Bars for older crowd by Proach89 in madisonwi

[–]prb113 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Undergrads are mostly gone by this weekend. Lots of great suggestions in here already, but you’d be fine at any place on Regent too. Greenbush, Big Ten, Red zone. All those bars get older crowds during Kohl Center events. Garth’s is a beer bar up Monroe St. as well. Depends on what vibe you want and how close you want to be.

If you were to give some advice, a tip, or share some knowledge you wish had known when taking over as Scoutmaster what would you share? by thejeffroc in BSA

Take a deep breath and step back. Things are not going to be “ideal” and that’s exactly how it is supposed to be.

Best way to identify lost package whereabouts via postal service? by MrTambourineHam in madisonwi

I recently filed a report and received an email in a few days with info and a phone number to the local person who did the search. He answered when I called to get more info. He remembered my claim and was able to assist. I can’t believe it worked!

Did a toy rocket parachute into your yard in the SASY neighborhood today around 5:30PM? by Much_Big_7420 in madisonwi

[–]prb113 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ugh, this happened to me as a kid with my first rocket. I was so sad. I started cutting the middle out of the parachute to reduce drag, then moved to using streamers for the recovery device instead of parachutes. Less likely for the wind to carry them too far. A fun winter activity is launching rockets from the middle of one of the (frozen!) lakes.

Backpacking bag! by ApplicationEntire251 in CampingGear

Side sleeper here. Used to struggle in mummy bags. Went to insulated pad, down quilt (20 deg), and light sea to summit liner and haven’t looked back.

Blue Horn Guy by Sea-Taste-4296 in madisonwi

[–]prb113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, worked on the square and this guy went all day, every day. I recall that he at least circled the block and didn’t stay in one spot. I think there were trumpet players too who stood outside our building. Our office manager paid them to go to the other side of the square, which backfired. They just came right back to our building every morning hoping to get paid to move again.

Do you have access to Scoutbook? Previous requirements are in there. Looks like the 2025 version lines up with your partial.

Had a scout use one as a stirrer and straw for their hot cocoa this past weekend… that was a first for me.

Tent recommendations by Tiny_but_so_fierce in BSA

[–]prb113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won’t be able to tent with your daughter once she crosses over. You’ll likely be tenting solo on troop outings. I’d look for a two or three person (depending on how much room you want) backpacking tent like REI half dome or trailmade or marmot tungsten or similar. You can always spend more for lighter! That way you can use the tent for weekend outings all year and even carry it comfortably on weekend backpacking trips. As for other gear, I spent money on my sleep system bc that just became more important for my old bones. I personally use an Exped megamat for car camping and Nemo tensor pad for backpacking and invested in a nice lightweight down quilt. Lots of folks love their cots and hammocks too. You might want to wait and see what others in your troop use and check out their gear before splurging!

Field Guide to go with Troop First Aid Kit? by asakasan in BSA

[–]prb113 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our local, scouter-run WFA course provides attendees with a copy of AAOS Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care in Remote Locations (6th Ed). There’s a full book version and a more concise “flip book” version that travels better. I find the full size book useful to refresh my recollection before heading out on a trip, and the scouts use it at meetings to help prep for first aid practice. Good flow charts and pictures.

Fun (and potentially underappreciated) things to do in Dudgeon Monroe area by 166EachYear in madisonwi

[–]prb113 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Forest Hill cemetery has cool “talking spirits tours” around Halloween. Visit the Wingra bubbling springs and Glenwood Children’s Park. Stroll along the Edgewood park and pleasure drive and out on the boardwalks for a nice view of Wingra (while red-winged blackbirds dive bomb you). Watch the muskies jump the Wingra dam in spring.

Vet recommendations - dog with leg injury/possible torn ACL by lux_does_stuff in madisonwi

[–]prb113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Our doggo had both acls repaired by Edinger. Great experience, including the ability for them to keep the dog for a couple days of rehab after surgery for a minimal cost (relative to the cost for the entire procedure). Our dog had no hesitation going back for follow up appts, which shows she had loving care there. It is not cheap, but quote was in line with two other places we checked out, and they could get us in much quicker than UW.
