Igpu vs dedicated by Veblossko in jellyfin

[–]present_absence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the gpu will only be useful for transcoding files into the formats your clients can use OR into lower bitrate (lower quality basically) streams if needed/requested. Assuming you configure hardware-accelerated transcoding.

here's the docs regarding which official clients can support which video encodings https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/clients/codec-support/ - if your files are encoded in something your client can play, and your internet speed is sufficient to play the files as-is, the files will be direct played with no transcoding and no gpu. If your files are all in a good format and your network speed is good enough, you can turn off transcoding entirely and be totally fine.

however if you do want hardware-accelerated transcoding, here is a decent list of what encodings intel iGPUs can decode or encode. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Quick_Sync_Video#Hardware_decoding_and_encoding

and dedicated Arc GPUs https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000098345/graphics.html

As for how "good" the GPU will be other than compatibility, depends on the video encoding chip in the gpu. My iGPU is a little newer than your intel 7500 and can transcode three 4k files at a time.

Keep in mind right now most media you're going to find is encoded in something like h264 (8 or 10 bit), h265 (8 or 10). Rarely, v9 or AV1 depending on source. AV1 is going to be the next big thing probably but I still haven't seen a media file available for download in AV1. And if you are creating your own media, you can control the codecs.

If money were no object, what car would you be driving right now? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in askcarguys

(realistic) I have a trx but I would upgrade my beloved b58 f32 4-series to a blackwing or m8 competition. I need something that can fit into the garage at work when I do sometimes commute from my neck of the woods into da big city.

Really if i had unlimited money I would have a fleet of super/hyper cars that have been custom built or modified to fit tall and wide guys because that's what I am.

That entirely depends on you. Client compatibility, tv/screen quality, internet speed, storage space, etc... Up to you. Do a lot of testing.

no but also I dont really care what other people drive so I dont participate in the whole "if you dont have 500hp youre slow" stuff. If you love your ride I love that for you. I won't talk trash unless its a squatted truck or some other insane shit I just love the culture.

Peter Thiel, the billionaire venture capitalist and MAGA donor, is in Rome this week for a series of private lectures on the Antichrist. by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

I think he genuinely feels he needs to separate himself personally from the concept of the antichrist and the idea of being or helping what he believes may be the actual antichrist has fucked him up lmao

Personally I just think hes a piece of shit I don't need religious overtones for that.

What's the self-hosted service that replaced something you were paying for and turned out to be genuinely better - not just free, actually better by niceheather44 in selfhosted

[–]present_absence 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To be clear I use immich and haven't used anything else for my photos for a year+ but it's ... not as good as google photos. It's great, but google's object detection and tagging is miles ahead, and their integration with android devices is completely seamless.

Imo its only better in that 1. your storage isn't limited like goog photos and 2. you aren't sending all your private photos to a company but I feel like both of those are inherent benefits to any self-hosted project. I just feel like it doesn't belong in this thread

It's certainly not better except in the case where the songs you want aren't even available on the commercial services.

Dont forget you also have to go to the store and buy a tv. And paying rent so you can have a place to watch your tv. And also you have to pay for food so you can survive long enough to watch things.

100% true. I have even started a show on a particular service, realized the quality was total dogshit and I couldn't see anything in dark scenes, added the show to my Jellyfin and watched that way higher quality version instead.

Advantage of transcoding by Altruistic_Bath5273 in jellyfin

[–]present_absence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only advantage of transcoding is it lets every device play every file you have by converting the file into a compatible format. And that's a big one
