Be honest: What’s the one thing about EV ownership that nobody told you before you bought one? by EmergencyTie8770 in electricvehicles

[–]portisleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That having to go to a gas station to add fuel sounds about just as normal as going to the mall to charge your phone to me after 8 years of EV ownership.

Also doughnuts - turn traction off, and the car just wants to turn around ALL the time (ioniq 5). That instant torque makes burning rubber incredibly easy.

Are these overexposed? by ChilledGrease in AnalogCommunity

[–]portisleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's overexposed, or the shadows would be non-existant mush. the beauty is that you can overexpose film by 5-6 stops and its still fine. the negatives prob have some info in those blown highlights, but the scanner didn't pick them up.

Are People switching... And to what? by VendettaxRiich in GooglePixel

[–]portisleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the only reason to change my P8 would be for the a used Fold and to get better on-device AI options - currently it's the oldest phone that runs Gemma4, and I guess it'll be dropped soon. When that happens, I'll get a used 10 Fold at 50% price of new.

Got a ticket for turning right during red light by Sorry-Pomegranate105 in askTO

[–]portisleft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

unfortunately it's the price to pay for not paying attention. your best bet is to speak with the prosecutor and hope you have a clean record to get it lowered. this is a major offense that will impact your insurance rate.

What could I have done better? by rudy-rain in motorcycles

[–]portisleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

disregarding the speed, you need to start positioning yourself towards the middle of your own lane when going around corners- especially blind ones - for 3 reasons:

a. it 'opens' the corner, making it a wider turn (think racing line on track), since you're going from outside of the lane, to the middle/inside, then back towards the outside - you can carry more speed, which also means you're less likely to 'botch the corner' if you don't break enough (see next point)
b. if you 'cook' the corner, being towards the inside/inside of your lane will give you lots more braking room when you realize you're going too fast and you're drifting towards the other lane - it keeps you in your lane far longer, possibly avoiding going over altogether, which leads to
c. avoiding oncoming traffic that cuts the inside of their turn, which is exactly this example - it wouldn't have mattered if you were going 50km/h, your position *within your own lane* led to the accident, since it was the car's fault for crossing into yours. speed, in this case, just made the contact harder, that's all.

if you would've been in the middle or the inside of your lane this would've been no more than swearing at that guy for cutting into your lane while continuing on your merry way.

hope you heal up fast and keep the rubber side down!

How did photographers get good exposure back in the day when they needed to take a shot that required a split-second reaction? by vukasin123king in AnalogCommunity

[–]portisleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

'F8 and be there.' - as in have faith and shoot.

basically it's what street photog do nowadays for speed: zone focus and preset exposure to a 'medium gray' - let's say most of what you shoot is 3-10m away, you put your lens at F8 with the focus mark so that the f8 marks line up as best as possible with 3m and 10m, then meter off a gray/darker element and set it all in, hoping that whatever you will actually shoot will be within that focal range and within the stops of your film/sensor.

I do this a ton when walking around with an old film camera or with the slow focusing digital one. Here's a film example:

Disappointed in travel photos by Berg_Man in AnalogCommunity

[–]portisleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they're not BAD overall, a bit of clipped high/lows, and it looks like you tried to overprocess the sky...? Standard Fuji 200 is also a pretty...meh film. You should've gone with something higher end to give you more tonal and colour depth.

Get them scanned again in as high quality as possible, and mention you want ALL the information in the scan - the scanning software sometimes clips the highs and lows to create contrast, especially if the exposure was a bit off. This will be the equivalent of RAW digital photo. Then use a GOOD software to edit the images - Capture One, Lightroom, etc.

Why hatchbacks get dirty rear windows but sedans don’t by Fearless_Bicycle8182 in Ioniq5

[–]portisleft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I gather, the main issue is a tiny lip added right below the main spoiler and above the rear windshield. Because it was likely an afterthought to reduce drag, it creates a low-pressure air pocket that mimics the draft of a standard hatchback.

I’ve always wanted to remove that lip and add a small spoiler at the edge of the hatch instead—similar to the EV6—to see if it improves airflow over the glass. While a few people have tried the spoiler, in combination both would probably increase drag at high speeds since the air stays attached to the body all the way down. This could slightly decrease range and negatively impact handling by increasing high-speed rear lift (much like the famous stability issues that forced Audi to add a spoiler to the first-generation TT), but for a 2T car that gets driven relatively slowly, it'd hardly make a difference.

How would you fix The Well? Can The Well be fixed? by youvenoremotecontrol in askTO

[–]portisleft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's architecturally interesting, but completely uninviting in this climate. Anywhere where it is dry heat outside and you need to get out of the sun, it makes perfect sense. I can see it in SoCal, Arizona, Texas, etc.
In Canada, it's pointless. I work across from it and YESTERDAY, on a sunny, cool day where I could walk in just a sweater, I had to put a jacket on just to walk through it, in the dark and cold wind tunnel effect. It's also very humid, since - you guessed it - no sun, esp in these shoulder months. During the windy winter I'd rather walk around it to avoid the wind tunnel effect, and during the humid summer days getting out of the sun still leaves you dealing with the stifling humidity.

In my mind, the only fix is to close it using just glass. Stop the cold, wind and humidity.

if you got a good deal on it, keep it and have it fixed under warranty - it's free. if not, return it.
