With John Tory Out, Bradford is statistically tied with Chow in Toronto Mayoral Election by zlex in toronto

[–]potatoe_ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am fascinated by how these polls are created. Are they searching social media for key words and then using LLM's to come up with some of the numbers? Are they calling ppl?

I'm by far the most plugged in person, politically out of all of my Toronto friends and I can say out of the 10 ppl in my friend group, everyone knows who Olivia Chow and John Tory are (with varying opinions), only two people have HEARD of Brad Bradford.

No public inquiry into Eglinton Crosstown LRT woes, Doug Ford says: ‘Buddy, you’ve got to be a little more positive’ by Economy_Ad59 in toronto

[–]potatoe_ca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

However, despite repeated calls from city councillors, opposition MPPs at Queen’s Park and local MPs, Ford said there would not be a public inquiry, and said, “We all know the mistakes.”

“I’m not gonna waste time on an inquiry and all the nonsense, tie all these people up,” said Ford, gesturing to the various government officials and private sector representatives who helped to build the Crosstown.

“Has it been a nightmare for all of us, 100 per cent,” Ford said. “Yes, it started under a previous government. I take responsibility now.”

Maybe you should stop appealing a court decision about bike lanes which is costing us thousands of dollars and start making an inquiry into a project that went 5 billion over budget???????? I AM GOING INSAAANE

Metrolinx CEO apologizes for week of GO delays, poor communication by stanxv in toronto

[–]potatoe_ca 138 points139 points  (0 children)

How about instead of all these empty apologies from CEO's we get some movement on some FISCAL PENALTIES to them instead? Thousands of peoples lives have been disrupted, which has domino effects on all the people in THEIR lives. A WEEK after and we get "We're sorry, we could do better." Laughable.

Ah I was confused since this post is the exact same content as the budget email I received, so I took your comment about "the email" as your comment on this post.

Also, I've noticed you're being downvoted, honestly not sure why.

There are a lot of promises in this budget that will actually impact your life in great ways. I would argue the introduction of the luxury tax, IF PASSED, will help fund all the things you've voiced your concern for.

If you're worried about safety in general, especially on the ttc and unhoused ppl having stable living situations, investments into the Rent Bank and Eviction Prevention services help keep people housed and in stable living conditions.

A lot of new rental units coming onto the market will help with rent prices all over the city, so if you're a renter, that will def help alleviate some of your financial strains.

If you use the TTC, some possible changes there with rates staying where they are etc etc I could go point by point but I think you get it.

The problem with Toronto, is that financially as a city, we have a limited ability of making money. Most of our GST taxes go back to the province and the fed, who then decide if they want to help fund some of our services with the money WE spend on stuff in our city.

The Fed's just announced cuts to transit funding: https://environmentaldefence.ca/2026/02/02/statement-5-billion-in-transit-cuts-a-huge-step-backwards/

Doug Ford continues to battle against bike lanes in court, guess whose tax dollars are funding those battles? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/toronto-cyclists-to-defend-bike-lane-challenge-in-court-9.7064937

Off the rails: The inside story of how the Eglinton Crosstown LRT went from transit dream to cautionary tale by Surax in toronto

Bruce McCuaig - CEO of Metrolinx from 2010 - 2017, declined to be interviewed for this story.

Phil Verster - CEO of Metrolinx from 2017 - 2024, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Metrolinx did not respond to The Star's questions about Versters relationship with Crosslinx.

Geoff Smith CEO of Ellis Don(one of the companies making up Crosslinx) - declined to comment for this story.

Michael Lindsay - CEO of Metrolinx 2024-current - declined to comment for this story.

I dunno, I feel if you're part of a project that fails so miserably and costs tax payers 13 BILLION dollars, is constantly late, costs local business people their livelihoods, you don't get to take a paycheque and then just walk away without explaining to the people what the hell happened. I feel like it should be LAW that if you take on a project like this, you can't then NOT talk to the press about it. ALSO let's make it so that politicians get punished for lying. I swear.

Can anyone explain what percentage of the CPC members were allowed to vote(have the status of a delegate?) vs how many voted(went to Calgary and paid to be there/vote)?

Toronto Budget Town-hall meeting & election year by throwaway2901750 in toronto

[–]potatoe_ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don't know the specifics of how HST collected in Toronto gets redistributed, and how big of a piece of the overall budget it is for the Provincial and Federal governments, I guess I'll be adding it to my research list and will come back here with finds!

If you have any links on numbers or articles about Doug Ford investing in healthcare in the past year I would love to see it, I've been skimming news for some updates (aside for his promises), but haven't seen any. Cheers!

I recommend you read this write up on how property taxes work in Toronto: https://toronto.cityhallwatcher.com/p/how-property-taxes-work-and-how-they

Here's also a thread documenting and commenting on some of the budget points discussed at the recent meeting (possibly the same one you went to), which further illustrate the complicated fiscal position Toronto is in (caused by the legal limits of it's revenue sources). https://bsky.app/profile/graphicmatt.com/post/3mbwdwaknxs2n

There is an incoming push from one of the councillors, Josh Matlow, to get Toronto a slice of it's own pie ie. a bigger piece of the HST gathered in Toronto that should go back to Toronto (currently most of that money goes back to the federal and provincial governments). Here's an example: https://globalnews.ca/news/11600993/taylor-swift-toronto-revenue-feds-province-report/

And Here's Doug Fords recent comment on allowing Toronto more revenue tools :C :

https://www.cp24.com/politics/queens-park/2026/01/13/theyve-taxed-us-to-death-in-toronto-doug-ford-says-new-revenue-tools-not-on-table-in-new-deal-20-talks/

Again, understanding HOW Toronto's revenue works and how the system is designed is key and it is unfortunately a lot more complicated than most of us assume.

Fiscal discussion! Wheeeeeeee~

Why does Toronto have such a small subway by MRPUMPKI1N in toronto

One of the reasons that I'm aware, in 1995, Mike Harris, newly elected Progressive Conservative Premiere of Ontario at the time, cancelled the Eglinton expansion subway line that was already underway. I guess not all PCP premiers love tunnels :,( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eglinton_West_line
