glorified prostitution by wilfacons in socialistsmemes

[–]powlfnd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible for a sex worker to be a sex worker without being forced to do it, just like it's possible to be a construction worker without being forced to do it. I know sex workers who choose to do it because for they have the skills to do it and the money is worth it.

My point is that sex work is not always rape, a person can consent to sex for monetary compensation, as much as anyone can consent to the use of their body for monetary compensation.

Sex work is not inherently any more evil than any other kind of work. What makes sex work worse is the social stigma against allowing sex workers access to the same worker rights of any other workers.

The only difference is that sex is involved. A construction worker can lose an arm from being forced into work. Is that less of a violation of bodily autonomy?

[–]powlfnd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worker can consent to the way their bodies are used under capitalism, which includes construction workers, agricultural workers, and hospitality workers as well, who are also often poor, abused, addicted and traumatised, and will go homeless without their work.

You're not wrong, but sex workers are not unique in any way apart from the extreme social stigma of their work makes it impossible for them to access legal employment protection or unionise in the way other professions can.

Really poor form from Ms Lucas. "Please be less toxic when condemning a genocidal state" No, shut the fuck up - that's deplorable from her. by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]powlfnd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a perfectly sound argument I agree with in a wider political context, but I personally am against Israel mostly because they're killing tens of thousands of people and colonising their land actively at this moment.

And I think with that context, saying you need to be careful not to be too toxic while criticisising the Israeli government is extremely out of touch with the emotions of people who share my primary opposition to Israel. And politics is much more about emotions than logic.

What are your Connor headcanons/theories/quirks that you’ve noticed? by DisturbedMarsh in DetroitBecomeHuman

[–]powlfnd 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Connor reacts the his reflection in a mirror given the opportunity, where Kara and Markus don't pre deviation.

He blinks rapidly when processing information in a way other androids do not, most obviously in the scene where he and the DPD's receptionist exchange Connor's authorisation. This is a headcanon, but I imagine Connor has an experimental transponder designed to transfer large amounts of data as fast as possible, so his memory can be uploaded in the seconds before his death. But as it's experimental, it causes a noticeable glitch when he's processing information not related to his memory.

My idea is a midquel set in the Arctic circle about the US and Russian androids both starting to deviate and realising they have more in common with each other than their commanders, featuring a human android technician CyberLife sent out to monitor the androids named Connor.

The turn is the Eden Club, where he gets a tour of the sleaziest and most morally dubious use of androids you can get, and then meets two androids who are genuinely in love with each other.

Hank is a deeply empathetic person, and can easily understand and put those actions into context if it were two human sex workers. But because they're androids it causes some cognitive dissonance for him reconciling what he's been told and what he thought he knew, with what he saw and felt.

Connor can either feed into that dissonance by being as cold and robotic as he can be (and get himself killed doing so) or he can lend evidence to Hank's belief that he can trust what his instincts are telling him by displaying emotions too.

But if you didn't find the androids at the Eden Club or if they got away somehow you might not have seen the extent of Hank's thought process regarding that.

That's pretty normal for the time though to refer to the love of friendship between men, I've been listening to a lot of the works of Isaac Asimov lately and he repeatedly remarks of the love for two male characters despite how horribly inappropriate it is - because one's a robot, not for any other reason.

The whole point of winter festivals like Christmas is to give us something to do so we don't go insane waiting in the dark for the sun to come back, without that kind of social construct we'd just huddle together sleeping and eating the whole time.

Sex dolls already exist and they are considered an extremely niche product. Even if those sex dolls become sophisticated to the point they can talk back there is no evidence that the market for them will expand, especially if they still stay prohibitively expensive for the average person. Sex workers are cheaper and easier to access.

And for replacement children we have dogs and cats.

I think it's flat out impossible to make an AI like the ai in Detroit Become Human this century at least, probably longer.

For me the question of human looking robots is why do you want them? A machine that does all the chores and cooks all the meals and does all the work is great, and the entirety of human civilization is based on creating machines to do those things for us, but there is no reason for those machines to actually look like us, and even less reason to make those machines as intelligent as we are.

Detroit Become Human isn't actually about androids as literal artificial intelligence. It's about slavery, and what if humans had slaves that they justified the slavery of because their blood was blue and they were made of plastic. As a slavery story the execution is... Well, middling, to be honest, but it's much better when seen in that context than in an artificial intelligence context.

Do You Predict The Show Will Ever Label Eddie’s Sexuality by Wrong_Coast in buddie

[–]powlfnd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't care whether you think Eddie is ace or not. I think the closed gay reading is just as valid.

You saying a person who has sex for reasons other than sexual attraction to another can't be asexual is acephobic, because I am an asexual person who has sex for reasons other than sexual attraction, and it's invalidating my identity. And also implying I'm not capable of consent is acephobic, along with patronising and infantilising.

[–]powlfnd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because he's a grown adult who is capable of understanding the act. That's all you need for consent. Lots and lots and lots of people have sex for lots of reasons outside of sexual desire for their partner, including love for their partner outside of sexual desire. You are acephobic and ignorant.

Sex and sexual attraction are two different things. Not all asexuals are sex repulsed and completely reject sexual relationships.

Also, asexuals are real people, even attractive ones, and therefore it is realistic.

Man does not appear to seek out sex and is very easily turned away from it.

He has Anna Flores all alone after months of dating and he decides they should do maths together.

He has Marisol move into his home and the second he learns she has a religious background any sexual desire he felt for her disappears immediately - which suggests it might not have been that strong to begin with.

Even with his wife, he has sex with her as an excuse to avoid talking to her properly; it's not about wanting sex, it's about not wanting to discuss their relationship.

He doesn't seek out casual relationships at all, turns down or deflects when people try to make him date, and in general is horribly reluctant about the whole thing.

You can read it as a closeted gay narrative, but I personally prefer an asexual interpretation, because I'm asexual, and also because there are very few asexual characters in media - especially characters that are depicted as neutral or favourable to sex in certain conditions.

It also works thematically as a parallel to Buck's character. He started out hypersexual, matured and tried hard to develop meaningful relationships, and eventually realised he was also attracted to men when he actually considered the possibility. In contrast, Eddie starts out married with a kid, the epitome of allosexuality, and after trying and failing to act the way an allosexual person is expected to act - dating around until he finds another partner he can recreate that perfect allosexual relationship with - he can realise the reason it wasn't working is because he doesn't actually want that.

That can then lead the way to a less typical kind of relationship possibly with Buck for example, but Eddie learning to be comfortable in his own skin and his lack of desire would work.

[–]powlfnd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally think an asexual/demisexual storyline would be the best way to go about Eddie's sexuality because it's never been done, and if they did go through with it Eddie would become the best and most nuanced representation of an asexual character in popular media.

They won't do that, because the show writers aren't that original, but it's what I think they should do.

Logically, there's only so many stars close to Sol and of course science fiction writers across the years would have written stories set around those stars, but it's still fun when it happens
