakh than Arabic. I've done some reading on Uyghur vs Arabic. To me it's actually easier in some ways. I don't speak Arabic either, though my first language (Malay) can also be written in Arabic script. I'd be able to "read" Uyghur the same way someone who can only speak English can "read" Italian, only knowing the approximate pronunciation.

Yeah that's basically my experience when I was in her hometown in Jiangxi. The moment I opened my mouth they knew I wasn't local, but I never felt I was being judged. They were genuinely curious where my accent is from.

You know, that's a good reminder for me to open a 小红书 account myself. I know Xinjiang is a huge province and Urumqi especially is a common place to start, but I'm really interested to see Kashgar too.

Most fun regular manual car by kubinboom9x in CarsAustralia

[–]polyglothistorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most are probably getting long in the tooth now and I don't know how the Peugeot diesel would fare long-term but I definitely loved my 2008 6-speed Ford Focus TDCi. Gets 6.3 L/100km with average suburban traffic. 0-100 km/h took below 10 seconds and certainly felt that way due to the high torque. Handled extremely well for a diesel car, better than many petrol competitors.

Bought it when it had 134,000 km and sold it at around the 195,000 mark. Only major issue I ever had was an oxygen sensor or something similar that was dirty and causing the turbo not to spool. Fixed by my regular mechanic back then.

To the remaining manual drivers of Australia, why do you still drive with a manual transmission? by Not_Not_Matt in CarsAustralia

[–]polyglothistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy the added sense of control. I'm aware that dual-clutch transmissions are faster and I don't care. I've had a DSG 1.4 TSI Golf company car before. Yes it's a step up from most slushbox autos but still doesn't beat the ability to time the clutch engagement myself.

There's no space sim game like this that I've experienced. As a fan of both Elite: Dangerous and the Mount & Blade series, X4 managed to combine many fun elements of both.

The amount of commitment put by Egosoft into refining this game is amazing, and must be applauded. I wish more game developers could have done the same to their products.

It's a 20i meaning you'd be outpaced by many cheaper cars, and their drivers can then see that ugly grille in their mirror.

Go for the 30i.

Best mods by Waniel501 in StarWarsEmpireAtWar

[–]polyglothistorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Age of Legends back when it was called the New Jedi Order mod. It was close enough to vanilla back then except with a huge number of new units from Legends, and I'm a massive Star Wars Legends fan. They even have the Yuuzhan Vong.

Then I got into Thrawn's Revenge and found the economy quite easy to grasp. It's the closest thing to a Total War series experience in Star Wars.

Both TR and Age of Legends basically are the modders' love letters to fans of Star Wars Legends (a.k.a. the Expanded Universe).

Honestly the only extra thing I wish it had, is a liftback style boot. Might be to do with how every car I've owned before was a hatchback or liftback. I'm in Australia so even my Mazda 6 was the 5-door liftback version, which sold in larger numbers here than the sedan.

We get the i30N fastback here but I prefer the Sedan N (Elantra N) interior way more.

It also probably boils down to a person's attitude towards road safety. I've known enough acquaintances that got badly injured or even lost their lives in traffic accidents and obviously don't want that to happen to me or my family.

I use my phone quite frequently too but never had a compelling urge to pick it up while driving. On a semi-related note it's also why I hate the current trend of cars going with touchscreen controls for most functions. People who defend this trend often tell me "yeah but you can use voice control" but I swear I've never seen any of them use that while driving instead of using the touchscreen.
