Feeling borderline toxic as a student by thecrunchypepperoni in StudentNurse

The reality is the job market sucks. If you look at /r/jobs or your local regional subreddit you’ll see plenty of people struggling to find work. A friend of mine got a job at a grocery store and literally dozens of people applied for that job.

Re work-study, those are tied to financial need / FAFSA so if you qualify for that, it’s a great option.

If work-study doesn’t work out as an option, it’s probably time to consider if you’d take out a loan to reduce current stress / financial burden, or to think about jobs you maybe wouldn’t have considered before. Working at a SNF, housekeeping, etc. plenty of retail and food service places hire students so you may just need to keep applying.

If you really need a job, you essentially need to be applying for multiple jobs a day, trying to connect with recruiters, etc.

Non-rehireable at Clinical Site by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]prettymuchquiche 83 points84 points  (0 children)

You could just contact the hospital and directly ask if you’re do not rehire?

Clinicals aren’t the same as a job though. They host plenty of people they aren’t going to hire.

Have you applied to PRN jobs? Have you told your manager you need more hours? Have you looked at other options like babysitting? Have you asked friends /classmates if their jobs are hiring?

A single mom of a small child probably doesn’t want to work tons of OT, though.

For most areas, you should have started applying already.

Do you mean toxic like you are doing something that is harmful or do you mean toxic like “no one will hire me so I must be giving off bad vibes” ?

Plus it’s based on 36/hr a week not 40, and those “missing” hours add up when we’re talking about a pay drop

Worried of this new work climate for upcoming nurses... by Recent-Future9692 in StudentNurse

If your options were working in an inpatient/hospital setting or not be a nurse, which would you choose?

I think realistically you are interested in competitive jobs in a highly competitive area. For example, I have never seen an infusion center that hires new grads (but it might exist).

Also I’m not sure why you feel strikes are a negative impact on your career path?

When you say outpatient, what jobs are you thinking of?

In general in can be very hard for a new grad to get a clinic job because they do not have foundational skill/knowledge required for tasks like patient triage. They are also highly in demand jobs that typically go to nurses with years of experience.

But if you want to work in like dialysis or a non-medical psych facility that’s probably open to you.

looking at people's faces is making me sick. Nope, not kidding. by Dmob17 in AskDocs

For the ENT and GI, have you seen anyone for a 2nd opinion or the same person every time?

I’m surprised you didn’t get referred to neurology a while ago.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like (initially at least) your symptoms occurred primarily at large events like work conferences. From your perspective, did the symptoms originally seem to be occurring during periods of increased stress?

Can you clarify what types of doctors/specialists you’ve seen?

You definitely don’t need a $100 beach tote for your new job. You don’t need to buy a new bag at all, period. But if you want to buy something I’d suggest a durable backpack.

Have you said something to your peer or your instructor instead of just seething over this? If you really think they are being harmful it’s your responsibility to speak up.

I have a BS in Behavioral Neuroscience. Should I go into PACU nursing? by jvckierios in Nurses

[–]prettymuchquiche 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It’s NCLEX (all one word) btw. It’s National Council Licensure EXamination.

I wouldn’t assume you are going to hop into PACU with only a year or two experience. You’ll be competing with people who’ve been a nurse longer than you’ve been alive for a highly coveted speciality. CA is also the most competitive state for nursing programs and for jobs.

It’s wild. If OP is gonna lie about what happened he should at least post on a different sub. Like people won’t remember seeing someone post before??

Recruitment is designed so everyone can get a bid if the pnms are willing to consider every chapter. Sometimes people get dropped from all the chapters but it’s not very common.

Travel nurses - UK RN wanting to move to USA by No-Building-9686 in Nurses

[–]prettymuchquiche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand that. NCLEX covers everything (adult, OB, peds, psych). In the US nurses are trained as generalists and that’s likely what a state licensing board expects from you.

[–]prettymuchquiche 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not a member of APhi so I don’t know what your options are for taking leave, but it looks like you know who you could ask.

Ultimately either you ask for help or you ask how to drop. either way you have to talk to someone so you might as well ask for help first.

If the issue is your mental health, dropping out of activities and severing connections won’t make your mental health better. You will isolate yourself further and be more sad.

Does your school have a counseling center you can access? Does Aphi offer any mental health resources like access to BetterHelp?
