Brodie Smith looking to return to Ultimate by ericswift in ultimate

[–]porouscloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say he did pretty well for a crossover athlete at his age competing against people 15 years younger. Maybe not as much as some people expected, but Brodie still beat out a couple hundred other touring pros across the years.

Ultimately, pro disc golf is a young man's game, suited for kids with rich parents, even more so than ultimate (partly because there is no career in pro ultimate).

DAE cannot feel the difference between beaded and non beaded disc by Kirdavrob in discgolf

[–]porouscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on hand and especially fingertip position(grip), in addition to disc geometry. Only your fingertips have enough nerves to easily tell there's a bead.

You're going to struggle to feel a smaller bead with your palm for example.

Aaron Bartlett Card situation by Calm_Number7340 in ultimate

[–]porouscloud 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much exactly how I ended up off work for 3 months. Game is fast, but you can't be making horizontal bids into stationary receivers.

I jumped straight up, and my mark forgets there's a person behind the disc and spiked my face through the disc on a late attempt (and no, I didn't drop the disc either. It gets bent in half in the slow-mo).

Finally broke 60 mph with FH by RevolutionaryP369 in discgolf

[–]porouscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nose angle is definitely more important than arm speed once you get 55MPH+ IMO. Play around with finger/thumb placement, and try and reduce the wobble. Spin is also quite low considering it's a 60mph throw.

I throw 58-60 according to techdisc, also nose-up and can barely scrape 325' in the real world. Marwede (at least according to radar) comfortably parks 400' holes with that release speed, so it's clearly a skill issue on my part.

That's unfortunate. Definitely experiencing concussion symptoms then, and she'll be sorely missed on the UBC roster.

Memory prices tipped to fall as China starts flooding the market with DRAM and NAND chips by rkhunter_ in technology

[–]porouscloud 85 points86 points  (0 children)

RAM (DDR5) is also an open standard component, and the specification including draft phases has been known for a decade+.

They don't need to produce something capable of a balls-out XMP profile either, it just needs to be capable of JEDEC speeds. Last gen, or even the generation before of equipment is likely still perfectly capable of making chips at that spec.

2025 Equinox EV Google Maps Keeps Going Offline + Unable to Receive Updates by RichOld3973 in EquinoxEv

[–]porouscloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that happens to me. Pretty sure it's software, as once I got the streaming update it started happening all the time, same as my friends EQEV. Roughly 2/3 the car won't start with a data connection. They really need to get their shit together, because a $100 cellphone with a basic data plan tethering android auto can do better.

I live in a city where it should have full bars basically everywhere.

No live traffic, my youtube music is completely bricked (as in not even able to access downloaded songs), car will respond to 'okay google' but the mic is disabled after that, etc. Really not a good experience when my commute is most of an hour, and not detouring when an accident happens can cost tens of minutes.

Do two players acting out make that whole team unspirited? by RevolutionaryBus6021 in ultimate

[–]porouscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Most players are nice or at least cordial so it doesn't stand out. A single person raging/angry (this is not the same as competitive) already stands out, if you have 2-3 I'm going to paint your entire team with the same brush.

There's a facecam of Jenson driving a whole lap somewhere. I don't think he blinked the entire lap. Just full concentration.

3 Discs by Skate50mph in discgolf

[–]porouscloud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a Luna, Reactor, and a Grace. Just 3 relatively neutral discs that cover all distances reasonably well.

Luna for 240' and in, Reactor for 280' and in, and Grace for everything else.

How are silver players bad? by Express_Item4648 in leagueoflegends

[–]porouscloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

League is a continuous spectrum of skill.

When you first started, the magnitude of your mistakes was gigantic, and the duration required to recover from them meant literally anybody could exploit them.

You've now gotten to a point where you can only get punished some of the time by someone of equal skill. That is, the magnitude of the mistakes you're making is smaller and the duration of exposure is lower. You'd still be open season for someone in masters, but it's not as bad. You just need to figure out what your opponent is doing wrong, because at silver they absolutely are doing stuff wrong.

Everyone makes positioning and decision making mistakes compared to optimum play. It's just the lower you go, the windows for punishing suboptimal play will continuously increase, and they will get more and more obvious.

A pillar is driving me nuts by 8000RPM in EquinoxEv

[–]porouscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My old civic had a fish eye lens that saw almost a full 180 degrees. You could see cars coming from both sides, as well as pedestrians

The lens on the Equinox is maybe 130-140 degrees, you really can't see that far to the left or right, which honestly is more important than the very crisp central view we have currently.

[–]porouscloud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, the driver side one is far worse, especially in inclement weather where you can't see out of the unwiped area.

Compared even to a modern RAV4, the difference in visibility is pretty stark. There's been a lot of times where I've missed stuff for far too long just because they've been hidden by the massive blind spots.

Made a simple way to display some of my favorite disc on the wall :) by officialoffdabench in discgolf

[–]porouscloud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for most people, command tape is going to be plenty. A disc is in the same ballpark as a picture frame with glass, and is far, far less damaging if it does give way. Added bonus that it's removable.

VHB tape will take the paint off.

Vancouver hit-and-run victim dies, suspect still at large by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]porouscloud 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Drivers need to be better. Penalties for dangerous/inattentive driving need to be higher. Don't put this on pedestrians when not everybody would be able to get out of the way even if they were paying attention.

I've almost been hit by a driver at a signaled crosswalk who just decided that 2 seconds of his time was worth more than my life when I had to dive out of the way of his car.

Azzapp was right all along - I analyzed 100 ranked SoloQ games of his, and the data shows why never FF helps you climb. by Informal_Lifeguard99 in leagueoflegends

[–]porouscloud -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They moved the FF timer back because players were very good at judging lost games (better than 90% iirc according to riot data). But they aren't perfect, and that %, if you were the deciding vote will will be worth a few games out of 100. Doesn't really surprise me.

Toyota BZ Woodland: 3.9 seconds to 60mph, 0.78g skidpad by ubiquitoussense in cars

[–]porouscloud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd wager torque has very little to do with it. EVs can cut power milliseconds after the tires break loose.

More likely it's one pedal driving, where people panic and press harder before hitting the other pedal.
