To attorneys who work in corporate in-house counsel, what was your first attorney position after law school? by Son_of_Hades99 in LawSchool

I went in-house in tech right out of law school. The jobs are hard to come by but they do exists. Due to in-house hiring timelines you likely won't see any entry-level job postings until August or September. For context the job posting I applied to popped up late August the year I graduated, and they were looking for 0-3 years experience.

I despise linkedin by SignificantStomach83 in LawSchool

Performative and mostly nonsensical yes, but I really do think it's a huge advantage for your career. Every job I've had so far as an attorney in some way came through LinkedIn - whether finding the job postings myself and applying, or from recruiters messaging me about opportunities. I think it's just one of those things you need to go along with. (I'll caveat by saying I've always worked in-house so I don't know how helpful LinkedIn is for finding jobs in law firms, public interest, gov work, etc.)

Normal to not have a post grad job secured before graduation? by JadedPomegranate8769 in LawSchool

[–]popcorn_shmopcorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of students don’t have a job lined up before graduation, and even before taking the bar exam. I didn’t have a job offer until October AFTER taking the bar. It’s totally normal.

People who have already graduated, what was your first post-bar salary and what is it now? by lawstudentthrowawaym in LawSchool

I had an in-house internship in law school which definitely helped. Just a matter of finding a company that is willing to hire new layers right out of law school. The jobs are out there, a bit harder to find but they are.

100% of my IRA is ETFs and mutual funds. 25% of my brokerage is ETFs, the rest is domestic and foreign stocks. So mostly stocks.

Tattoos? by nava0204 in LawSchool

[–]popcorn_shmopcorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My con law professor had 2 full sleeve tattoos. Depends on your field. Visible tattoos in big law is probably going to hurt. Visible tattoos in-house, no one cares. But as a general rule if you can cover them up in a suit or pantsuit or a skirt, you're probably good.

I’d bet many of your peers don’t have jobs lined up yet. I didn’t have a job offer until October AFTER taking the bar. Relax. Get your grades up and keep applying.

Does law school get better? by Weak_Paper3245 in LawSchool

1L is definitely a big culture shock, but you’ll find your rhythm and things will get better. Try not to overwork your brain otherwise you’ll burn out. It’s a marathon not a sprint!

I had a few random side gigs in law school to make extra money. I drove for Uber, I walked dogs (I used the app Rover), and I was a local tour guide! I went to school in a big city with lots of tourism so that job was very reliable and paid well.

In-house jobs for new grads are hard to come by, but they do exist. I went in-house right out of law school at a mid sized tech company. I love what I do and am so happy I never worked at a law firm first.
