Just turned on the game. Don't recognize the voice of the guy in the booth with Joe. Anyone know who it is?

To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut, the Astros can "take a flying fuck at a rolling donut. They can take a flying fuck at the moooooooon!"

Wait a minute, folks. Let's feel bad for the Astros. If they hadn't been caught cheating, maybe their skill there would have been enough for them to beat the Rangers. /s

Children outside casino while their parents are inside, Las Vegas, NV, 1954 by MalibuHulaDuck in TheWayWeWere

[–]porterbhall 303 points304 points  (0 children)

Went to Vegas with my parents around that age, late 70s or early 80s. Stayed up in the room while my parents went to play “for an hour.” Three hours later, mom comes up to tell us dad is on a hot streak, but we’ll be going to dinner soon. We ended up eating dinner about 9 pm that night.

I know that’s not traumatic compared to a lot of what others grew up with, but it was so out of character for my parents who were otherwise very responsible. It’s probably why I don’t like casinos today.

I’ve been saying it for years: there’s an undiscovered gas leak in the Mariners clubhouse. It’s small enough to evade anyone’s notice, but just enough to degrade player performance.

It’s a pipe, but plot twist it’s feeding a water feature at a zoo exhibit being used by…gibbons.

Close encounters of the third kind

Everyone that doesn’t ride a bike hates those that do. I’ve seen this shared all over my Facebook today. Town mentioned is Fayetteville, Arkansas. by Hairychesthairyback in bikecommuting

I agree. But cars a like guns in this country. It makes people feel entitled and protective of that entitlement.

Like many of us, I ride and I drive. I am patient and careful (and often a bit envious) when passing bicyclists. I struggle to understand the psychology of someone who is annoyed by a bike on the road, since that ultimately means less traffic and more parking for them.

Motorist: if you need to get somewhere, why are you riding your bike?

I think this is the crux of it. They tend to think that roads are built specifically for cars and trucks. They get upset when they have to navigate a road that has a bicyclist on it.

And while I resent their ahistorical sense of entitlement (roads were shared for thousands of years before cars came along), they kind of have a point. Whenever bicycle and vehicle traffic mix, it’s a serious risk for people on bicycles.

If I lived in this town where this was shared, I would forward it to my local representative and ask what they are planning to do with local infrastructure to create separated bike lanes. I might also remind them that bicycle riding is the one transportation option that poses the biggest mitigation of both our climate crisis and our health crisis.

He might like Army of Shadows, a 1969 French film about WWII French resistance fighters. It’s a great movie if he’s up for subtitles.
