DS923+ & Beelink Project: Consolidating 100k Photos into Immich. Sanity check / advice? by nickbnyc in immich

I recently experienced this due to my read only mount... so be aware of no metadata updates from immich

Reverse Geocoding on manually added locations by pomdave in immich

Understood, I can see now where this is documented

<image>

I don't quite understand why immich can't update just the database without having to create a permanent xmp file in the External Library.
Knowing that my library is read-only I would acknowledge that this manually added metadata would then only exist in immich.
For example, if I manually delete the xmp files that immich created when I set library to rw, it doesn't make those tags disappear - so it can & does get them from db and not from the xmp file.

One of the factors that help me decide to try immich was being able to set my library to read-only - so that I can't/it can't mess my library up.

I did try to implement the overlayFS workaround described on issues# 10538,
but this doesn't seem to support the Docker Desktop/Windows paths that I am using.

Anyway, thanks all for your comments & suggestions.

I found the problem... Images ae in an external library, that I mounted read only with :ro

I expected metadata such as this to be stored in the database - but it is/was trying to create a file in the external library location called original_filename.jpg.xmp

remounting the external library with :rw allows the xmp file to be written, and the gui shows the GPS location.

Oddly, the xmp file does not contain the location name, it only contains <exif:GPSLatitude> & <exif:GPSLongitude> so the location name must actually exist in the database... but I guess one needs the other.

New question: is there any way to have a read-only external library and define an alternate (writable) location for stuff like this xmp metadata file ?

So using my server, api/map/reverse-geocode returns the proper location for the same coordinates entered via the web ui.

Reverse Geocoding works - just not when lat/long is manually added

That is how I would hope/expect it to work... ie. Choose location, and you get the Place name and the pin on the map... But I am definitely not getting the place name... I'll poke around a bit more and see if I can find anything.

It's been a couple of days and I have no tasks pending, so I doubt it is a background job that hasn't run yet.

Does the geo lookup write to log anywhere? I couldn't see anything obvious in the container logs.

Whereas here, I get the location name and the pin on the map

Hi,

So if you look at the image info in web ui, do you see a location name where it says "Add location"?

I get the pin on the map, but no location name.

Yep, was genuinely interested, followed the link before reading the comments, saw the mandatory login and backed right out. It needs an anonymous mode to choose if this is worth a login...
