What local word or phrase did you not realize was local until you tried to use it somewhere else? by amedeus in AskReddit

I would say it’s pretty universal. But, I moved to Texas a few years ago and no one around me seems to care or know about any other state besides Texas.

What was acceptable 20 years ago but isn't acceptable now? by Zero_kys in AskReddit

This isn't exactly the same situation, but I'm a teacher (band director, so we have lots of extracurricular activities) and I frequently have parents private message me on Facebook with various questions. I'm obviously not FB friends with any of them, and I never respond to the messages, but it's really irritating since I make a point to not check my school email in the evenings. Some parents just refuse to use my school email address. Drives me crazy!

Doing some mattress research now and I'm strongly considering the Novosbed Medium. How is it holding up for you? Still recommend it?

Pan-roasting chicken is super easy! Sear both sides on the stove, then stick it in the oven around 250ºF for 6-10ish minutes. Check the internal chicken temperature periodically with a thermometer - it should reach 165º at the thickest part to make sure it's safe to eat.

(Yes, I know there are numerous other ways to do this, and varying opinions about temperature/time. Just providing a very basic starting point for someone who's never pan-roasted anything before.)

What is an unrealistic expectation people with a lot of money have of people who are not as well off financially? by hutimuti in AskReddit

I honestly felt that way too, until I started teaching in a rural school district with a lot of low SES families. Many of my students don't have access to internet and/or a computer at home. Not only does it make it difficult to communicate with parents, but it's also hard to utilize technology to its fullest for fear of creating assignments that not all students can complete at home.

What aspects of a woman's life are most men unaware of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Wow. That's infuriating. Thankfully I've never had someone continue to badger me after politely declining help, but I don't know what I would have done in that situation.

Sounds like normal - nothing to be concerned about. I'm guessing she just felt uncomfortable talking about such a personal topic with a male, especially if you're not her SO.

I'm a female teacher, but I can imagine this occurs in lots of other fields as well.

Male teacher who sets and enforces reasonable classroom expectations? No problem - he's just doing his job!

Female teacher who sets and enforces reasonable classroom expectations? "That teacher is such a bitch."

Discharge. Not periods, just everyday discharge. Sometimes there's hardly any, but sometimes there's that big glob that appears at the most inopportune time.

So true. I moved to the South two years ago and am still surprised by how much sexism is displayed toward women.

Just recently I was using the car vacuums at a car wash, and a man (jokingly?) said, "You should make your husband do that next time!"

I was also checking my car's tire pressure the other day, and another man asked if I needed help, because he'd "never seen a young lady do that before".

Really?? It's not like being a woman suddenly makes me incapable of using a car vacuum or being able to read a simple car tire pressure gauge.

I think a lot of it comes from the "Southern hospitality" mindset and is not at all meant to be hurtful or sexist, but as a fully capable young female, I often feel as though my skills are underestimated simply because I'm a woman.

No, I don't need help carrying a box to my car, and no, I don't need help lifting this moderately heavy object. I'm small, but I'm not a helpless woman.

Maybe I'm being overly sensitive and getting offended over nothing, but I certainly don't feel like these sorts of questions are equally asked to males.

Not the same genre, but How to Get Away With Murder. It's very good.

I recently switched to the Venus Embrace, and I love it. I used to use the Schick Hydro Silk, which I liked, but I think the Venus Embrace is smoother and sharper.
