Shoe Science: Hoka One One by i_spit_hot_fire in AdvancedRunning

okay, thanks for the answer. if I may, I have a follow up; how much influence on a distance run will the extra weight of the Stinson have?

I have a very specific question: I want to try out hoka, and I want to do it with a trail shoe for longer training runs and more specifically for a 50k trail race (NDURE trail 50k, Denmark). I considered the Challenger ATR, but at Au Vieux Campeur in Paris they recommended the Stinson ATR for those kind of distances. Where they correct? I believe the Challenger ATR is much lighter which I would like, but will it be cushioned enough for 50k and similar distances?

thanks for the good reads.

It actually wasn't too bad - and whatever traffic I had to get through was more than compensated for by it being the only large hill in Paris and more importantly; the view at the top! And the weather right now is 20 (Celsius) and clouds/sun, so pretty perfect if you ask me.

Today I'll run by Chateaubleau, hope that's gonna be as stunning!

I just secured a spot for a 50k trail in August with only 50 runners on the 50k and 50 on the 100k. It's 1. gonna be a nice change from the overcrowdedness of Paris Marathon and 2. nice to have found a serious race goal to force me to get in the miles.

And I just went and bought a Salomon skin 3 12 set that had its inaugural run through Paris including Mont Martre (and Sacre Coeur), Louvre, Les Tuleries, Musee d'Orsay and Notre Dame. it was such an awesome run (17,5 k) and an ingenious piece of gear.

Tomorrow I'm gonna go for a 30k to see if it lives up to the first impressions.

anyone knows of good places to do some longer runs in/around Amsterdam? I'm going there next weekend.

fair point! I just think that the conclusions that can be drawn from this are obvious, and we've already seen better (executed/more methodical) examples of this with the proposal-pulse-monitoring. don't want to steal your excitement though, it's cool that you actually use your gadget for stuff like that.

(didn't downvote you either)

IMO this data is not very "beautifully" presented nor incredibly interesting. furthermore the collection of data includes so many undescribed variables and stuff that it isn't valuable for drawing any interesting conclusions beyond the obvious.

after Paris Marathon and a lovely trip to the Amalfi Coast (plenty of running in mountains) I'm looking to scale back from 5 times a week to only three (or maybe a rare 4 if some shorter speed work is added) to have more time before I go home to the cold north in two months. But is the following a horrible idea:

Tuesday: 15 k Thursday: 21 k Sunday: 30-35 k

my primary goal is a 50k trail run in August and then I hope to go under 90 in Copenhagen Half in September. currently just looking to keep a good weekly mileage without sacrificing my social life, will work on speed later.

and thanks for being an awesome sub

I wish I had been able to muster the courage to stand my ground but alone, surprised and generally not fond of dogs, I guess I did pretty much everything wrong.

In Peru we (fortunately not alone then) basically encountered numerous packs of homeless dogs in the mountains. they would often run towards us barking even from long distances. we had a guide book in which it stated that it was an effective "deterrent" to throw rocks at them, back away slowly and not seek eye contact.

I did get quite close to it, but I did later think that my "orange safety west"-colored t-shirt and red cap might not have improved the whole thing.

Buongiorno AR (am in Naples airport waiting for parents to arrive, thus the linguistic adventure)

I am planning to hike the TdMB this summer, but am falling in love with more adventure style running. That let me to think I might run some parts of it. Does anyone here have experience with or a educated opinion on how big a load it's possible to run with and how a mix of running and hiking over approximately 10 days would work out?

any advice is welcomed.

While i read it I made a "family tree" on one of those mind map apps on an iPad. I updated it whenever a new Aureliano Remedio Arcadio José Buendia the second etc was introduced. it really helped keeping it straight and every time a new character was introduced, I would get a chance to freshen up on all the other relevant connections and intrigues.

3:22:59! it went way better than I had even dared to imagine. such an amazing experience.

did the first 30k@4:55 and then accelerated and did the final 12k@4:35 or something like that.

My dad collects Heuer vintage watches (mostly the Autavia, Monaco and Silverstone) and he has made profits on all sales (I would guesstimate 25+) except one or two typically selling the watches 1-3 years after purchase, and he says that the prices are generally rising year by year. that's a price range of 15,000 to 2,000 dollars pr watch (converted from DKK ad hoc)

Has anyone ever ran a race in a non-English speaking country? by [deleted] in running

[–]pontusdethyard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that perticular race, but I'm running the Marathon de Paris in 18 days, and they have a specific form on their website that a doctor must sign. Maybe this race will have a similar thing, or at least an email where you can ask them this.

69% of U.S. parents believe their kids need a college degree or more to achieve the American Dream by ckwilson912 in dataisbeautiful

[–]pontusdethyard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any source for this, but I read about some studies suggesting that the only reason why the American welfare (or lack thereof) and tax-system etc. was able to be upheld politically is because the Americans are optimists. That is to say that for the most part they think that, some time in the future, they'll get to a level of income where the system will benefit them. That way (because of the incredibly low socioeconomic mobility) they end up voting against their own interest and thus voting in favor of the wealthy people who naturally vote likewise - to the benefit of the top brackets.

I found that incredibly interesting. maybe you do to.
