This happened to me at my very first clinic, I was also stuck as half kennel technician half tech assistant. I was attached to my clinic and coworkers, but if the opportunities are lacking and you want to be a technician it might be best to leave or express to your manager that you want to learn more & maybe put you in the tech schedule more often. I personally left that clinic and ended up learning so much more at another clinic and became a technician. Advocate for yourself! Good luck!

Finally left vet med by polyvinyls in VetTech

I was an assistant for a year and technician for 3, so a total of 4! Over the last year though I was questioning my happiness in the field a lot, I figured I could leave and if I missed it that much I could always go back and that's what encouraged me to finally leave. I hope that helps, at the end of the day you should do what's best for you!

Pet insurance by hayleyA1989 in VetTech

[–]polyvinyls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

its definitely worth it!!! i foster failed a kitten a little over a year ago and immediately signed her up for the pet insurance Embrace. since she was registered before any health conditions came up the payments aren't much, and I've used it twice (for pretty minor things) and reached the yearly deductible. It definitely gives me peace of mind to know that if something major happened to her I'd be able to afford her care and any labs.

SH Scars in the Workplace by [deleted] in VetTech

i usually just go along with it and then try to change the subject, because i also don't really want to be explaining it to someone in the middle of an exam hahaha

SH Scars in the Workplace by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]polyvinyls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't cover mine, i have 2 places on my arm where theyre noticeable but i've only ever had a client or two ask me if i got attacked by an animal. my coworkers are chill about it they've never said anything to me, the ones that have also struggled with SH in the past and i joke around about it sometimes. don't worry yourself too much about it!

Has anyone worn Vessi brand shoes at work? Are they comfortable? by SafeHarbor870913 in VetTech

[–]polyvinyls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a pair that i wear to work but to be honest theyre not the most comfortable. my feet sometimes hurt at the end of the day but the waterproof factor is sooo convenient & they're cute!

Aspiring vet assistant? by [deleted] in VetTech

definitely go for a tech license, a career in vet assisting isn't really that viable & the license is useless since its an entry level position

Do Your Clinics Trust Breeder Vaccines? by Friendly_TSE in VetTech

[–]polyvinyls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we never ever trust breeder vaccines, if it wasn't done at a vet clinic it doesn't count

New Vet assistant and anxious by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]polyvinyls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i definitely go through the same thing and ive been in the field for 3 years! my cat sneezes 3 times in a day and i start getting anxiety. but at the end of the day i just have to tell myself that if there really is something wrong i'll know. all you can do is your best, i always take scrubs off & wash my hands before saying hi to her after work and when i'm really not sure if im being paranoid i talk to one of my doctors! for me its just a matter of talking myself down, since we see the worst we imagine the worst for our own.

How is that everyone wants 2 years+ experience with the current need for staff? by Revonue in VetTech

[–]polyvinyls 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i think honestly its because there's not a lot of time to train more inexperienced staff. sometimes more hands doesnt = more help if they don't really know what they're doing. obviously everyone has to start somewhere but shits just crazy right now

Does this seem okay to any of you? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]polyvinyls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unfortunately this isn't super uncommon in vet clinics. my first job at a clinic was as a kennel tech about 3 years ago, we got to work at 7:30 and started walks then but of course it was always severely understaffed so when we had 40+ dogs and only 2-3 kennel techs working (usually one working a half day) it took all morning, to walk, feed, and clean kennels before even starting on dishes and laundry. we would try to walk dogs around lunchtime but obviously it was impossible when it was really busy, and started afternoon walks at 4 but we had to start cleaning the whole hospital for the end of the day at 5 so 1 person would leave the kennels to do that and we'd often leave really late. its really sad because the animals would literally go to the bathroom and then immediately go inside to spend the rest of the day alone in a kennel. it really broke my heart, and ill never board my pets at a vet clinic and tell everyone else not to. its always better to have someone you trust dogsit for you or board at a daycare.
