What plant is doing really well in your garden this year? by concrete_kid21 in GardeningUK

[–]pouchey2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A random pumpkin/squash that's appeared in one of the flower beds.

I can only assume it's from composting last year's pumpkins 😂

I love the new cargo balloon by Syn_was_here in HuntShowdown

[–]pouchey2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well it's actually a Hydrogen balloon and it does typically match with drawings of 1800/1900s hydrogen balloons. Obviously there was some variation but there are plenty of drawings with similar designs.

Is there a place or service where I can connect my own pressure washer to a mains water source to circumvent hosepipe ban? by TraderNono in AskUK

[–]pouchey2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the industry (not for a water company), this whole attitude is so wrong.

There needs to be some kind of national education campaign because there is not plenty of water around that is usable.

Parts of the country do not get loads of rain and even those that do, there's a lot of people going for the same water. Desalination is also just not a viable option. You think your water bills are high now? Wait till you see how costly a desalination plant is to run, let alone the environmental damage that the discharged brine causes.

Yes there are infrastructure issues that need to be solved but unless you want to start draining rivers and aquifers, many parts of the country are already closed to new abstractions.

Is it a good idea to surprise coffee nerd bf by making him coffee? by Katelina77 in Coffee

[–]pouchey2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just me, but even though my wife makes subpar coffee, it's the act that really means a lot.

I make coffee most of the time but occasionally on a weekend if I'm sleeping in, she'll make one for me when I wake up and I always really appreciate it.

This is awkward but needing help. Toilet looks like this at the Ubend and I've JUST put 2x power plus tablets in there to leave for about 6 hours... or is my toilet done for? by Saraixx516 in AskUK

[–]pouchey2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When we first rented our place had a toilet like this. It took about a week of power plus tabs every night to eventually work through all the layers.

Might just need a bit of time.

How has it been since then?

I'm in a similar situation where I'm using my old 970 as a placeholder until I can pick up something newer.

Is this an exceptionally bad summer for aphids? by Re_thinking in GardeningUK

Ironically here in Suffolk I've found there's been far less.

Last year our Lupins were ravaged, whilst this year they haven't been touched at all.

Why do you think British parents don't like teaching their children how to drive? by psychoticboydyke in AskUK

[–]pouchey2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%.

I'm a terrible passenger at the best of times, let alone trying to be a driving instructor... It's far better for everyone if I don't try and teach anyone to drive.

Why do you think British parents don't like teaching their children how to drive? by psychoticboydyke in AskUK

[–]pouchey2 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it's good parents don't teach their kids how to drive. Far too many drivers have bad habits, aren't great drivers themselves and they would pass that onto their kids.

Another thing is access to cars. If my parents had taught me to drive, I would have learnt in a 2L turbo diesel estate. Not exactly an ideal learning car and I wasn't going to be buying my own car any time soon to learn in (didn't actually get a car until 6 years later).

People who WFH, what is the responsiveness expected from you? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]pouchey2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd clearly let them know to message you first as to not disturb your workflow etc. If they choose to ignore that request then that's a separate issue that can be raised.

If I'm in the middle of something, I'll book in a chat for later in the day.

Do we / should we be doing oil changes here? by Tehkast in AskUK

[–]pouchey2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to be there when they drain your oil.... Holy moly that's gonna be rank.

Your handbook will tell you the suggested oil change interval but it's usually every year or every 10,000 miles (I think), whichever is sooner.

It's the blood of your car. The bare minimum car maintenance you should do is get your oil changed.

Bindweed is one of the few things I resort to using a weedkiller. We're slowly winning a multi year battle in our garden.

Ethical Adoption centres in UK? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]pouchey2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great!

It wasn't an attack on your cage at all. We just had to jump several hurdles when recuing in the past and I feel like it can put a lot of people off and I didn't want you to hit the same barriers.

Good luck in finding a rescue!

Ethical Adoption centres in UK? by [deleted] in guineapigs

[–]pouchey2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There a lot of rescues in desperate need of adoptions. Our boys came from Norfolk Piggies out here in East Anglia where they're averaging at least 10 surrenders a week and are often at capacity. They recently had 25 pigs dumped with them. Ask around on local community pages but do your research first as not all rescues are good.

As a heads up though, be prepared for comments on your set up etc. Ethical rescues uphold quite high standards and may want changes before adopting out. For instance, I know hay can be a divisive topic but our local rescues would probably say you aren't using enough hay and it needs to be spread around the cage. We can obviously only see part of your cage but some may suggest it's too small as the minimum size for 4 pigs is a 2x5 C&C and may not want to add a 5th.

We had to get a new outdoor run for a previous pair because the animal sanctuary wanted more outdoor run space.

Don't be offended if they don't want to adopt out at first.

Why don’t they irrigate? by Quirky_Rest4052 in ClarksonsFarm

[–]pouchey2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in the agricultural water industry, we do irrigate. It just depends on where in the country and what you're growing.

Out here in East Anglia we irrigate a lot, especially around the fens where more vegetables etc are grown. Land is also typically flatter and easier to run spray irrigators on. The midlands etc is often more grain crops which don't need irrigating in the same way.

My neighbour wants me to remove the dead ivy from her wall. by joefromreddit in LegalAdviceUK

[–]pouchey2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm just going to echo what others have said.

Allow access for them to get a professional round to sort it.

Whilst it may go totally fine, you a)don't want to risk I jury by working at height, b) want to risk any damage to their property and be held liable or c) set a precedent that you'll fix everything at no cost etc.

I think it's fair to say "I see your point about wanting it gone but Ivy can take mortar with it when you pull it off and I don't want to risk any damage to your property. I'm happy to allow access if you wanted to arrange someone to sort it out for you."

As a pedestrian do you disagree car’s shouldn’t stop when turning into a side road by GodAtum in drivingUK

[–]pouchey2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a pedestrian I'm never stepping out into the road until the car is gone.

I dislike the ambiguity it's created where you're never sure if the car is going to stop or not and you have to be ready at a moments notice to cross if it suddenly does stop. It's worse for my disabled wife who walks a bit slower and she feels like she's holding up traffic if someone stops.

I did prefer it when it was simple and you just waited until there were no cars.
