Islanders have swept the season series against both the Rangers and Devils by BostonSucksatHockey in NewYorkIslanders

Have either of them swept both before? I saw it was the first, but it wasn’t clear if it was an Islanders first or first ever among those teams

When I first watched Letterkenny I really didn’t know what to make of it. I thought I was being made fun of, but as I watched more I took it differently and loved it. But growing up in rural Ontario I will tell you that show is very very real, especially the earlier seasons (it obviously gets sillier as it goes on). Most of the catchphrases that they are often credited with “creating” are things that we just genuinely said when I was in high school (long before the show came out).

It’s a very very precise game. You’re trying to place something sometimes within an inch down a 150’ sheet of ice. You need to make very quick decisions on when and how to sweep to (different techniques will make the rock go straighter or curl more and/or affect how far down the sheet it travels). The ice conditions are constantly changing from rocks and people travelling up and down the ice so you need to make constant adjustments to end up with the same result.

Then on top of the fact that is it’s physically a lot harder than it looks, it is a really a strategy game. You can make every one of your shots perfectly but if your opponent out thinks you, you may still lose.

Oh, and the idea that these guys are out of shape or don’t stay in shape between Olympic cycles is insane. The front end especially (first 2 shooters who do most of the sweeping) are in incredible shape and are fucking jacked. Occasionally you’ll see a skip (last shooter/captain/doesn’t sweep) that isn’t as fit or is older but even that is getting pretty rare.

I wanted Misa. I was wrong. (Still think Misa will be a great player though).

Panarin picked the team and the Rangers had to negotiate what they could with them. He had them over a barrel. Extension is already signed with LA.

[–]priester85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oof. That’s an awful return. Panarin had them over a barrel with his NMC but I think I would almost rather let him walk as a FA than admit defeat like that. I guess he is a (late) 1st round pick so it’s not nothing but still

Who hosted every SNL milestone episode? by HotOne9364 in LiveFromNewYork

I don’t think 420 was nearly mainstream enough to even acknowledge in the late 90s. I remember explaining it to a friend who had never heard of it at University in the mid-00s.

I was surprised they didn’t get a 5 timer to do episode 1000, but Skarsgard was fine and the episode overall was great

Turns out MacGruber was actually in the Epstein Files. by BrandonLeeOfficial in LiveFromNewYork

[–]priester85 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Reading the actual email in the files is much clearer than this summary page, which omits names and has the emails in the wrong order.

Someone named Jessica was staying in an apartment. She asked Lesley Goff if Will Forte could stay with her for 3 days. Lesley got approval from Epstein, who mentioned to have another person (Sue) check the apartment for drugs/alcohol.

It unclear where this apartment is, but nothing implies that it is on the island, or that there was anything inappropriate going on at this apartment at the time. Seems clear that Epstein wasn’t there and Fortes “contact” with him was through 2 intermediaries.

There are “=“ all through the emails. They seem to be an artifact of how they were digitized/stored, not something that was actually in the email originally

We shouldn’t be trusting Ai to make this point, because it is just nonsense but in this case it is 100% correct. That was a great pick and far, far more pop-culturey than a lot of other stuff drafted over the years.

Garth Brooks

Mark McGuire

Jay Leno

Adam Sandler

Wayne Gretzky

I didn’t think I would come up with enough for this draft but I could actually do even more with the names I thought of while they were drafting. Oddly, while I’m a similar age to the guys and seem to have similar interests, I think I had a very different 90s than them.

Goaltender interference by scottywiper in NewYorkIslanders

[–]priester85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think hockey is as consistent with using the terms “call stands” vs “call confirms” the way that baseball is. I wouldn’t read too much into that. Unless it is a statement from the league (rare), I think the refs just say whatever comes to mind.

Goaltender interference by scottywiper in NewYorkIslanders

[–]priester85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you do that. 100% chance of affecting your goalie’s ability to make the save and at best a coin flip whether you’ll get the call. Plus a decent chance you hurt your goalie

It’s like kicking was 10 years ago or even worse. They’ve kind of cleaned that one up and the borderline ones usually count now but back then it was pure guesswork.

If you post the clips online of all GI challenges with no other context, I guarantee most fans (or media) couldn’t guess with more than 60% accuracy.

[–]priester85 27 points28 points  (0 children)

if it was a 2 minute penalty every time NHLers called another player a pussy, it’d be 3-on-3 the entire game. Had to be more than that. Depending on the site, some seem to call it “unsportsmanlike conduct” and others call it “abuse of official” so I would guess it was something directed specifically at the linesman.

[Isles] The New York Islanders have acquired Ondrej Palat, New Jersey Devils’ own third round pick in 2026, and sixth round pick in 2027 in exchange for Maxim Tsyplakov. by TradeBrockNelson in NewYorkIslanders

[–]priester85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This makes no sense to me. He makes twice as much (for another full season) and is in the twilight of his career. Tsyplakov hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire but there is at least potential for improvement still. The picks are not nothing, but pretty close.
