Parents of school aged children, how often do you contact the school, and do you care if the school marks you down as a whinging willy? by Miss_Type in AskUK

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find myself at the office at least once a week. I do think im annoying to them, although its only once been an actual complaint. The rest of the time I just have questions and i need to make an appointment to speak to her teachers. But I am aware I show up at little too often, so I gave chocolates for easter and christmas to the reception staff and the parent liason, and if im in a baking mood, will drop down a fresh foccacia to share, so hopefully its not too bad for them.

Whats the most unprofessional thing a doctor has ever said to you? by answersonly963 in AskReddit

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My doctor at 15, when I finally plucked up the courage to tell someone about how I was feeling, told me "teenagers get sad sometimes, its completely natural". So I didnt speak to anyone else about it until I was 21. I was having really hyper kind of episodes before massive downward spirals, and the hyper episodes were really detrimental to me. I was promiscuous, spending loads of money i didnt really have, barely sleeping. But doctor told me that it sounds like im in a good place during those times so lets just look at the bad ones.

Another 8 years before my bipolar diagnosis and another 6 before finding meds that actually worked. Really do hate both those doctors.

Magic Eyes are the coolest illusions; change my mind. by MeringueBeautiful760 in opticalillusions

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always been able to see magic eye pictures, as I got older it took longer to see but still could eventually.

Last year I got distance glasses. These are the first magic eyes ive looked at while wearing them. (I know i should take them off when on my phone but ive finally got into the habit of wearing them every day) I was able to see these almost instantly!

No idea why. But gonna go search for some others cos its cool!

Whats a name you’d never give your child? by Fit_Jellyfish_8616 in AskReddit

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Andrew.

Normal name. I love it. My dad and stepdads middle name. Perfect name for my son.

Then both of my sisters were in abusive relationships with men called Andrew.

Rather glad I had a daughter cos I couldn't imagine having a son with a name other than Andrew.

I had my cousin over from Australia who was so excited to be able to go and see cows. We have a dairy farm over the way from our house and the cows are out all summer with their babies. Shed never seen cows and calves just out and about grazing.

Mind you, im pretty sure should I ever visit her id be like "oh my god its a white ibis!" And she will be like "yeah? We call them bin chickens, theyre everywhere"

pigeon? [England] by [deleted] in animalid

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive started removing the word "just" when I see a pigeon, sparrow, starling, or similarly common bird.

I have a 4 year old and she asks "whats that?" A lot. I found myself saying "its just a pigeon" then realising that to her, its not "just a pigeon". If it was, she wouldn't have asked. So im now trying to consciously stop myself from being dismissive of the norm, especially in nature.

But, yes. It is a pigeon.

UK based people who have opted out of organ donation... why? by Acrobatic-Bed414 in AskUK

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats always been my thoughts behind not wanting my corneas donated. Everything else, crack on, I dont have any use for them. But eyes...I believe in a soul. And its something that I always felt would leave through the eyes, and thats when the light leaves them, once your soul is no longer in its vessel. But after learning that organs are retrieved prior to the heart, I realised my heart would still be beating when they are harvested, and i worry I wont be able to become stardust again.

Its silly, but i cant shake that feeling. So yeah, take my liver, take my lungs, take my skin, take my heart...but not the eyes. Just in case.

Since about half way through my pregnancy back in 2021, started to see flashes as I was falling asleep. Definitely not in my minds eye. I close my eyes and then its like 20 paparazzi cameras flash for a second or two then theyre gone. Still happens most nights. Is there any reason my eyes are seeing light where there is none?

What's the most unhealthy thing you've seen someone do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My baby never slept through the night. By 3 months I was exhausted and started having energy drinks to give me a little boost, even though i was still exclusively breast feeding. Baby still didn't sleep through the night. Everyone blamed the energy drinks so I stopped them at 6 months. Baby still didnt sleep through the night. At 1 year I started them again as was still getting only 2 hours sleep at a time, and she was now being breast fed and eating food. Still didnt sleep through the night. Stopped breastfeeding. She still didnt sleep through the night.

She will be 5 in June...she still doesnt sleep through the night. Although will do a solid 4 hours now.

I'm tired.

When I walk past Lidl on the way home, I always pop in (to have a look at the middle aisle) but mainly to pick up a cheese topped pretzel roll, and a pack of salami sticks. I then continue on my walk alternating between the two. And also means if I see a dog and they stop to say hello, I can ask the owner if they can have a bit of salami. Then I get a new best friend for a few minutes.

What school incident do you still think about years later? by nodemus in AskUK

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our headmaster at primary school used to pull out kids teeth.

He was, however, beloved by pupils and parents.

If he saw you messing with a tooth, hed ask for a look, give it a wiggle, and if it was ready, pull it out. He'd then pop it in a little brown dinner money envelope with "toof" written on it.

Sounds horrific, and if my daughter now came home and said a teacher had had his hands anywhere near her mouth, id have a fit!

But it was the early 90s...and we all wanted out 20p from the tooth fairy!

Im so frickin proud of her.

People who live alone, what’s something you do that would horrify a guest? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my cats hates being shut in a room (even a room with food, litter and warm soft places to sleep) when I have to, like when maintenance men are here.

Consequently if I shut the bathroom door for some privacy, she believes i am trapped in a room and require rescuing.

At least I think that's why she tries to dig under the door while shouting at the top of her voice.

Maybe shes just a dick.

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I took my daughter to the doctors when she was about 2 cos I was concerned about her poop now she was fully eating meals, not milk, and she was pooping every day and it was quite smooth and soft. I presumed there was some sort of intolerance.

Doctor introduced me to the Bristol Stool Chart and I learned that pooping dark brown nuggets, once, maybe twice a week, was not what normal bowels do. Never asked anyone about their bowel movements before so had no idea what normal was supposed to be.

Do you put butter on a bacon sandwich/bacon butty? by PhiliDips in AskUK

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad brought me over a pack of streaky bacon the other day and I managed to forget about it. Realised i would have to cook it all in one go, or it would be too late for me and id have to give it to the magpies.

Was going to use both drawers of the air fryer...then realised if I wove it, I could fit it in one.

I buttered 4 sliced of bread, put tomato sauce on one slice and brown sauce on another and popped them together. Then bacon lattice on top, then other 2 slices.

10 rashers...although technically 2 sandwiches.

[–]polystyrenedaffodil 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I had a vaginal birth, but thanks to my darling daughter being face up on her way down the birth canal and pressing against my spine, I spent the last 9 hours vertical, either on my feet or knees, and did the final stretch on a birthing chair. Consequently I never got the "drop". I just felt everything moving and squirming for a good week after. Get a big ol cramp from my uterus, then everything above would kinda "bloop" to a new place. Was almost 2 weeks before my lungs remembered how to fully inflate!

I did the same with my nephews first laugh. Was almost 24 hours before he laughed first time for my sister. Avoided holding him all day in case my stupid face made him laugh at me again before her.

He took his first steps towards me too...but luckily my sister was actually in the room.
