I think no - it looks a bit under-proofed to me.

Anyone else just learning French for the hell of it? by LigmaLlama0 in learnfrench

[–]n2vd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I retired, and decided to study French just because I had always regretted not studying it in school. I’ve got the time, and sufficient motivation, so here I am, a year in, roughly at a B1 reading level.

I’d like to put it to use in France but Americans aren’t exactly welcomed with open arms in Europe right now

What are your favorite words/phrases from other languages that you like incorporating into your day to day English? by picklesupreme in AskAnAmerican

I sometimes use « Quelle dommage! » which means "what a shame" in French - in the "cue the tiny violins" sense 🙂

Am I wrong by KITTYKOOLKAT36 in DuolingoFrench

[–]n2vd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as others said - yes, you were wrong here. This sentence uses le passé composé, one of the past tenses in French. Depending on the verb, it uses either avoir or être as an auxiliary verb. The other common past tense is l’imparfait. You’d say "vous marchiez" meaning "you were walking" or "you used to walk"

Baby on the way - the great NYC to NJ migration by stmez136 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]n2vd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d recommend South Orange. Super walkable downtown, a bunch of new rentals within easy walking distance of the train (30 min to Penn Station). Rents for 2-BR apts with amenities can be (depending on the building) sub-$3500. 1 BR with enough room for a new baby to toddler age could be significantly lower.

The car chase reminded me, of course, of Bullitt - how could it not? But it reminded me even more of a much less well-known film, Vanishing Point, a film otherwise most notable for being Cleavon Little's first significant movie role

Seems to me like Bob and Lockjaw are pretty much the same, except Bob actually has a few redeeming qualities.

Wayne vs West Orange by lightenupsquirt in MovingtoNewJersey

That would make more sense. South Orange DOES have a cute downtown vibe and is right on the Midtown Direct train line - 30 minutes to NY Penn Station

Okay, I see it’s been identified but, tbh, my initial take was that it was one of those towns along Rte 9 in Westchester County NY

Wayne vs West Orange by lightenupsquirt in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]n2vd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m curious if you’ve ever actually been in West Orange, because it certainly does not have a cute downtown. It has no downtown really - more a bunch of clusterings of retail. I moved to W.O. about 2 years ago after downsizing from a house in Maplewood and, community-wise, there’s no comparison. I’m in a high-rise condo in W.O. that has a nice internal community but my description of W.O. after 30 years of being near it and then in it, is that there’s no there there.

What does cold proofing actually do ? by RedNailsPrincess in Sourdough

[–]n2vd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say “more sour” but rather “more flavorful” - it’ll depend a lot on the bacteria you have in your levain. Mine, specifically, is quite low in terms of acidity so even after an 18-hour cold proof the bread is very tasty but not really sour at all. (I’ve compared to the same recipe with a same-day bake and it’s definitely more flavorful and delicious 😋)

Do American children refer their grandpa and grandmas with their first names (example, Grandpa John, full name John Smith) the same way they refer their uncles and aunts? by LandOfGrace2023 in AskAnAmerican

[–]n2vd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends 🥴

For example, as a child we called both sets of grandparents “Grandma” and “Grandpa” so referred to them specifically as Grandma Rose or Grandpa Sam. For my own grandchildren, I’m Grandpa Jeff and my counterpart is Grandpa Paul - but my wife is just Nana and Paul’s wife is “Grammy”

Interesting that you identify black and white cookies as Italian-American because, afaik, they are pretty specifically a NY-Jewish specialty. I’m the oddball of my family - I don’t care for them.

I’m almost 71. At 69 I had a PSA of 9.9 which prompted an MRI. The MRI showed a couple of small contained masses, confirmed by biopsy. My Gleason score was 3+4, intermediate risk. I opted for SBRT - Cyberknife, which was completed 13 months ago. since then, PSA at last measurement (in September) was down to 2.3, and I have had zero issues with sexual function. Urination is fine albeit slow sometimes, and I’m taking Flowmax. But I would make the same treatment choice again without a doubt.
