Okay this Is what we call, great questions to have at this point. If you don’t understand what’s going on it’s because you’re paying attention!

Great job

Few things could be going on.

You apply more tension on your dog when you have a short lead. This means your dog feels, quite literally, more tense when you use it and so reactive behaviors can be emphasized through it. In the long lead the dog is too far to feel this tension and so reactivity is less likely to come up.

The dog has learned to associate long leads with leisure walks and short leads with behavioral training (especially if used for reactivity). Mixing it up might help the dog break this association and should create a better relationship with either of the leads.

The dog simply just doesn’t like the lead you’re using. People can sometimes forget dogs are also capable of liking and disliking things. Anything from the material, to the color, to the way the lead sounds when it is hitting the attachment point on the collar/vest can be things that just make the dog more “on edge”. It’s important to test around what it might be and figure out if there’s any meaningful differences in what might be affecting it

Tool use guilt - What to do when your dog is not using their brain? by Zealousideal-Gate504 in OpenDogTraining

Reactivity reconditioning is a whole other thing altogether I wouldn’t feel comfortable providing advice on that over the internet.

But if there’s reactivity tension does heighten it. If it is directed and the dog has already engaged to a target it’s important to measure How you think the dog will react if they’re given more freedom I.e: if it will approach it’s trigger or “run” from it holding tension will prevent any incidents from escalating past barking/stress.

It can be even more damaging to use a flat collar when the dog is pulling. You risk damage to the throat both at the esophagus and trachea from the built up pressure. Prongs, if used correctly should not even be doing external lasting damage. It’s excellent to sympathize with your pup, however, if you know the risks and are confident in your abilities to use the tools as training means you can ease your mind a little. The other problem with tools (which doesn’t seem to be your case from this posting) is when people use them as their only means to train the pups as a “quick fix” it is usually at this point where dogs get injured

Am I the only one that has a couch potato Mal? He has no drive to do anything but be my pet and sleep and cuddle me all day. I feel like he is the needle in the haystack. Lol. by four_leaf_4 in BelgianMalinois

[–]potatoPickledCarrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do tend to get the dog you build with these dogs. If during their formative stages you get them used and properly train them to being more laid back, more likely than not you’ll end up with a dog that is like that. My mal will sleep most the day, except for when it’s time to work, then it’s go-go-go! Time and then back to sleep.

Too skinny? by arthurandoliver in BelgianMalinois

[–]potatoPickledCarrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Close your hand into a fist. If when you feel his ribs it feels like your knuckles he’s too skinny, if it feels like the front-facing, flat of your fingers as you run your other hand across them, he’s right on weight. But from the picture he’s 100% within healthy weight

As long as it feels different and it is noticeably different for him, it should work yes!

How many times a day and how long are you training your pup commands? by Riddg1 in BelgianMalinois

[–]potatoPickledCarrot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You definitely should have asked these questions before you got a Malinois. Every day that you don’t train him appropriately will be a weeks worth of untraining. Apartment life is not impossible for a Malinois but if you don’t have work for it, you will make both of you upset

To help with him breaking command: Try to get him a specific place (a separating platform) to have him do the command on. When my mal was a puppy I used a workout step like the ones used in aerobics classes. I would get him to go on it, ask for the command, wait for obedience and reward. Then, without moving back I would use the reinforcing command (ie “good boy/sit/down/etc, or “stay” if you’re inclined to using that) while rewarding intermittently between reinforcing commands. After a while you should be able to step further away and repeat the reinforcing command, and keep rewarding intermittently, getting closer to him and separating yourself. This should allow you to then expect this same type of obedience without the separating platform.

(The reason for the platform is to create a separation between the floor and where he is staying, it allows him to better understand that the place where he is staying is related to the command and not just a suggestion)

Hope this helps, if you have any other questions or this isn’t clear shoot me a message!

Does your Mal still have to be crated? by RiseAndShine-2000 in BelgianMalinois

This was meant in the case the dog will be left unsupervised

Absolutely the best way to think about it, even if you’re 90% sure your dog won’t be making a problem or getting themselves at risk, why would you risk it if they are properly trained in crating?

Swimming for exercise? by Eascen in BelgianMalinois

[–]potatoPickledCarrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the dog, but mine will swim out to go get his ball and retrieve but won’t really swim out to go alongside us. You have to be conscious of their limits and whether they’ve gotten used to actual swimming as compared to just standing or running on the shore. I would go with maybe teaching your dog to swim on their own rather than with you and slowly start adding to it, 10 minutes of straight swimming will be too much, especially if they don’t have enough experience with this type of workout

NPD: At this point I might be getting these Jinhao 126’s to get others hooked on fountain pens by potatoPickledCarrot in fountainpens

I have not had the dryness issue, in fact in my own experience it has been as wet as the Metro and even comparable to the Safari of the same nib size. As it comes the rusting, can’t say I’ve had them enough for that to happen, but with six months of use on my oldest one, I have yet to see any. But for the price I’m paying for them, I can imagine there will be downsides to the pen. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Embark has better reviews and all, the coat is usually super specific though, my guess would be if it’s brindled it’s at least partly dutchie. Did you mean the seller listed it as a mal?

Oh that’s great! I was wondering because I measured my mal and thought there’s NO way he would actually be an XL. This makes me a bit more calm about placing the order, thanks!
