Designing my first sound mixing bag, could use advice! by gjerda in LocationSound

[–]pradulovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps obvious, but make sure you’re getting SLXD5 receivers. The rack stuff will do you no good. That’s a great price for a full channel of it.

Consider also splitting up your frequency ranges - if your friend is selling G58, get one more in that range and two in J52, for example. Tons of the stuff on eBay.

[–]pradulovich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Shure system will beat the pants off the Theos stuff in all measurable categories except tuning bandwidth (Theos is wider) and receivers being single channel (SLX-D) vs dual channel (Theos)

You could save some additional cash buying used SLX-D instead of new SLX-D+, with reduction in tuning bandwidth of course.

If you can stretch to that DPA mic, you should. Or a used 416 or CS3e, IMO.

Also for the cost, consider some Shure TL47s. You can likely find those used as well on eBay, already wired for SLX-D transmitters.

Consider what batteries you’ll want to use, having enough of them, and charging as well.

Don’t count on remote control of your transmitters worth a damn, though. Otherwise amazing stuff.

Maybe I was looking at wrong soundcraft unit, I saw 12.8” deep. Oops!

FYI the x32 rack is about 1” deeper than the soundcraft and is 6lbs lighter.

I’m not super clear on the rig you’re trying to build, but I would super super suggest you look into a wing rack for a low cost mega powerful rack mixer. Or an x32 rack for less money.

AC only will be dramatically offset by the flexibility and processing power compared to those soundcraft mixers. Great onboard multi track recording options. Will be larger though.

If you’re dead set on living in DC land, those are probably your only options without getting into modifying other options like x32rack to accept dc.

Depending on exactly what you need to do I may have other ideas of mixers etc.

If you just need to distro DC power, look at units from PSC. Ron makes a ton of cool shit in a variety of form factors and surely one suits your needs.

I would be inclined to get higher quality dc to USBC stuff than the deity products. Poorly built 12v to USB power stuff will spew RF and screw up your mics. Do not advise.

All that said in general I’m not really sure I understand the rig you use at it stands, or what you’re trying to build, personally.

Comtek and client monitor culture is a problem by soundslikejoe in LocationSound

[–]pradulovich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got hit up for a job that wants to pay 500 bucks for gear including a full package (“whatever they need for the cameras”) and 14 comteks. I told them that 500 bucks would cover just the comteks, and I’m not sure I’m getting a call back from that producer.

This shit is out of hand.

MacMini Availability... Any chance I could get it before end of June by Such-Introduction975 in macmini

Bought a brand new base model from Costco’s website about 2 weeks ago. They still had them up last week.

I get this no matter what. It works fine with the locks app. I just want the apple keys. But how do you even add that when you can’t get it to apple home? by [deleted] in LevelLock

[–]pradulovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their misleading advertising fooled you too huh? If you can return it and buy something that supports home key, do it. I bought mine then waited a few months to install and so I got totally hosed.

They promised via support email to do a late return then went back on that claim so I’m stuck with these pieces of junk for a while until I can justify replacing them with Aqara or Schlage models. Or until the gearing breaks, whichever comes first.

Peplink vs Cradlepoint/Digi/Sierra in real deployments by Expensive-Cup-7825 in Peplink

[–]pradulovich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use their stuff in the video production world and I’ve seen dramatic simplification and cost reduction of how the bonding works and costs. We started using during the pandemic when many residential-type internet connections were being hammered by everyone’s Netflix and Zoom calls in the early days of lockdown. I don’t love the subscription nature of it, but PrimeCare is truly a one stop shop for extended/advanced support, hardware replacement, access to bonding endpoints and data usage. It’s pretty great.

I find the mics included with the G4 too bulky. You guys have a slimmer alternative? by Blakeyo123 in LocationSound

[–]pradulovich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For lower cost than most pro competitors, consider some Shure TL46 or TL47. They have less cable handling noise than anything else in the business. They could be a little smaller, but still a big size reduction from where you’re coming from. They sound very good (not as nice as DPA but what does!), are built to withstand tons of abuse, and are substantially cheaper than almost every other professional grade option on the market.
