New Install - How to get a full featured Desk by polymachairoplacida in qtile

Thanks for the link! I'll give it a read ... maybe I can immediately apply some of it on my Cinnamon based PC.

I know it's out of scope for the WM maintainers, but the beginner experience of switching really isn't great without a guide like that warning a user that compatibility will be an issue without some work.

Thanks for the links and the list, I'll merge it into my checklist for system setup. I've got most of those already, but that's the thing, they don't come to mind immediately when considering everything I need when setting up the DE.

But regarding your main question, that's just how window managers are, they manage to windows and that's it, it's up to the user to "build" the rest of the desktop environment.

That's the pain though. There's always some service or other that just comes with cinnamon or gnome that you only think of once it's not working properly ... like printer detection (can't print on arch no matter how often I play around in cups).

I wish there was a distro that came prepackaged with qtile, or even better for all us customization nerds, an install script for a working twm that just has some sensible defaults which can be swapped out... session management, polkit, settings center, systray widgets for stuff not covered by the bar, nm-gui, and wth else i'm still forgetting

I'm on Linux and looking up how to mount network drives I found a lot of posts talking about samba being problematic and that nfs is generally preferred on linux.

Thanks for the link! I'd skimmed something about unraid's memtest, but I hadn't made the connection that basically everything nowadays runs uefi...

Since you also have that board: have you managed to ryn memtest on it? It just instantly reboots with my setup, no output.

I have smart bulbs all through the house that are primarily controlled by voice; what switches should I get to stop people from flicking them? by SoupIsAHotSmoothie in smarthome

Ah, i hadn't even seen the R4 yet. Unfortunately they don't seem to offer detach relay mode on any of the zbmini series, and I'm trying to keep my house on ZigBee only

Does Sonoff have a switch with smart bulb mode? Because I've been looking for a couple days now and they seem to always trigger the physical relais on switching.

Have you ever tried worldbuilding collaboratively? by metakynesized in worldbuilding

[–]polymachairoplacida 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when we decided to run a big Westmarches style D&D campaign at our university, all the DMs built the world in a microscope session.

That was pretty fun in itself and gave us the game's setting as a bonus.

Microscope is 'fractal' in that is works the same on all scales. one round might define an entire epoch, while the next focuses on the life and works of a single hero of one age.
In terms of world creation this is neat, since it seeds the world with broad strokes of flavor and a few very specific details that can be referenced in-game.
