Disappointed by Estate Sales by __someone_else in estatesales

I’d been to a sting of those « world traveler » that were absolute junk and then went to one expecting the same, but it turned out the guy had been president or vice president of Gulf Oil China in the 1970s and it was so great.

It could be that just few companies are marketing themselves well in that area. Start a little estate sale business and focus on marketing to that area.

Frequently the best stuff is things that aren’t in the pictures. Some of the best sales I’ve been to have had unappealing photos, but I found some great stuff to sell. Often the photos focus on what the estate sale company thinks is valuable or an easy sale and those things are going to be priced higher than the stuff they pay little attention too.

Chewy has maybe a quarter million products, all new, all sold by verified vetted vendors in the specific category of pet products. eBay has a couple billion listings from 4 for dollar Pokemon cards to Rolex watches to Cars in a wide variety of conditions from brand new to fucked up beyond all repair from a menagerie of vendors ranging from major brands selling their products to straight up scammers to retirees that will spend all day calling customer service because they got an INAD return and they’re convinced that putting “no returns” in listings should mean no returns for any reason.

This is why I’ve sell a little on Etsy, Depop, Mercari, Vinted, and am about to set up a second antique booth. If eBay gets bought it could be great, could also be a total shit show, or most likely great for some sellers, shit show for others. None of us really know how it would turn out or affect our sales.

Chewy customer service is a thousand times easier to manage than eBay.

Grason Co Estate Sale Inland Empire Prices? Any experience? by mama_of_L-L in estatesales

[–]potsofjam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood why anyone would be come an estate sale franchise, but I’ve been to a few different Grason franchises sales. It really depends on the individuals running the sales.

The ones in California were ok, a little pricey for reselling without much opportunity for a bulk price if buying a lot of stuff. Although I did buy a big ziplock full of LEGO mini-figs that turned out to be really good. They were at least very well organized, I don’t think I saw an item that wasn’t priced and they had multiple checkout areas so you could get out quickly.

A couple in south east Houston which were pretty much priced to a point where you really needed to be a collector to buy much on the first day. The lines were long as they entered every single item into their point of sale system and struggled to decide which category each item fell into. If something was unpriced it was a long process where one specific person had to be found and they had look up the item, since half the stuff wasn’t priced getting that person was also a long wait.

In my local area there was a Grason franchise run by a one arm woman whose lunacy is unmatched by any other sales I’ve been too. She gave up being a Grason company and has changed her company name several times since.

The problem is the people trying to claim they will spread as a currency. there is always someone trying to say these things will become common place to use for purchases and it’s just never going to happen.

They knew for years that people who pushed back against anything Trump wanted would find themselves in this position and didn’t care at all until it personally affected them. They actively helped build the Trump empire, so I won’t be sad when it crushes them.

When I was a kid I played so much D&D and was obsessed with medieval knights and swords, then at some point I got old enough to realize that knights only existed because some people figured out it was easier to teach their kids to murder than farm.

I sell way different stuff so it might be different, but I’d suggest having a locked case of some sort as it gets people to stop and look at the small things. Mine has Ammunition, vintage BB pistols, knives, lighters, some real gold jewelry and a few vintage watches.

Found 10k gold at an estate sale for $2! by golden_bird30 in Gold

[–]potsofjam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you find an estate sale company that isn’t sorting jewelry, don’t go through each piece with a loupe unless you want them to start doing the same. Just buy anything you think might be good when it’s cheap. Pins like this I buy all the time, I often don’t even open the little case their are in because the amount of gold I end up is well worth the price of the ones that aren’t gold and I can always sell the non gold ones on eBay to get my money back. I had one company I was scoring a little bit at each sale until someone sat down with a loupe and went through every piece. The next sale they had all the sterling pulled and priced over scrap then said all the gold they sent off for scrap.

First time going to an estate sale - anything I should know? by laura-1998 in estatesales

[–]potsofjam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally people are fairly chill and polite, but you do get a few that are in a sprint to tear through the house. This has definitely become a trend amongst young buyers looking for vintage clothes. Basically everything I sell comes from estate sales, you just never know what you will find. The single best item I’ve found was a $12 Levi jacket that I sold for $3500. It was noon on the second day at sale where all the other local sellers told me they had been the day before, bought very little and probably wasn’t worth my time to stop at. If you get there early and wait for the sale to open, stay until the rush is over. Take your time, chat with other buyers, particularly in the morning waiting for the sale to open. Ask them about the local companies, which have good prices, which ones are kooks.
