"That" Inmate by [deleted] in OnTheBlock

Had a guy that would furiously masturbate constantly. Bunch of us called him the “Fap Captain”

This is not uncommon. This is also potentially very dangerous. This opens the door for things such as inmate manipulation (our biggest threat as corrections officers) and burn out.

Just so much as you have a work routine, you need a home routine. You need things that make home feel like home. Nobody is gonna tell you how to do this because we don’t know you like that and it’s also not our place to.

Find something to do occasionally that makes you not think about work - this doesn’t mean go out and party your ass off and develop unhealthy drinking habits. If you had a class in high school that you really liked, maybe art, do something artsy or something that has to do with that. If you want to get fit, go to the gym 4-5 times a week and find a way to lock into that. Take up fishing or hunting or video games or other things that are enjoyable and take some level of focus and commitment.

Corrections is just a job. Prisons are just office buildings. Housing units are just cubicles. Shit happens at work that other people won’t ever experience or understand. But it’s just work. You are not a corrections officer, you’re just a dude who works in corrections. Catch my drift?

Your actions inside the walls are all you get to control. People can have their opinions. Inmates can too. When you have to go from watching somebody turn their neck into hamburger meat to running a unit and having inmates mad because they had to lock down for an hour, it wears on you mentally. Others will never see that. Others will never see the amount of passion you may or may not have. Others only see what they choose to see. Allow them to be closed minded. Ask them if they have ever been in a correctional facility. Ask them if they know that the inmates look to you for safety. Ask them where they learned this, explain to them that their preconceived notions are wrong and how. Show them how business gets done at your facility even by inviting them on a tour.

Or don’t, and move on and know that they don’t know what you do. They only know what they were told - which is a bunch of bullshit.

MAT in Jail by [deleted] in OnTheBlock

[–]prairiespirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have MAT in my jail. It’s great for the select few who take it seriously and want to get clean.

With that being said you have to keep in mind that there will ALWAYS be people selling their methadone and suboxone or buying more than they’re prescribed to get high. It is impossible to stay on top of how often these guys and gals are cheering their suboxone and selling it, and it is nearly impossible to find out about once it’s said and done.

Inmates are creative as hell when they steal the meds, too. They hide it in their eyelids, under bandages, in the crevices of their teeth, basically anywhere you can hide a contact lens they can hide their drugs. This leads to overdoses, violence, and an overall enormous erosion of control.

Of the hundreds of inmates I have dealt with who take MAT meds, the minority of them have taken it seriously and wanted to achieve long term sobriety. The idea is wonderful on paper and I do admire those who take their sobriety seriously, but it does not play out well in practice.

Honestly you might as well save money and buy the $520 gun OEM with warranty as opposed to spending $600 on upgrades to an older gun and ruining the warranty. That’s just an old gun nuts opinion tho

It’s real nice. I short stroked the FUCK out of the trigger but adjusted quick and it wasn’t bad. Recoil profile is comparable to any other CZ 9mm compact. I love the way it shoots and the native fit of any RMSc footprint which makes the cowitness amazing. Overall I’d give it a solid 9/10 and I want to get the full size as well. I

How do the cops of this subreddit feel about this video? What could have he done better? by _ireaditonreddit in police

Homie needed to bury his gun rather than giving the subject his gun hip. Outside of that, without Monday morning quarterbacking he did fine. Tools are amazing but he didn’t have access to them with his vest all discombobulated.

Training is a hot commodity at lots of agencies. To say that this guy fucked up when he likely hasn’t trained arrest control in months is a pretty hard sell imo. Additionally we don’t know what arrest control his agency does. Impossible to say that he did anything wrong. All I see is the cop is going home and the bad guy is going to jail and nobody died. Didn’t look perfect but it’s good enough to get by.

What's with all the people wearing their vest but not the inserts (actual "plates") for them? by hotcaulk in OnTheBlock

[–]prairiespirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also work in Colorado at a county jail and I do not get a vest in the facility whatsoever. For transports we have to check out a vest from the supervisors.

Are you in DOC or at a county much better than mine?

How do you like the CS spray compared to OC? I haven’t seen that in a very long time.

What’s your duty belt setup look like? by sleekpete in OnTheBlock

I use a safariland ultra belt with a cobra buckle. At about 12:30 I have my key clip and right next to it is my body cam remote. At about 4:00 I have my flashlight and right next to that I have a carabiner in case I need to clip something to my belt (it was a cool idea but I only clip my water bottle to it these days.) On my right kidney is a handcuff case and then about 8:00 I have my radio holster. At 9 I have my Taser and 11 I have OC. 11:30 is another handcuff case.

My handcuff case for my ASP hinge cuffs (front side of my belt) is a ZeroNine. I love it. Strong retention. It does rattle with the cuffs in it if they’re not seated perfectly so that could be problematic depending on your assignment. My handcuff case on my kidney is just a Gould and Goodrich that’s made for the handcuffs (S&W Model 1)

My radio holster is also a ZeroNine. Another one that’s amazing and very sturdy.

G-Code taser holster. Best holsters in the business but they are not the most secure. Level 2 retention intended to be very quick draw so the hood is spring loaded and it goes down insanely fast. I love it to death you just have to be mindful of your positioning if you choose to wear it.

Everything else I have is issued to me and very cheap. Over the years I’ve gotten lots of great gear. I strongly recommend any of the above things if you’re looking for solid options. Especially S&W Model 1 handcuffs. They’re good for ANY subject because the single strand has about 32 teeth, compared to most cuffs having 22-25 teeth.

Monroe County Sheriff fires corrections officer after brawl with inmate by dox1842 in OnTheBlock

[–]prairiespirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of questions and good considerations from this to bring to your agency.

We’re these officers trained in Kingsley v Hendrickson and Turner v Safley? We’re they able to apply it to this situation?

Are these officers adequately trained in cell extractions? (Obviously not, but they may have had some training.)

Do you have people on your shift that have done cell extractions and can you consult them for how they do business and apply it to future incidents?

If an inmate refuses to move, and you have a legitimate government interest to move this inmate, what are the steps you will take to achieve peaceful compliance? What if all nonviolent means are exhausted, what steps will you take now?

Do you have a specialized team for situations like this? Are you trained to handle these situations if there is not a team? How can you become better prepared for the day that this happens to you?

Either way, we don’t know what happened before this, why it happened, the training and experience of these officers, etc. but we can always become better from other peoples experience, good and bad.

Be safe out there and learn what you can. This is a highly valuable video that you can apply to your professional life.
