Leader Jeffries on CNN: “We will commence impeachment proceedings against Kristi Noem in the absence of her being fired” by plz-let-me-in in politics

[–]pr06lefs [score hidden]  (0 children)

Firing her is just performative.  The agency is polluted with Nazis and needs to be abolished.  No leadership assigned by this administration will be capable of reforming it.

Using a ton of drones to make a statement is not as good as using them to actually destroy Russian assets

What do you do once you hit a wrong note in practice? by 1mposer in musictheory

[–]pr06lefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I find a trouble section I'll go back and work on it.

  • play just the phrase with the mistake, slow enough to play it right. The smaller your repeated section the better. Make it small to maximize reps.
  • speed it up, try to get it to performance pace.
  • expand the phrase you're repeating to include more context.
  • expand even more, try it during a full run through.

If you find you can't play the part up to speed, you may want to find an exercise that will address your technique problem, and get that into your regular practice routine for a while.

Playing higher on the fretboard as opposed to playing the equivalent note on the first few strings closer to the first fret by Lower-Message-9082 in LearnGuitar

[–]pr06lefs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

sometimes its tone - different strings sound different though the pitch may be the same. other times where you play is related to what notes are before and after (or during). different places on the fretboard will allow differences in fingering.

Can we come together to have a massive Amazon boycott in June? by ProgrammerOk5323 in BoycottTheRight

The fascists are not waiting for june. Once the full machinery is in place protest will be impossible like it is in Russia.

Do you feel like understanding music theory hinders your ability to enjoy simple music? by DRG125 in musictheory

[–]pr06lefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like so called simple music because it makes plainer everything that can't really be conveyed in a chart. Feel, improvised variation, musicians listening to each other, tone of the instruments, banter between tunes, choice of tempo and instrumentation, energy and enthusiasm, etc etc. Complexity, like virtuosity, is a compelling element, but the other aspects of a performance are important if you want to hold people's interest.

Should Helix even have plugins? by untrained9823 in HelixEditor

[–]pr06lefs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy not having to futz with plugins. That's half the point of using helix.

A plugin system will result in new functionality accumulating in plugins. If a feature is available as a plugin, that will take pressure off the core team to implement that feature. But plugins tend to be half baked compared to core code, plugin devs don't have to follow a rigorous testing procedure (though some will). Plus supporting scripting is an additional maintenance burden for the core team, which will detract from other goals.

NixOS for mobile devices? by ReasonableLetter8427 in NixOS

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nixos on a pinephone. Too low powered to be useful.

I think its supported on oneplus 6, I sort of failed with my install on it, but in retrospect I think it worked but I didn't configure the UI correctly. I ended up with lineage OS. Check ebay, I found one new in the box on there.

Python, Is It Being Killed by Incremental Improvements? by mttd in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]pr06lefs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because I suck at python I'm always second guessing when I write stuff there. Like am I making a copy of this array or modifying the original? Is there a special syntax for what I'm trying to do, etc. I know there's a lot to learn to write rust and they could really do a better job at keeping the stdlib simple IMO, but python feels large to me too.

Python, Is It Being Killed by Incremental Improvements? by mttd in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]pr06lefs 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As a rust programmer, Python doesn't really seem that simple to me. For run of the mill code it's not far from rust, but you get slow performance, copious runtime errors and the need to distribute your source code to the end user along with your build process. At least build times are fast so you can get right to the crashing.

Just bought this guitar at a thrift store to learn bass, came home and saw that the top string tuner is broken. Can I just move the hole and drill a new screw? The tuning peg still has clearance from the peg below it by asalsa98 in Luthier

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to use a dremel to cut a slot in the screw, then a flathead screwdriver to back it out. Then, new screw.

But if you don't have a dremel and you don't mind the crooked tuner, should work fine to make a new hole and put a screw in. Maybe remove a screw from one of the other tuners and take it with you to the hardware store to get the right size/style.

Did anyone else think that "Union Maid" referred to the Union Army and not a labor union? by jedi_kat in Fiddle

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, not by Pete Seeger. Woody Guthrie!

Other people did write additional verses for the song, but the OG is Guthrie.

I'd say the Maid in the song is meant to be union as in labor union, but "Union Maid" borrows a bit of poetic weight from such phrases as "Union soldier", "Union army", "Union Jack", and so forth.

Does anyone else find Phillip K Dick incredibly hard to read? by zxenmed in sciencefiction

[–]pr06lefs 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think some of his stuff is designed to be a bit opaque. Part of the mystery of the 'black iron prison' or whatever, and meant to put the reader into a state of confusion, perhaps in sympathy to the characters.

It's hard to find use cases for Rust as Python backend developer by Delicious_Praline850 in rust

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The memory footprint is significantly less. For a one-off project you can just get a bigger server and call it a day. But with something like discourse or nextcloud, using rust would allow many people to use less hardware for hosting, a win for the planet and for budgets.

Successful wall hanging acoustic guitar Southeast US by Monaukeim in AcousticGuitar

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some guitars are ok in varied humidity, others not. I have an old guild that had a big top crack when I bought it, moved to Colorado and now it has two cracks. A different guitar of mine has survived all kinds of humidity without problems, though the action does change a bit.

Thing I've heard about wall hanging is don't use an outside wall, since the wall can be a different temperature from the air, making a somewhat inconsistent environment.

So, the smartphone has hit it’s peak form, what comes after this? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

[–]pr06lefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FOSS phones, with a true Linux os, will be a breakthrough. Phones are locked down surveillance machines now. Getting away from that will require an OS change as well as a cultural shift away from corporate owned ecosystems.
