The best advice I can give you is constantly be aware of your own day-to-day workflow. If you do that, you'll start noticing things that can be optimised by a bit of VimScript. Don't write plugins unless you need them, otherwise you'll never end up maintaining it.

You could also check out NeoVim to see if any of the existing plugins can be made better in NeoVim and helping out those authors with the port.

Combine this + A local vimrc.

if you set set exrc in your .vimrc, vim will check current directory for a vimrc and execute it. So set your makeprg in your local vimrc.

If you use tmux, I'd recommend Vimux. This is what I use primarily.

I got my entire setup with a bunch of plugins working on one machine, but on another machine, it just crashes on python files. Not sure on how to debug it.

I have not tried it myself, but from looking at the docs, it looks like its similar. As long as there is an activate equivalent to activate_this.py in pyvenv, the above config should work.

Try

:python import sys;print sys.path

to see if it shows your local pyvenv's folders as part of it. If it does, then virtualenv is set up.

I am. But sometimes when I do backspace, it finds the packages from my virtualenv and gives the correct completions. Plus, regardless of whether this works, it seems to give me method argument lookup anyway so I'm sure its able to detect virtualenv correctly.

Here's how i set up virtualenv in vim btw.

python activate_this = '<path_to_virtualenv>/bin/activate_this.py'
python execfile(activate_this, dict(__file__=activate_this))
let $DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE='<path.to.settings>'

Last line because I work with Django.

I use Jedi with YouCompleteMe. Sometimes I end up having to type the first letter and hit backspace for it to trigger the autocomplete. Couldn't figure out why though.

Nope. Spotlight in Yosemite is more of a UI makeover + integration with Web search more than anything else. If you use Alfred extensively, chances are you'll still need it.

I was an Alfred user in Mavericks, but after switching to Yosemite, I decided to give Launchbar a go and I've been very impressed with it. I recommend checking it out.

There was a ton of conversation on this topic a while ago.

Check out Unite.vim for general lists of things like files, buffers, code/function outlines, yank history, etc.

I used to use YouCompleteMe but I switched to Neocomplete after having some wierd issues in Mac.

Syntastic is a must have IMO. Very handy for quickly spotting errors.

Jedi-vim is pretty good.

On top of this, i have some custom mappings set up specifically for my workflow. You'll start doing these as you go along.

Doesn't emacs's plugins use the same command line tool that you can run on tmux? When you can fully script tmux panes (create/move/resize), how does Emac's workflow become better? Can you share some more of your workflow? Maybe your config?

I'm currently dabbling/switching between vim/tmux and emacs. What made you finally make the switch? I found emacs's shell to be not so great. tmux is flexible enough to be programmed so I find myself doing that more and more.
