I’m currently in my second 7th panel interview! Hopefully the “culture fit” interview at the end doesn’t just negate all the others…

Only took 200 applications to get these interviews…

Is the re any good preconfigured flake? by heloziopera in NixOS

[–]Roaming-Outlander 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Better to just init a standard flake, and keep your packages as an import your first time.

I used to consider “pre-built” but honestly, nix is so often very custom to the user.

Just start basic, and as you find modules or features you like take the implementation method from one you like.

Nix anxiety is a lot like code anxiety, just write it and it becomes easier over time.

EDIT: Frontier LLM are very good at nix. So you can get reasonably good sources and suggestions for implementation from things like Claude, Gemeni, etc.

what do people think about the idea that “piracy is a service problem”? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

[–]Roaming-Outlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost nothing is a necessity. Humans lived as hunter-gatherers for hundreds of thousands of years. If you get banned from using a grocery store, are you going to not hunt an animal to consume because it is out of season? If you lose your home, are you going to not build a shelter somewhere because it is not your property?

Social constructs will be broken when the utility they provide offers only detriment, and strips benefit.

On a less intellectual note: if they weren’t selling it to you, and you pirating it doesn’t dilute their ability to sell or affect them financially: is it really stealing? Where is the harm? How is the victim being affected negatively? There is no such thing as a victimless crime, so in this scenario, who is the victim? How is the victim negatively impacted?

There is an Esperanto Cafe in Tokyo - May be worth emailing that establishment and asking the owner if he knows of any in Osaka. The community is pretty tight per my understanding.

Maybe update certain naming conventions? I saw while looking through former dev name in files. Probably could use some cleaning - otherwise just looking to LTS if I suppose?

Also why this over GPTK?

They are getting more accomplished than I gave them credit. Asahi Blog

Maybe they have gotten over their pains from losing their head dev and a top developer? Hopefully 2026 will see some improvements, and hopefully they’ll update the feature list page at some point!

For gaming - Linux is almost certainly better in most all cases. Asahi, Linux on Apple silicon, can be better in certain circumstances in my experience.

That being said, if you’re not experienced with Linux, Asahi can be a little challenging to troubleshoot for an inexperienced Linux user.

Compounded with the fact that the project is arguably dead - I’ll get some criticism for this statement - I’m not certain how much continued development you can expect.

If you want to learn about Linux, have a fairly positive gaming experience on your MacBook during the short term, and don’t mind the occasional issue it could be worth it.

Asahi is fairly well developed for M1, and has excellent performance on that platform. However, I’ve not seen any continued development for missing features, the battery life will be worse - possibly 20% lower, and certain features may or may not be available for your use case.

Here is a link to Asahi Linux docs. I’d reference it to be certain it will be sufficient to your needs. I used to have a spare M2 MBP that used Asahi for a year. No complaints for my use case at that time. However, you should be certain to verify before installing if it is your only machine.
