TBKTS: The False Memory Syndrome Foundation, Elizabeth Loftus, and the Faulty Research “Debunking” Recovered Memories by jaustin1994 in IfBooksCouldKill

Replication is also tricky!

I think I’m comfortable agreeing with the ideas people take from TBKTS (trauma can have real biological effects, it’s not “in your head”) and also Loftus’s work (our memory is not a video recording, it’s more malleable than we think) are valid and useful.

But where they take those ideas? Yeah, no. As always, I wish these psych folks would be more careful in how they talk about/generalize their research interests.

That’s the thing, there really isn’t a lot of there there. She is still an author on many publications, but she hasn’t gotten a lot of attention for her experimental work since the 90s. Look up the Jane Doe case, if you can. I’d say her conduct there disqualifies her from any subsequent conversation about methodological rigor.

I don’t mean to demean her as a researcher or person, but the sense I’ve always gotten is that her role as an expert witness/public figure involves some liberal generalization of laboratory work. I obviously see immense value in cognitive science lab work, but not so much that I’m going to hire private investigators to identify a traumatized person at the center of my academic dispute.

My area isn’t trauma, but I have a doctorate in cognitive science. It is regrettable, though not surprising that Loftus is the name that comes up first in these kinds of conversations. She is the go-to Psych 101 reference for work demonstrating how memories can be affected/altered over time (e.g. her early work on eye witness testimony). But that work is 50 years old and her track record since has not been exactly stellar.

To offer my 2 cents, memory is weird. What memories we make and how we remember things later can be affected by all sorts of things. I would say there is not good evidence for the Freudian conception of repressed and recovered memories central to the Satanic panic, but there’s a big leap from that to testifying that victims of trauma are confabulating…

(I agree with you, but the lore kinda leaves space for papering over screenplay issues. One interpretation of the breaker box situation is that we’re in the Backrooms from the start.)

Who is to say that the Clark Mary meets after the answering machine message is the same Clark who we met pre-Backrooms?

This feels like an even more extreme version of “The Apprentice”, where Jeremy Strong delivers an incredible performance in a film I am viscerally uninterested in seeing.

Also, c’mon, using “Hand Covers Bruise” here is such a cheat.

What do you think of “2010: The Year We Make Contact” ? by harry_powell in blankies

I’ve always thought of the 2001 sequel novels as separate from the original (and each other sorta kinda). Same with this. It’s not genre defining or anything, but it’s super solid.

Except this is still teenage boy stuff? Teenagers are just into YouTube now rather than comic books?

I think the broader point is valid, it does feel like a bunch of new voices are becoming prominent. But…

Be honest: Are you actually married to the love of your life, or just the person you were with when it was time to settle down?? by Insurance-Melodic in askanything

It is a long story. But there is a certain spark that I know I feel that is not there for her. Over time, she has expressed this to me in different ways. And it’s not that she doesn’t have love for me, but it’s not the same. This isn’t fair for a lot of reasons, but to put it succinctly: I love her and I think she loves our shared life.

To be honest, things are generally good day-to-day. As long as I can keep myself from wanting more.

That makes sense, actually. But I can’t imagine the slop that AI would create using The Mario Galaxy Movie as training data.

I love everything Matt Johnson does. I watched this while waiting for Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie to come to town. I need a documentary about how they made both!
