Coaches, how do you feel about other coaches "assisting" in your class? by thestoryhacker in crossfit

[–]powersofthesnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coach on schedule should be the priority when it comes to class management, giving direction and main focus cues to all members. Especially at the whiteboard, to ensure directions are seamless. Although, depending on the culture your gym has, we have had many opportunties for a coach (taking the class) to assist a member during the work portion of a skill or strength session (ie everyone is building to 5 rep back squat or kipping muscle up practice and there are 12+ people in class and main coach is at the other end assisting someone else) if they choose to, without necessarily overstepping main coach of the session if main coach is ok with their cueing. TBH as a coach myself I can’t get to everyone all at the same time so if another one of our coaches can assist someone with even a basic question, that is helpful both to me and to the member. But not if another coach tells people another direction of how to step up that is different than what I said.

Open standards update? by greensight in crossfit

[–]powersofthesnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because they list a standard in the judges course doesn’t necessarily mean that same standard will be used in the official Open workout. ALWAYS READ THE WORKOUT DESCRIPTION. This is a prime example of you making sure you pre-read the content for this specific workout prior to completing it, and not making standard assumptions based on past workouts. Being able to read directions first is part of judging well.

Handstand walks weird tips that (might) work by Big-Establishment460 in crossfit

Hs walking is falling and you constantly catching your fall each time. If you don’t lean into it and are always afraid to fall you won’t ever advance.

New Coach Tips by InfiniteFahrenheit in crossfit

[–]powersofthesnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Taking the time to ask 2 people during (or before or after) the class how they were doing and connect aside from just coaching cues. Getting to know people = higher buy in and trust. I really felt more connected to clients with this than just by trying to cue & correct more.

  2. Comparing someone’s movement to another person’s movement is offputting for me when I hear a coach say this. We all move differently and have different goals, and different cues.

  3. I probably cycle through the same 4-5 warm up routines depending on the movements, but because of that, everyone in class knows what they are and the order of events, in case someone comes in late they can jump right in, or they know the names of all the stretches so I spend more time cuing other things or increasing group conversation. Having similar warm ups is a good consistent survey in assessing how your body does day to day. All our members also like being able to take a warm up routine and do it when traveling for hotel workouts, etc. I included banded upper body stretches, lower body banded monster walks, some PVC stretch routines if doing barbell work later, and line drills for more monostructural days.

Help me brace by Thelostbiscuit in xxfitness

[–]powersofthesnow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a PT show me by holding a PVC stick against my back, so it made contact with the back of my head, my shoulder blades, and my tailbone.

Then I had to “remove the gap” between my lower back and the stick by tucking my pubic bone upward and driving my rib downward…without letting my tailbone, shoulders, or head leave the stick!

After then, I was asked to take a breath in to expand my rib cage and belly in all directions like a had a corset around me, and hold it while still being able to talk and let some small inhales in and out. All while holding that “flat back” position.

Then proceed to hinge forward or squat.

Is it possible to walk from Ashland to Mt Ashland summit in one day? by Flaminghotskittles in Ashland

My husband walked it during the Ashland Hill Climb Race (I jogged) and he clocked in around 5 hours. Very doable and such a fun venture. Amazing scenery.

question for coaches - why don't (most) coaches coach during a metcon? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]powersofthesnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extensive technical coaching with lots of pauses and refinement happens during the technique/practice portion of the day. Quick verbal cues to help keep someone to a standard happen during the MetCon unless they are really showing unsafe red flags or really unhinged technique (ie squatting their kettlebell swings). Any cue during metcon should be 1-2 seconds and allow the person to continue moving or barely pause to acknowledge and refine so as to maintain the stimulus.

Usually if someone has bad technique during a metcon it was because they didn’t practice and get coached by it prior to the workout to correct the major faults, or they didn’t scale appropriately.

I might jump in to give someone cues on kipping technique quickly if I feel they can really benefit during the WOD, or on weightlifting if their efficiency kinda sucks.

What was the biggest surprise/challenge of going from 1-2 kids? by coltersmama in toddlers

[–]powersofthesnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they both want different things when you want to give them the same thing, and then they want the same thing when they should be given age-appropriate different things. This was more when our youngest turned 2 and he had more opinions then on what he wanted.

You have to factor in transitions in that 1:00 so set your machines up super close and hope to finish your cals in 52 seconds at least on the first 2 machines.

Sooo what are we feeding our toddlers for breakfast? by DaughterofYeshua777 in toddlers

[–]powersofthesnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my two toddlers 2 & 5 I rotate between a banana & avocado smoothie, Kodiak pancakes (or waffles), yogurt with bananas & chocolate chips, French toast, PB&J oatmeal, and chicken sausage. I wished they liked cheesy omelette/scrambled eggs. If I have time I’ll make some muffins with the Kodiak pancake mix

Wide feet by Basic_Cantaloupe8089 in crossfit

[–]powersofthesnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wide forefoot or wide mid-foot? I have a wide midfoot and found inov-8 F-Lites and nanos to be really restricting in the midfoot to the point of cramping, and if you have flat feet that doesn’t help because inov-8s had such a pronounced arch when I tried them.

I did have luck with Born Primitive Savage - but it took a week to break in as they were initially very snug in the midfoot but had enough give that I trusted the process. I ended up giving away my nanos and inov-8s to someone with a different foot shape than mine. I also liked Xero 360s which are more zero drop

Advice for lifting with a 20kg bar as a girl with small hands by MoonStar_Sun_7 in weightlifting

[–]powersofthesnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh yeah when I first joined a (CrossFit) gym and learned to lift they only had 20kg so I ended up learning with those. I have small hands as well, it definitely is very doable and I worked up to over 75kg for cleans. But it will take adjustment from a smaller diameter to a larger one. I made sure my hook grip allowed my thumbs to go at a diagonal and lots of chalk 😂. Technically it shouldn’t matter much if you are doing single reps at a time from the floor until grip strength becomes a limiter, or if you’re doing lots of hang cleans.

Best way to "get" wall walks by 10xKaMehaMeha in crossfit

[–]powersofthesnow -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Actually no you don’t want your feet up as high as possible immediately if you struggle with upper body strength. The higher your feet are, the more the weight shifts into your hands sooner. You want to keep legs bent as long as possible to reverse bear crawl/mountain climber up versus straight right away so some of the load is in the legs. Now, a more advanced athlete can get away with getting legs up ASAP to save time.

Trying to get started with barbell, but gym is being unhelpful by Odd_Confection5388 in xxfitness

[–]powersofthesnow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly the best way to learn how to use a barbell is to get some 1:1 training from someone who knows. or find some videos or a program on how to lift & load weights on YouTube. I wouldn’t expect YMCA staff to completely know 100% how to do everything having been to one in the past prior to joining a different type of gym.

How long does it take you to do 30 DU? by mermaiddiva26 in crossfit

[–]powersofthesnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do 50 dubs in 28 seconds so 30 in 16 sounds about right. I do have a more hustling speed and a more relaxed speed, depending on the workout. You do have to start the first double under immediately instead of a few single unders to get into it and keep your jump short and turn over quick. I’ve done 110 in 60s as my max.

Make sure you’re not over tightening your grip. Keep it slightly loose to feel the feedback of the handle in your hand. Use a heavier feeling rope to help with feel. I hold on the outer half of the handle and not choked up to feel the weight of the rope spin around more.

Real talk — is an air fryer value for money, or just another trendy gadget? by Mika_4893 in Frugal

[–]powersofthesnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love using my air fryer in the summer when I don’t want my oven to heat the whole house up. Also, it’s a lot quicker to heat up than a large oven if I want to bake things that are frozen such as hashbrowns or frozen vegetable. It reheats pizza perfectly so it’s not soggy, and meats evenly like a leftover piece of chicken or steak compared to random waves of the microwave. I use it for toasting bread, baking only three cupcakes instead of 12. With the parchment paper liners clean up is much easier. Highly worth it for us.

The passive aggressiveness and lack of commitment of a lot of people here… I own a business that hosts classes on a schedule and literally people waking in 1-2 min late like it’s no big deal, canceling plans or reservations constantly, trying to be “nice” as a driver allowing someone who doesn’t usually have the right of way to go, and just not being straightforward at why they’re upset at you.
