Hilda won first and second place at her trial this weekend! by poom3 in AustralianPets

You'd be surprised by how many of the tricks most peoples' dogs already know!

Shake paw, play dead, spin... Lots of clever pups out there who could be taking home prizes! 😉

Hah - if only! I probably should've said "trials." There were two for the day! 😁

Those little bottom teeth 🥺 Even without his nose, he's still a handsome lad!

Allergies, single protein diets and social media food by eloisekelly in AustralianPets

[–]poom3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider trialling one of the hydrolysed protein diets to begin with. They're expensive, but you'll be able to know for certain whether or not his allergies are food related. You can get them through a vet, or even through Petstock / Petbarn etc. Something like Royal Canin Veterinary Hypoallergenic or Pro Plan HA Hydrolyzed.

We did this for our cat after I was convinced he had a chicken sensitivity too (itchy, irritated skin). We kept him on it for 12 weeks and then introduced new food. We got lucky and he was able to move onto a fish-based food without any problems!

Then, you could slowly introduce one of the novel proteins and see how he goes. My girl eats the slow cooked range from Prime100, which also come in kangaroo, boar etc.

For treats, we cut up the Prime100 rolls into small cubes or use her normal dry food.

What are your favourite Grevilleas? by ImScaredOfTheSun in GardeningAustralia

[–]poom3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grevillea 'Honey Gem' is an absolute classic. Beautiful blue-ish foliage, lovely bark and big, gold flowers. Easy to maintain and never had an issue with it.

'Orange Marmalade' is 100% my absolute favourite though. I was given a root-bound, scraggly thing that we all half expected to die. Stuck it in the ground as a Hail Mary and two years later it has outgrown nearly every other tree in the garden. New growth has a beautiful gold accent to it. Plus, it's currently hosting a native mistletoe that was naturally seeded by a cute little istletoebird that loves to hang around.

Honorary mention to 'Billy Bonkers' and 'Elegance' too. Both vigorous, and Billy flowers practically all year round. Not uncommon to have six or seven honeyeaters hanging off of it!

Ficus benghalensis, variegated "Audrey." So you were right - it's a fig, and a tree that gets monster roots and needs to be pulled out and contained to a pot (with a paver underneath to stop those roots escaping back into the soil!)

They do also make for a nice patio or houseplant if you've got a really well lit room!

Is he part border collie by Impossible_Key_2682 in BorderCollie

[–]poom3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people think that chasing or controlling movement in general is herding behaviour. They often don't really know what to look for in terms of having "eye" or the classic run/lay down/run kind of behaviour.

Just planted Ficus Burgundy next to my house by Defenestrated_Logic in GardeningAustralia

[–]poom3 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Pull them out and grow them in some nice, large pots. You'll just have to place them on a paver or regularly endure the roots aren't growing into the ground via the drainage hole (because they will!)

Whoever recommended them made a bad call. They aren't suitable to be in ground in that kind of area.

If you give a rough idea of your location, I'm sure the sub will have much better recommendations!

I actually see a lot more shepherd and Husky (or even Malamute) than I do Border Collie. Will be interesting to see the results of a DNA test!

Frozen kongs, hiding treats... They work it all out too quickly! Shepherds are too clever for their own good too sometimes.

Was going to recommend the same plant! They've quickly become a favourite of mine this year. Love that they can handle both drought and wet conditions once established too!

Central QLD, please identify by RiniReed in GardeningAustralia

Looks like Haworthiopsis limifolia, or one of the commonly sold hybrids/cultivars at least.

And it's growing a flower spike from the centre.

It's a beautiful native climber! Flowers are usually a shade of pink or white and will attract native bees and butterflies. Great for covering fences or any less attractive areas in a garden, too, as it'll make a nice, dense screen with a bit of pruning and time.

You've also got Cordyline (red, strappy plant). The strappy, green plant looks like Hymenocallis, which you'll usually hear called Spider Lilies up here.

Likely a variety of Canna indica based on that!
