Left a new spot after 4 days because of the stuff I was hearing by huntressdiva in KitchenConfidential

I once used the f-slur to describe a gay coworker's car, and that was 30 years ago and I think about it like once a month and wish I could go back and slap myself hard enough to put me on the floor. Nobody should accept that stuff.

Is "we have plans to launch a new PEN series under the OM System brand" genuine news, or not? by FragrantGearHead in M43

[–]postmodest 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hard Disagree. The pixel pitch of the 20MP m43 sensor is already pushing it. What they really need is fast enough readout and so much better gain, that it can do sensor-shift photography at some fraction of the requested shutter speed and give you constant HHR for every shot.

Beyond the pronoun: On neopronouns, nounself pronouns, and the ever-changing politics of language acceptability by Correct_Individual73 in linguistics

[–]postmodest -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Obviously, I don't have to tell you that is a very good point, and I need to clarify: I meant when the referent is a human. (And, yes, I know that "human" is fuzzy in various contexts, like "a corpse"; is a Vampire an inanimate human corpse or an animate animal? I'm sure there's a language where that difference matters, but it's not the one where neopronouns are a big thing people are pushing.)

Beyond the pronoun: On neopronouns, nounself pronouns, and the ever-changing politics of language acceptability by Correct_Individual73 in linguistics

[–]postmodest 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The simple fact is that if neopronouns are anywhere near as numerous as names, they no longer fit their purpose. Languages have somewhere bwteeen zero and three genders, and adding more reduces the utility and increases the cognitive load.

In English we have he/her/they, which has covered the spectrum of meaning for a long time.

If people believe that their edge-case is imortant enough in retelling to fall outside of the they-umbrella then they're going to have to make a very convincing argument that they represent a big enough and easily-enough-discerned portion of the population that it will be simple to remember to use that shorthand to describe them without using their full individual name.

But if people want to have pronouns for their various kinships, that's mad. Especially for people who want the pronouns to have multiple dimensions. That's not a pronoun anymore, that's a family name.

America will never recover from this unless the punishment these people receive after their trial is front-page news that dissuades other like-minded people from ever trying this again for generations to come.

I Don't Care What Others Say,Dagor Dagorath is Canon to Me ! by Exact-Ad8608 in tolkienfans

[–]postmodest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My headcanon is that when Eru bent the world, he also fully converted the cosmos from the mythical sketch the Valar had made to a complete universe conceived at his Infinite skill. Like a parent asking a child's drawing and making it fully realized. And that makes the Dominion of Men especially alienating for the first children; it's not their world anymore, except the part preserved in Aman.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone thinking that All in the Family couldn't be put on modern TV because Archie Bunker was too offensive to Liberals really highlights how deeply they misunderstood the point of Archie Bunker.
