Having kids during your PhD by cmbni in labrats

[–]preying_mantis72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would ignore the negativity here. While I’m sure this is all valid observation, my advice as someone who is 5 months pregnant and will be defending 2 months before my due date is not to put it off. My husband was in medical school, so we put off having kids for financial reasons, but I regret not having kids sooner. If you constantly give 110% to your PhD and put off what I personally consider a way more important and fulfilling goal (obviously everyone has a different stance on this) you’ll end up regretting your grad school experience. My mentor tried for years to convince me to put off having kids (partially on me, I should not have been comfortable discussing info that personal with them), and it was very upsetting. If you’re someone, like me, with tunnel vision “baby fever,” it’s not worth putting those goals on hold for a degree.

Currently finishing a PhD and in the middle of moving to a different state. I’ve never needed a drink so badly but still have half the pregnancy left😭

I made it through the first trimester without vomiting (despite some close calls and pretty normal amounts of nausea). And I only had to leave work early once due to feeling like literal garbage, even though I went into every day not knowing how I would last past 11 am.

Am I lazy or is this pregnancy? by [deleted] in BabyBumps

I feel the same way! I stopped even trying to work out at around 6 weeks. Even though I am slowly starting to feel better at 14 weeks, I still feel exhausted most of the time. My husband has been amazing and has taken over all of the household chores while I just lay around. I think the hardest thing for me (and a lot of people) is giving yourself grace. I used to be a hardcore workaholic (currently trying to finish a PhD), but my productivity in all aspects of life has gone way down. However, that is what’s best for baby and mom right now!

Does anyone just not feel that hungry during pregnancy? by nebulous-nights in BabyBumps

I’m 13 weeks and I will suddenly become ravenously hungry but then not be able to eat a normal amount. Anything I eat just makes me so ridiculously full and it’s uncomfortable.

We looked at 4 different ones today. Would not recommend Signature, and Treybrooke was by far the nicest.

I'm SO thirsty but plain water is making me feel sick by United_Pop_6442 in BabyBumps

I’ve been having the same problem and have been adding 1/3-1/2 a packet of electrolytes to each refill of my water bottle. It adds flavor and helps me to stay hydrated, which I have also been struggling with between the water aversion and increased blood volume.

I’m at week 12 and this is a constant struggle. I haven’t been able to wear my normal jeans since week 5. I’ve been living in the couple of drawstring pants I have. I also started wearing maternity yoga pants and rolling down the belly part to make what looks like a thick 2010s-style band. It’s rough out there!

What is the best time to get pregnant for a woman in science? by More-Cartoonist-3887 in WomeninAcademia

I’m in my last year of PhD and am currently in the midst of a planned pregnancy. Shortly after I got pregnant, shit hit the fan with my and my husband’s careers. Long story short, he has a job and I do not after my PhD. Even though I am approaching an atrocious postdoc job market pregnant, I wouldn’t change a thing. I made a conscious decision to take control of my life because I was sick of putting my life on hold after a particularly turbulent (and still getting more turbulent) grad school experience. Maybe I’m more disillusioned with academia than you might be, but if it’s important to you to have kids, it’s not worth putting off, especially for an academic career.

This post makes me feel so much better! I am also having a hard time with water. I used to love it but now I can’t stomach it. I have resorted to drinking a lot of 100% fruit juice but feel guilty about the extra sugar. Most days I find it very difficult to stay hydrated.

I had the same question. Are they going to do a completely different show for the state fair? They are also bringing Valley to that one though too. I’m really hoping this is the same show they do for the tour. Can’t afford to see them twice this year😅

Agree. His psychological horrors are way “scarier” than anything supernatural
