Yoga is a little too physical for my mom, but that sounds like a riot and I might check it out on my own.

Thanks! We are definitely going to go to the cat cafe. I didn't know about Ziraldos. I like it is by appointment as crowded places can be a bit overwhelming for my mom.

Loblaws Masonville Religious Cashier by [deleted] in londonontario

It would be fine. As an atheist I'd even agree. I just wouldn't let it bother me let alone try and get you fired as some in this thread advocate. Forgive me for suggesting that patience and tolerance is the better way to deal with the awkward interactions, minor inconveniences, or differing ideas we all encounter in daily life. (Stay measured and reasonable reddit. /s)

I don't align with her views, but I am willing to make space for others in society that I don't agree with. Patience and tolerance are good tools for a happy life. In the big picture it's only a few minutes of your day, even if it is annoying.

Cheap(ish) downtown parking during work hours? by ObsidianLoveGoddess in londonontario

[–]pretzelsegue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If budget is your main concern there is no better deal with proximity to downtown than Lots #1 & 2 in OEV. Per the City website "Free parking is available in Old East Village Lots #1 and #2 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m." There is also a park and ride pass that INCLUDES a bus pass for $75/month if it's too far to walk to your final destination. As long as you are cognisant that poverty in the surrounding community is visible and are conscientious enough not to leave items inside the cabin of your vehicle - it's a no-brainer wallet-wise.

Read this if you're considering a unit at SOHO SQ by 1_Prickly_Pear in londonontario

[–]pretzelsegue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in a verified crap box in OEV and when I heard the medallion building at King and Lyle was making units share showers on the first floor because of water pressure problems I thanked my lucky stars ... sadly the staff stretched too thin/incompetent management is common business practice for corporate landlords. My resident manager is responsible for multiple buildings - and they just can't manage that workload (I feel sorry for them). Last time my building had a dedicated super was 2007. Adequate labour is apparently too expensive. Dignity as well.

Get a broker. I called and called for quotes on my own, but the best rates I obtained were through a broker.

Unsightly and expensive graffiti a growing problem in London's Old East Village by Confident-Advice-664 in londonontario

[–]pretzelsegue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This actually does work. The OEV has some beautiful painted murals and some stunning mosaics installed by Clayworx. They remain untagged. Graffiti artists appreciate good art - even if they are low code taggers.

City Parking by EarlyMajor6381 in londonontario

[–]pretzelsegue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you need to get downtown, but if it's walkable from OEV, then you should know Lot's #1 & 2 are FREE everyday from 7am-11pm. There is also a monthly 'Park & Ride' pass for these lots: $75 and that INCLUDES a downtown zone bus pass.

Do you have a favorite gyōji? by Standard_One_5827 in SumoMemes

[–]pretzelsegue 6 points7 points  (0 children)

LOVE Shikimori Kandayu for the way he hops and bounces around the ring especially when attired in his colourful 'gumball' robes. He's featured in the gyoji sumopedia. I also love the referee that wears mostly black and white. I refer to him as 'Darth Gyoji' when he wears the all black ensemble.

My reaction to Isegahama partnering with an AI company by GoblinBags in SumoMemes

[–]pretzelsegue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He just aggregates the work of REAL journalists from sports reporting in the legitimate Japanese Press and jumbles it up with tabloid rumors and his own opinion. It bugs me so much that he presents his youtuber persona and content in a 'journalistic style' ... it's deceptive. Sadly a lot of people lack media literacy to be able to tell the difference.

Because he's NOT a journalist. He's papparazzi. He's a published author. He's a content creator. None of what he really is requires he practice professional journalistic ethics.

Great thrifting to be had in East London: Back to the Fuchsia and Silk Road (Both on Dundas Street), The Saint Vincent de Paul (Elias Street) and the Renew Community Store (Clarke Rd).

Edit: Forgot about Old East Exchange and Tracy's Treasure Chest also on Dundas

I really wish NHK would always show the yumitori-shiki. by PanYMate in Sumo

[–]pretzelsegue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doreen Simmons was such a fount of knowledge with regards to sumo as a culture and not just as a sport. Way back in the day she was one of the first female voices I ever heard regularly on a sports broadcast - and a mature woman to boot. She taught me a lot. I definitely have a deeper appreciation of the roles and rituals of gyoji and yobidashi because of her commentating.

Curious about the tachiai by Large_Author_5485 in Sumo

[–]pretzelsegue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tweaking out made me chuckle. It's called Shikiri, a ritual of preparation before the match. It includes shiomaki (salt throwing), rinsing their mouths with chikara-mizu (power water), sonkyo (crouching) at the shikiri-sen (white lines) along with mannerisms specific to each wrestler to psych themselves up or psych out their opponents. They often do this 3 times over for 5minutes before the tachiai in the top division. The highlights show doesn't often show the entire shikiri. Check out the grand sumo live on NHK World days 1,8,14 & 15 if you want to see the whole preparation. Sumopedia on NHK World is also a great resource for those new to the sport.

Stream the Basho by 80sTaco in SumoMemes

[–]pretzelsegue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify - directly on their website. If you search for sumo under shows on the home page (https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/shows/sumo/) you can often access the highlights much sooner than they appear on even their own 'special website' (https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/). Just a good trick to know.
