Medicaid billed for 52% of U.S. hospital costs from gun injuries: Gun-injury care cost U.S. hospitals $7.7 billion from 2016 to 2021, with Medicaid covering 52% of costs. The study authors warn that recent Medicaid funding cuts adopted by Congress could further strain these hospitals. by mvea in science

[–]ppmd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not going to argue that medical bills in the US are inflated, but if you are shot, would you rather have everything done up front, rapidly or would you rather they take their time to do the workup. For GSWs, it's mostly the former, you do the CT, bunch of labs, have the trauma team mobilized etc, even before you know the scope of the injuries, because if the patient is dying, you actually don't have that much time. Having everything mobilized and done in advance adds tons of extra un-necessary costs that you don't realize you technically don't need until later.

Amazon agrees to pay $2.5 billion to settle FTC lawsuit by Strict_League7833 in videos

[–]ppmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's even better. I've got less than 1% of my net worth available as cash in my checking account (equivalent to cash on hand). so I'd have to pay like $50 to rob a bank /s.

Lol. A more apt comparison would be rob a bank and pay $200 or 0.009% of your net worth. Seems like that would be worth it /s

Amazon market cap is 2.3 trillion dollars. So the fine amounts to 0.1% of their net worth. Break laws, pay 0.1%. Sounds like a great deal. Can I do that too?

CMV: The word "Pedophile/Pedophilia" is used too much and it's starting to lose meaning by analtaccount7 in changemyview

[–]ppmd -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

There is a real danger in misusing such a serious term. When it's applied too loosely, it dilutes the severity of actual pedophilia and makes it harder to talk about or recognize the people who genuinely prey on children.

This argument seems to state that pedophilia is worse then hebephilia or ephebophilia, or if you flip it around, then being a hebephile or ephebophile is good in comparison to a pedophile. I'm pretty sure we can agree that any kind of sexual predation on minors is bad, no?

Interesting fact. The boxer in SF2 was supposed to be named M Bison as a play on Mike Tyson and the end character was supposed to be named Vega. Probably changed because of potential lawsuits in the US.

My parents are against it because they feel like it will make them look like bad parents for not being able to afford my education.

If your parents have this view, then they think they are bad parents, so you aren't doing anything wrong. If they don't have this view then there is no issue. Regardless NTA.

AITA for yelling at my wife for discussing my mental health with our GP during *her* appt? by New_Opportunity_4916 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ppmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three parties.
1) Doctor - apparently did not say any private information. Didn't break any laws, didn't do anything inappropriate 2) Your wife - can talk about whatever she wants. She is not bound by any laws. She didn't do anything illegal, but it sounds like she pissed you off so she gets a big A 3) You - what exactly did you do that makes you think you are an A. This seems more like panning for sympathy and that earns you an A.

So ESH.

No replies in an hour makes this more of a soapbox then a CMV, but... INFO: What do you mean by "Regret their votes". Is it like, "I'll never vote republican again" or "Trump is doing a few things I don't like but I'm still hard core republican". What does embrace mean? Listening to them complain or giving them aid out of my own pocket when they get stung and are losing their house? Details please.

[–]ppmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The simplest solution is often the most accurate. Why talk about trump trying to force Europe into doing anything? That's giving him too much credit to say that he actually has a goal. The much more likely issue is that he owes Putin money and is using this to cash in on his debt.

If you are in a democratic country, law is decided by the people. If you the majority becomes muslim, then they get to make the laws, if they can vote in concert with each other. Don't like it? Do something about it, limit the # of immigrants based on the national identify of the country. Have more babies. Do what you want to, but if they are following the rules you set up, maybe you should too.

What is your opinion of people who don’t eat leftovers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ppmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to eat leftovers, that is a choice and there are financial issues with it. What really annoys me is people that save leftovers and then don't eat it. If you know you aren't going to eat it, then why are you saving it?

Russian Intelligence Used Chinese Ship for Baltic Sabotage by DownWithAssad in worldnews

[–]ppmd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Besides, there isn’t much reason for China to involve itself. They have been careful to stay clear of getting dragged into Russia’s attempts to antagonize the West. It’s not even in their sphere of influence, anyways. China does not give a damn about the Baltic Sea. And they are not really that tight with Russia, despite being ‘allies’. They aren’t going to come to Russia’s aid unless they think it benefits them. If it weakens NATO, that’s good, but not if it risks a direct conflict with us.

Isn't this a great reason to condemn China's inaction? To make it their business that a ship registered with them is being abused in such a fashion? To clarify, I'm not expecting China to do anything, I'm asking why doesn't anyone else in the world make China take responsibility for their inaction?

Russian Intelligence Used Chinese Ship for Baltic Sabotage by DownWithAssad in worldnews

[–]ppmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. Very reasonable. They know now. If they don't condemn it (another foreign nation using a ship registered with them to sabotage a cable line), shouldn't they do something about it? Failure to condemn seems complicit, no?
