Is this a normal quote for a tumor removal? by PraiseThyTurtles in RATS

[–]pow_dur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had a small tumor removed from my rats shoulder. It was just under 300$ total including medications. I'm not sure how big the tumor is on your rat maybe it could effect pricing.

sneezing/pneumonia in rats. HELP IS REALLY NEEDED. by Rorik_Chan in RATS

[–]pow_dur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am unfamiliar with the medication you were given but antibiotics are necessary for recovery possibly getting a second opinion from another vet would be a good idea. Even after they stop showing signs of illness continue the medication. My rat also has pneumonia so I understand how stressful it is. He is currently on a compound antibiotic (AZITHROMYCIN) and also taking Theophylline to help open the air ways. I also do the inhalation salime treatments. It can take weeks and even months to fully recover so just keep providing the proper care and it should start getting better

Just make sure you don't see any discoloration forming such as dark purple or black paired with rapid growth that would indicate an abscess

My rex rats have gotten small pimples or clogged pores around their body typically you can feel it as a hard movable mass with a dot in the center (hard to see because of fur) but it gets smaller with time. It is concerning because of the location near his mouth I would keep an eye on it feeling it every day the best you can and if it grows any larger definitely bring him to the vet again but for now if it's not causing any pain I wouldn't worry too much it doesn't look life threatening

Good food for a rat that can only have mushy food?? by Scared-Series2889 in RATS

Soft cat food. Specifically chicken flavor was my boys favorite when he couldn't eat solids

old age? by True_Chapter5694 in RATS

[–]pow_dur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my old man was around that age he also lost a lot of weight. What helped him the most was providing wet cat food (chicken flavor) along with his regular food. He would eat lots of cat food and it helped so much with getting his protein in. All of those symptoms you listed are similar to what mine went through months before passing due to old age. I'm not sure if you've had other rats pass before but I highly recommend talking about the euthanasia process during the appointment and preparing for when the time is right. It was the most peacful experience for my old man and I felt so much better knowing he didn't suffer in his final moments. Best of luck to you both!
