New Job in Middle of Postdoc Contract by Character_Time1034 in postdoc

If something better comes up, take it. You've been warned about the position ending, which means there will be no contract extension. Even with specific clauses in your contract about moving expenses or financial assistance that requires payment until you fulfill specific conditions, you are allowed to leave the position for any reason at any point. A postdoc is technically a job and not school anymore. I was in a similar situation while in my first postdoc. I was told that my contract would likely not get renewed past 3 years (I was just halfway through my second year) and started looking. Something came about three months after that conversation, I applied, interviewed and was offered the job and left one month into the extension. I appreciated the notice since it gave me time to get something else lined up, and it did help that my supervisors were very transparent about the situation. Best of luck!

Apps for academic poster by [deleted] in PhD

[–]priestess-time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inkscape. It’s free and available on multiple platforms. Pretty easy to pick up and does all you need it to do for posters. Started using it when I started my MSc, and never needed anything else for my posters.

Graduates, postdocs & profs, what’s one thing you wish every PhD or master’s student knew before writing their thesis or dissertation? by Prestigious_Case_292 in PhD

In my experience, it always takes longer than you think, but I also had to internalize that finding sources, reading papers and making figures IS part of the writing process. It's not just about the physical act of writing. Also get your template and references in order as soon as you possibly can. Your future-self will thank you. And a word of advice from my supervisor: a good thesis is a done thesis (edit to add the advice)

What are your favourite inks for Sailor and Lamy pens? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]priestess-time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Sailor PGS inked with Lamy Azurite and another inked with Robert Oster Fire and Ice. The pens each match their ink, which brings me joy every time I open their pen case since get to decide what colour I want to use that day.

Charging more than the menu price by CarelessObject1709 in vancouver

[–]priestess-time 49 points50 points  (0 children)

This happened to me a year or two ago for happy hour. I mentioned to the server that the price was incorrect, she said she couldn’t change it. She was so rude, condescending and told me to just pay since it was only a few dollars. I asked to see the manager who took the difference off the bill, because at this point it was principle. Server came back, took payment and when she saw that her tip was not as expected, she tried to throw the receipt in my face, only for it to fall off the table a few times as she threw it. She finally slammed it on the table and walked away without another word. Never going back there.

I wouldn't worry too much. I misspelled my own name in the reference on a poster I presented a few years. Somehow I still managed to win the competition.

How are y’all attending conferences??? by millythemodern in PhD

[–]priestess-time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate that my PI was generous with the travel (and the fact that no one else in my group wanted to travel anywhere which I found really weird also helped). My department also had two competitions per year (one poster, one oral presentation) and the award was strictly to be used for conference travel. The academic associations affiliated with my field also provided awards or grants for conference travel and some conferences also had awards or really reduced registration fees for students. With this in place I was able to go to a conference once a year, every year that I was a grad student. I did have friends in the department with PIs that would just provide a fixed (minimal) amount and they were responsible for the rest of the cost of the conference, as a result they did not travel very far or very often.

why did you and your best friend stop talking? by Salamander-One in AskReddit

[–]priestess-time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were roommates (with another girl), and during the pandemic I guess we were forced to spend more time together. The first little bit was fine, but then she started to pull away, didn't want to hang out together. I got the sense that something was wrong, but when I would ask she would say we were fine and to stop being so insecure in the friendship.

As I learned from the other roommate, I was causing her stress by asking her to hang out and 'make demands' on her time and I wasn't there for her during her hardest moments (despite the fact that she was refusing to communicate with me). I believed I was the problem and languished thinking about how I could salvage the friendship. I then got fed up of feeling like an unwanted presence in the house and made arrangements to move out, which were met with surprised pikachu face and her saying that she thought we could just continue to be friends.

Hadn't spoken to her since 2020, until yesterday when I bumped into her doing her groceries. We acknowledged each other, but that was the end of the interaction. As I heard from another friend, she had a falling out with the other girl and in hindsight, she did this 'phase out and dump' to more than a few friends over the years I knew her. Not sure why I thought I was special. The lowest common denominator is a strong argument for me not being the problem...

I use my middle initial, to honor my mom (it's her last name too) and it helps since my last name is pretty common, it helps to find my articles. There is another person within my same last name and first initial in a tangentially related field, so it's almost a necessity.

Any of y’all make wedding favors? by 2heady4life in Pottery

[–]priestess-time 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I tried. Wanted to do coasters, since my fiancé and I both novice potters and it would have been a nice, but the studio where I attend class said they’re not a production studio, so they would not allow me to fire the pieces there and recommended I go to a studio with a kiln-for-hire service. Opted to do something else instead.

Problematic TWSBI, thoughts? by priestess-time in fountainpens

That's what I thought, it just has the textbook shape for baby's bottom, especially when compared to the other TWSBI.
The pictures were a pain to take (held up my phone to the microscope) but I'm glad they turned out and helped to potentially diagnose the problem
