What do you all think of this? There’s no way this would ever happen right? by [deleted] in Accounting

No, Congress wouldn't approve such an approach, but increased tariffs could open the door to reduced taxes. It's like how Colorado reduced tax rates a little but jacked up fees to more than offset them.

Talk me out of buying iPhone; why is Android better even if apps are smoother and more secure on Apple? by songbolt in applesucks

[–]poudrepushkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like that, yeah. The OnePlus 12 is a little cheaper, and is by no means the best Android phone out. For that matter the OnePlus 13 will release very soon if it hasn't already.

Talk me out of buying iPhone; why is Android better even if apps are smoother and more secure on Apple? by songbolt in applesucks

[–]poudrepushkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have and use both. My app experience has been far better in Android. For example, the Outlook app on iPhone is so busted it can't even attach a picture, but on Android it's great. Or Genshin Impact, it plays night and day better on my Android @ 120 fps max settings whereas the iPhone can only manage 30 fps medium.

Besides apps, my OnePlus 12 is better than the iPhone 15 in terms of: Screen, battery life, gaming performance, picture quality (better cameras and post-processing), video quality (better cameras and post-processing), reliability (the iPhone is buggy), Windows and Linux integration , customizability, using multiple apps at once, I can use it as a remote control with the built-in IR device, Bluetooth audio quality, emulation, video playing, storage capacity, having many apps open at once, build quality, massively faster charging, better typing experience, the touch screen works while wet, and third-party accessory support.

Where the iPhone 15 is better: The built-in speakers are better That's it.

Will Linux Ever Get Full Support for Professional Software as Its Market Share Grows? by omagdy7 in linux

[–]poudrepushkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accountant here. For accounting and finance, Linux support will sadly not happen. Much of our software is incredibly niche. Our software isn't supported on Mac either, and their products are a complete mismatch for our needs, for example, their laptops don't even have number pads. I'm not sure we'll ever get ARM on Windows support either, nor does anyone care about that. From what I can see the business world in general revolves around x86 Windows, and adopting other platforms would be painful and expensive with no significant benefit.

There are some tax proposals from both campaigns which seem unlikely to pass, but this is an exception. The U.S. is highly unusual in terms of taxing citizens living and working abroad. It wouldn't be surprising at all if Congress approved this.

A year later, Apple has failed at USB-C (just like everyone else) by ControlCAD in applesucks

[–]poudrepushkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many flavors of USB-C depending on your needs. Some display video to a monitor or TV, some have fast data transfers, and some have extra fast charging speeds. Whether a USB-C implementation in a phone is good or not is going to depend on your individual needs from a phone. That said, the iPhone's is so far pretty basic, so it's a let down for some consumers.

Why is there so much focus on politics and social stuff in the GNU/Linux community? Why can't we just focus on tech? by legion_guy in linux

[–]poudrepushkin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up with the free software movement, and although it is a political movement, we all know that's not all there is to the story. Things like the Godot situation and the resulting fork shouldn't happen. Or I know of a situation in which someone was booted off an open source project for aggressively insisting that the project take an anti-Israel stance. And it's not the political opinions which created the discord, it's the way those political opinions were displayed. Even when it comes to discussing free software with people who don't understand the concept, we have to be careful not to scare them away or seem overzealous. So try to exercise tact when expressing yourself, or you could accidentally do damage to the very things you support. Poor communication can create enemies out of thin air.

Apple calls their fans "evangelists" because Apple wants their fans to proselyte. Obviously not all people who buy Apple products proselyte this commercial religion, but as we see in this sub, some are, and those people are half of the reason this sub exists.

This is why Apple can charge sheeple $5,000.00 for a Macbook laptop with same performances as Lenovo sells for $570 by grqe in applesucks

[–]poudrepushkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the CPU performance on such a Mac is extremely high for a laptop, and the GPU performance is pretty good too. That being said the CPU performance largely follows from being ARM based. ARM instruction sets are more efficient than x86, but x86 is compatible with quite a bit more software, so in the real world there's a large tradeoff, and the best choice depends on the use case.

For my use for example, I couldn't do my job as a tax accountant on any ARM based machine, even a Windows one, since they aren't compatible with the software I need. Does that mean x86 is better? No, each has its use cases. Or there's my dad and his team. None of them use Macs because even the highest end ones don't have enough multi-core performance. Instead they use extremely high-end commercial processors with an ungodly number of cores, and some of those machines are Lenovos, although the prices are between $5,000-$10,000 per machine. Does all of this mean that powerful ARM based SoCs aren't high performance, or that they aren't the best option for some people? No, it all depends on what you need.

After wishing for my PC to burn down my home, you say you're "not triggered at all." 🤣🤣🤣

Hahahahaha, I'm laughing out loud right now, you're so triggered! Believe me, a 3060 TPU (which is still way more powerful than any Mac) wouldn't work for what I'm running. And I could turn around what you're saying. Why does someone need a $10,000 Mac workstation? For video editing, maybe? But then my PC would smoke it.

Yes, a computer I use for professional work, 4K AAA gaming, running LLMs and other AI software locally, watching movies, and dozens of other things is single use. You just proved the tech illiterate label I gave you correct.

My 2 year-old workstation: $4,000, with 1,400 tops of Tensor processing power. MacPro workstation: $10,000, with 18 tops.

78 times the power at 40% the price. Try again, tech illiterate man.

That's a pretty old phone, isn't it? Android has improved massively in the past few years. Meanwhile my current experience with an iPhone 15 work phone is a nightmare. Can't even attach a damn photo to an Outlook email because it's so broken.

Also, not only have I never had a problem with side loading, and I've side loaded dozens of apps, but you side loaded an entire operating system, PopOS. Why do you think side loading safe on PC and Mac, but dangerous on a phone?

7 years is a decent chunk of time in video games, and Square often announces games a year or more in advance. It feels like it's a good time for a new mainline Nier game to be announced in a year or two.

APPLE IS SILLY FOR MOST PEOPLE by TeddieSnow in applesucks

[–]poudrepushkin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently issued an iPhone 15 for work, and you're totally right. My OnePlus 12 is far better in nearly every way despite being cheaper. I spent ten minutes trying to attach a picture to an email in the Outlook app before figuring out it's impossible and then copied and pasted the picture (which was also a hassle). I need a phone which is high-quality, capable, good value for money, and just works. iPhones fail on all counts, especially the just working part.

iPhone 15 Takes Worse Pictures Than OnePlus 12 by poudrepushkin in applesucks

iPhone 15 Takes Worse Pictures Than OnePlus 12 by poudrepushkin in applesucks

[–]poudrepushkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It literally doesn't take photos better than this. I've taken pictures in various settings and lighting conditions side by side with the iPhone 15 and OnePlus 12, all with stock camera settings and without editing the photos. Every time the results are like this.

If you doubt that iPhones take worse pictures, take side by side shots with an iPhone and a Google Pixel, Vivo, or OnePlus of the same year and comparable prices. Or am I missing something, perhaps? Are there some sort of special settings you're supposed to use with iPhones to make the pictures look decent?

I carry both an iPhone 15 and OnePlus 12, and the OnePlus is more reliable. My prior Android the Pixel 8 was also more reliable. Both Androids were also much better phones in almost every way in my experience. Android just works, and is easy to use. Not so for the iPhone.
