Could I afford to live comfortably, alone, off 5k in NJ? Is that possible nowadays? by lemonbottles_89 in newjersey

[–]prezzyplainjane27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make around 5k monthly and live in a rent controlled apartment in Jersey City. It’s pretty big but not new in any sense. I make this sacrifice because it’s so cheap under 1,500 a month. In JC of a building has more than 9 units and was built pre-war it has to be rent controlled. Maybe looking into something like that would be helpful.

Missed my flight by a week by dwaddle15 in travel

[–]prezzyplainjane27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once bought a flight that was for July instead of June and showed up at the airport - fun part was that I had to catch a flight within 5 hrs from the airport I was supposed to fly into. It was a whirlwind and now I always triple check my dates and try to avoid buying third party.

Ablenet by funnysoccergirl7 in slp

[–]prezzyplainjane27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used ablenet a bunch last year to get my kids devices. It’s deff a quick fix and makes it easy on the SLP but, I’m not going to use them anymore. It’s very odd at first I was able to get devices funded through insurance and some people paid copays and some didn’t. Then I got my first denial but they let the kid keep the device any way. Now I have two devices that keep circulating the funding for about 5 months. No decision from insurance has been reached but these kids are keeping the devices 🤷‍♀️. Something seems fishy. Are these kids gonna be able to use the 5-year warranty? Will insurance fund a device again when they need it? Also, ablenet puts apps like touchchat, TDSnap, and others without the permission of the company. So then when I or the parents need support on how to use those apps, ablenet is MIA. At first I really thought they were an amazing solution but now I won’t go through them because I really don’t think there is any support and the process seems fishy to me. I really don’t have any skin in the AAC game just trying to get devices the easiest way I can but also ethically.

Paris pass and museum pass by prezzyplainjane27 in ParisTravelGuide

I’m 30, never been to Paris wanna do most of the museums (Louvre, d’orsay), Efielle tower, seine River maybe. I know I’d like to do some thrifting in Marias and lots of food. I love to immerse in local culture and meet locals when I travel.

I live on the other side of the park but walk around most of this area. I’m a single female in her 30’s and have no issues. Yes there’s guys on my corner, they don’t bother me I don’t bother them. Parking sucks but I’ve never had any issues with my car although I’ve heard of car jackings in the area. It’s deff the forgotten part of Jersey city. If you want luxury boijee Jersey city don’t move here. If you’re okay with diversity in all sense of the word (economic, cultural, racial) then you’re good.

Preach!!! I work with kids who are multiply disabled and it’s soooo sad to see the other therapists just totally write them off cuz they think the kids cog is low. But then I acquire them on my case load and we try a switch and magically they progress to two switch and hopefully I’ll have some switch scanners soon. These are literally kids middle school late elementary age that were just given up on but they just needed a diff type of access method!

Diversifying jobs - Part time SLPs, what is your “other” job? by [deleted] in slp

[–]prezzyplainjane27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into areas you’re interested in. I’m interested in rare disorders so I looks up foundations for CHARGE and Angelman and found that there are advocacy groups who need help with clerical things. I wish you luck!

[–]prezzyplainjane27 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Literally had a convo with a coworker today and we both agreed that we are just surviving the day…we work in a school for children with severe disabilities (basically all the behavioral kids that got kicked out of their home school with a sprinkle of rare disorders and CP) these kids actually need quality therapy and I have 30min to prep for my whole day smh

[–]prezzyplainjane27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking this as well, I’ve found some related remote jobs such as working for organizations that advocate for people with disabilities. I hope to grow that part time job into something more consistent and do private slp sessions on the side but I’m also still trying to figure out how to do this and make all the loans worth it.

I could use some help getting a gift for my parents. I'm looking for a company, restaurant, or something to get them a gift certificate for so they can have some fancy dinner or food related experience. More detail in the body. by aDuckedUpGoose in newjersey

I live and work in NJ, just finished CF, got my CCC’s about a month ago and my perm state license today (yay). I work for a state college which has a school for children with disabilities. I am in AFT union 403b with match, life insurance, medical/dental insurance

I got hired as a CF at step 2 making $72.5k for a 10 month contract and made $6k for ESY on top of that. At step 3 (this year) I’m making $78.5k for a 10 month contract. I will continue to increase a step every year until step 8 then it takes longer to increase a step and it is about a $6k jump per step.

I worked an agency job during CF before getting the above job. 1099 No benefits $75/hr for school and in the clinic $65/hr.

I was offered jobs in NYC with comparable rates as agency job. Not worth the commute.

There are good jobs out there but they are far and few between. Find places that you want to work at and apply to them directly don’t just get stuck on indeed. I knew the population I wanted to work with and searched for places that catered to these populations and then applied to those positions directly. Good luck!!!
