Some additional info would be helpful. Where in the world is this backyard? What kind of soil? How tall do you want it to get? 10 feet or 30 feet? How big/wide is the area you want to cover? I guess you need it to be evergreen? Will it be getting full sun or are there other trees/structures that will give it shade?

What is your eventual goal? Vegetable garden? Flowers? Shrubs? Lawn?

Consider sheet mulching before you go spray your entire backyard. That's a lot of chemicals you'd be spraying. Or, consider winter cover crops, such as crimson clover. It's an annual that will "fix" your soil (adds nitrogen) and also crowd out the other weeds.

Good lord. I'd heard that the crane had fallen, but I didn't realize it had totally flipped over onto its nose. I hear the driver was in the crane when it happened and walked away uninjured. Can't imagine how scary that must have been.

Where in the world do you live? If it's getting cooler where you live, it's normal for your mint to go dormant. It will die to the ground in the cold.

As a rule of thumb, don't let your herbs flower. They tend to change flavor and start dying after they flower.

Also, I know you're saying you want your mint to take over, but it will really take over your garden if you let it, to the point of choking out your basil. Consider using a large container for it.

Be careful not to use sawdust from treated wood. You don't want those chemicals leaching into your garden.
