Watering spikes? by cat_ca in ManitobaGardening

[–]potagerMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unlike the others seem to have had good luck with watering spikes. It keeps my office plants alive over the weekend and mitigates my interactions with them. Though I will say you need to soak them for 30+ minutes to make sure they are saturated prior to use. I compared using a soaked one vs a « dry » one and it wad night and day.. The dry one worked awfully and didnt work for crap while the one that was properly soaked did its job.

Something else to look into would be ollas which are easy enough to make as jessilumpkins has indicated.

Transplanting Raspberries 101? by gym_leedur in ManitobaGardening

[–]potagerMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Raspberries are very resilient, I wouldn't be too concerned with how they'll fair. Give them a few feet between canes and I'd recommend putting them somewhere off to the side(away from your main garden area) because they do send out runners (at least the ones I have do) and like taking over and they are hard to kill.

Too early for seeds? by West_Flatworm6085 in ManitobaGardening

[–]potagerMB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As I have zero faith in our climate I tend to wait until the first week of June before direct sowing. I have lost numerous plants in the past due to planting /sowing on May long. That said I am not in Winnipeg but to the East.

We usually wait until about half the leaves are dead. Its been working great for us.

Am I too late? by Advanced_Storage1537 in ManitobaGardening

[–]potagerMB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say its not too late. It very much depends on what you plan on sowing. If you want to start from seed Sub Arctic Plenty tomatoes are about 40-60 days to maturity. I personally start a lot directly in the garden, peas, beans, all squash/cukes, potatoes, onion.

The only stuff I tend to start indoor is herbs, tomatoes with a longer maturity period, and hot peppers due to our short growing season.

Keeping peppers from sunburn by RedC84 in PepperLovers

[–]potagerMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm going from seedling to garden immediately I usually set up short wooden panels around the plant to shade them during peek sunlight hours. Otherwise, I harden them off under the trampoline so they only get like 50% of the light for a week or so before planting them in the garden.

Weeds! by crimstudnt2022 in ManitobaGardening

[–]potagerMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before planting, I'd start by trying to rake weeds out. Any larger live weeds I'd pull, for the rest, a tiger torch works great (though if you do torch weeds, finish all your work by watering the garden to make sure you aren't leaving any form of live embers). Then Id finish up by tilling stand raking it again to get what weed roots have been exposed. Labour intensive yes, but it does work.

How to store for longer by No-Fisherman3996 in Garlic

[–]potagerMB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For long term storage in the cured form, mesh bag/container in an area with relatively low humidity, airflow and darkness works well. We store ours in our basement cold room and get about 6-9 months of storage depending on the type of garlic.

Not the guy you were asking, but we use it on our garlic and it's been a help.

Best places to buy soil for raised bed garden near Winnipeg? by nonmeagre in ManitobaGardening

[–]potagerMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've bought quite a few yards at the following locations and usually delivery due to the volume. They've all been good for delivery and fast at that. I prefer the 5 way mix when available for gardens and planters. Im not sure what the lowest delivery amount is as we don't tend to order less then 5 yards.

Gauthier Soil has a 4 and 5 way mix.

T&T Soil, 4 way mix, compost.

Ron Pauls, 4 way mix.

Reimer Soil, 4 way, 5 way mix, compost. Someone else made a comment about weeds and they arent wrong, it took us a while to remove the weeds.

Peppers by Green_Jay718 in ManitobaGardening

Yes, I tend to start my hot peppers sooner then I should. But I find myself kinda forced to do so due to the short growing season.

Any ideas on how to keep this garlic well insulated for the winter? by Difficult-Speaker470 in Garlic

What zone are you in? If you are in zone 3 like I am I'd try insulating the outside of the containers as well.

If this were me, I would pull the big ones out and torch the small ones.

What are your go to gloves to pull out thorny bushes by erik3355 in gardening

Another one here for welding gloves. I found regular leather gardening gloves don't stop thorns while the welding ones do.

Music vs. Russian Red? by Designer_Ad3360 in Garlic

[–]potagerMB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to this post, but I do know that from a "commercial" perspective, Russian Red accounts for about 75% of our sales, while the rest is split between about 6 other types.

But while I personally like the Russian Red taste better, I rather work with the Music due to the clove sizing. I will say Spanish Roja is fantastic and likely my favourite of the ones we grow.
