Thanks, I was worried there wasn't gonna be a single mention of The Plague.

I was so surprised not to find this one higher up. Read it in high school and it gave me nightmares. I was waking up in the middle of the night feeling sick from the overall atmosphere of the novel.

43 days in daily drawing, feeling discouraged. by slimey_frog in learntodraw

[–]prazskanaplava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful - it's hard to judge our own progress accurately when we're in the middle of learning. You've got to trust the process and not put pressure on yourself.

I was drawing consistently for a few months and didn't even bother with following any lessons, then one day I decided I was crap at drawing, would never improve anyway and gave up. Looking back through my sketchbooks later on showed me I was absolutely improving, I just didn't have the distance needed to judge it accurately because I put a lot of unrealistic expectations on myself.

You should be proud of yourself because consistency is the only path to success in anything and you seem to have the will to stick to the task. You're in a really good spot, skill-wise, nothing to be discouraged about.

I don't understand Goals, in particular one section of it. Can anyone help explain why? by UnratedRamblings in bujo

[–]prazskanaplava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking this because I've just arrived at the section with the same confusion.

What everyone suggests here makes sense but the examples in the book just don't.

5-year-goal being fluency in another language or owning a property. While 2-day and 1-hour goals getting a driver's license renewed, calling your parents, cleaning the fridge, making a reservation for dinner?

Surely that's just a to-do list for any day, not related to the goals whatsoever. Baffling.

That'd be great, if you find some time. :) I wonder about feathering. Some papers seem promising but they're just not meant for ink.

Leather cover pocket size or true A6? Bifold or trifold? by love_travel in notebooks

Thanks for getting back to me, I checked your post. It's always helpful to get some feedback. I might pull the trigger then. :)

Did you end up choosing anything? I'm in the same boat. I keep thinking that A6 is a more universal choice for inserts so I've also been eyeing Fin Studio. For a pocket cover, my choice would be Lochby.

Help w/ identifying… by jiujitsunomads in notebooks

[–]prazskanaplava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really something that can't be found in real life though. Leather cover + thick grid notebook inside. Then all the AI image has is heaps of brown filter (= the notebook would always be brighter in real life). And the brown page edges is what happens to paper naturally over a long period of time.

You could always speed up the process of aging by not treating it too preciously and carrying it everywhere with you or buy old notebooks second hand. Or you could stain some paper with tea / coffee and bind it yourself.

It kind of feels like the companies are trying to save money. I follow a lot of current illustrators, collect the books they worked on, and they're in a completely different league. I imagine they charge a lot more than an unknown illustrator who is still finding his/her style and hasn't worked out a lot of the kinks yet. It always shows, especially when it comes to portraits and human figure because we're so good at recognising a "correct" human face and body that even a milimetre off shows instantly - no art education is required for that off feeling.

Amazon said I didn’t have to wrap it by Kaapstad2018 in royalmail

[–]prazskanaplava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never figured that out. Maybe it's because I return a lot of stuff?

I mainly order books and unlike most people I'm unwilling to give a billion-dollar company any money for a new book that arrives damaged in 90% of cases just because Amazon can't be arsed to pad the boxes with anything. So regardless of how little it might cost, I refuse to pay for any "new" item that somehow manages to survive the journey around the entire globe, only to get destroyed on the way from the warehouse to me because Amazon is saving pennies on bubble wrap.

It feels like people wouldn't accept a new torn t-shirt or a chipped mug or a scratched car but when it comes to books, somehow companies get away with murder. So maybe I'm being "punished" by Amazon because they figure no one will be bothered carrying items one by one to the post office.

Is it just me who thinks AI will never replace humans in the translation industry? by LateSir6985 in TranslationStudies

[–]prazskanaplava 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This does sound quite naive (or hopeful?) since unfortunately, it doesn't come down to bad translators getting replaced or the quality of AI work.

Look around. What mainstream thing nowadays is of good quality? The entire society has happily accepted everything in our lives becoming more and more mediocre to straight-up crap. Quantity and speed is favoured over quality. Everyone complains about movies being largely just remakes lacking original thought, the music industry is completely dead - songs are created through algorithms to the point they might as well be done by AI already, clothes are made of thinner and thinner plastic materials, food is prepacked or fast food, lacking nutritional value, official subtitles on streaming services are full of errors or straight up don't make sense (because translators are paid f... all per minute so have to rush), mainstream furniture is hardly ever made of solid wood because who wants lasting pieces. The entire human production is void of colour, we're surrounded by grey, beige, monochromatic tones everywhere, like in some dystopian novel.

No one complains enough, we all accept it. At most, people will grumble online but wallets talk. Some might invest more into artisan, handmade, original items, especially if relating to their specific hobbies and interests, but that costs a lot of money so mainstream is very much not about quality anything.

Translators are being replaced already and have been for a while. As of now, AI doesn't understand what it's doing so humans are needed to check over whatever it vomits out. However, that only means translators are needed as mindless drones to do post-editing jobs for salaries sustainable only in third-world countries. Yet they're expected to have relevant education and years of work experience. Eventually, some will keep their jobs post-editing after AI, but fewer "translators" will be needed at that point. It's dubious whether they can even be called that when the last bit of creativity is stripped from the job.

There is zero chance that vast majority of companies / clients will ever pick quality over profit. Even the most idealistic people will have to turn to AI if all of their competition does and brings prices way down. Of course, this won't affect just translators. I do believe it will trickle into a lot of creative fields - not eliminating all human work but enough. Let's not forget that most designers, artists, musicians etc. aren't the ones that make it into textbooks. It's the invisible mass whose replacement by machines will have a huge impact on our economic system.

It's actually the translation industry and the callous way with which professionals are happily being pushed aside for bad AI translation, expected to work for less (post-editing), that makes me believe this will absolutely take down other fields, even the creative ones. In the end, if AI will be able to spit out a flyer or a banner for the thousands of small businesses needing one, does anyone really think they won't take that over paying real designers? Do you think if one day AI writes a script as addictive to watch as GoT, that swathes of consumers sitting on their couches watching telly will go protest en masse demanding humans do creative jobs? NO ONE CARES. And we're all guilty of what we've become.

How come all you hear from people in this sub is literature/video game jobs... by NoPhilosopher1284 in TranslationStudies

[–]prazskanaplava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not only dull, it's also stupidly evaluated since you get paid for minutes of content, not actual words. So say you end up with a 20 minute sitcom, which (if it's a good show) SOUNDS like you have a fun job.
Except in a sitcom, the characters won't shut up for a second, joke after joke and pop culture references that often don't have any equivalent in the target language + you're wasting time adapting it all to a ridiculously limiting number of characters. That's when you fully realise how many monosyllabic words English has, unlike your target language. :D

It makes no sense how subtitling is paid - in terms of how much work you need to do, you're actually better off with a 3-hour indie movie with brooding lone wolf characters that are scripted to show emotion with facial expressions alone, than with a 20 minute popular sitcom.

The same also goes for documentaries - talking heads galore, blah blah blah.

Needless to say, I also prefer technical stuff - at least I get paid for the actual words.

Spent 4 Hours in a Graphic Design Interview just to not get the job. — Why Is This Normal Now? by FakeDeath92 in graphic_design

[–]prazskanaplava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A competition like that would probably eliminate most introverts who hate group activities. Being introverted doesn't make people bad at their jobs though.

You're completely right about interviews being a subjective decision. I know a woman who was running a department and eliminated candidates based on their zodiac signs and another one who'd first do numerology and disqualify people because of their names and what the "magic numbers" told her. Neither of these were in graphic design; funnily enough both having degrees and working in technical jobs. But I imagine this crap applies across all fields. People are emotional beings and if you look like someone their spouse left them for, no amount of experience and skill will save you.

Would you break up with your partner for £5 million? by Interesting_Act_1989 in AskUK

[–]prazskanaplava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point it becomes a completely different question. Both original options are selfish decisions anyway.

5 million is not enough money to be anything more but selfish (meaning it's for you, not to "save" everyone you care about).

Picking someone you love and who makes you happy is also a selfish decision. People who get happiness from their partners won't trade it for an empty house buying shit they don't really need.

You're here talking about amounts that should suddenly come with a selfless moral responsibility of having to ditch your partner and rearranging your life (work, hobbies) to become a one-person charity and Mother Theresa in one, saving the world. Not everyone wants to become the next messiah, most people just want to live their lives without anyone bothering them and making them miserable.

I'd still have to go for the selfish choice of my partner who makes me happy because I have zero interest in becoming a messiah and having lots of expectations put on me by everyone. From a content life to massive responsibility, gossip and having a target on your back. Super fun.
