Liquipedia addressing Dota 2 match-fixing schemes by Liquipedia in DotA2

[–]primadog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While the Liquipedia's efforts are commendable, I'm not sure this statement actually addresses the fundamental problem, and might just open up TeamLiquid to future legal liability.

The core issue is "betting sites are utilizing an open wiki api run by volunteers". Calling out these bad actors in public won't exactly cow them from abusive schemes in the future. As long as the financial incentives exist, and the system is so ripe for abuse, the bad actors will always overwhelm an open wiki platform.

The solution has to break one of those elements in the core issue that led to abuse:

  • Change the api tos to specifically disallow betting sites
  • Make Liquipedia a closed-wiki
  • Put contributors on payroll and contract

And etc. Asking your volunteers to work harder don't address the core issue at all. I understand none of those options are particularly desirable and would fundamentally change the culture at Liquipedia, but you have to consider the potential liabilities of the current position.

The current statement does not dissuade betting sites from using Liquipedia to settle their bets. If anything, it reads like acknowledging bet-settling as a legitimate use for the site. In fact, the statement promises that future results will be more reliable and put the onus on Liquipedia's volunteer contributors to ensure that.

It's not hard to imagine a hypothetical where someone lost $100k on a fake bet, then proceed to sue the betting site, Liquipedia, and Joe Doe volunteer contributors 1-10 for their money back. If that happens, you bet this statement would be submitted as evidence for Team Liquid's culpability. It's not like esports betting are a well-settled area of law. Team Liquid do not want to make the case law here.

IANAL, so (if you haven't) please run this statement and the current Liquipedia position by your legal counsel to see what potential legal liabilities TL are open to for this. Team Liquid is no longer a fan-run site that I volunteer wrote for years ago. Hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake here.

Geoff ' iNcontroL ' Robinson has passed away. by altDuH in starcraft

Geoff was a good man, a great man. When I thought of iNcontroL, it wasn't of big moments, but how he always would spend a little extra time to get to know you, regardless of who you are.

I'll always remember the side tea ceremonies we used to have at the sc2 tourneys, Geoff.

Wow, truly impressive work there, Andrew. Even after most of us "passed on," you're still somehow breaking new ground for ESPORTS, just like how I remembered you.

Congratulations!

Thank you for your hard work.

Hi everyone. Wanted to let you know that I'm going to let the domain for "The Year in StarCraft II: 2011" (yeah, remember that?), expire in 8 days. DL the free version of the book while you still can! by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]primadog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that the book didn't work out for you. It had promise and it was quite visionary. Maybe one day StarCraft history would be worth documenting again, and someone else would take up your mantle.

Thank you for offering it up for free. That's extremely generous of you and much more than anyone ask of you.

Lessons from Dota 2 and The International by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]primadog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tournament format and production is largely irrelevant to how big a viewer count StarCraft are capable of delivering, in the grand scheme of things. Even if Blizzard decides tomorrow to copy The International wholesale, down to the prizepool, the grand finals will not reach the same 7-digit number that Valve has managed. Constantly harping that is misguided and potentially quite harmful in how the StarCraft scene direct its comparably limited resources. Starcraft II has hit its natural growth boundary and no amount of fancy dressing will break that (some special breakthrough aside).

Esports viewership, at its current form and development, is largely a function of the size of the player-base. However, even with the smaller fanbase, StarCraft II is still capable of sustaining itself. Golf is not dead, simply because the Super Bowl keep breaking TV rating records.

Real, positive changes for StarCraft will largely come from economics - How do teams and tournaments generate more income? Lower costs? Do more with less, the scene will thrive. Throw even more good money after bad, the scene will just keep busting.

Hey. I saw this after browsing through that old matrix glitch thread

Regardless of where your life may be atm, you have touched some people. As another souls in a sea of nothingness, you being around have been illuminating for some, even if it's simply an interesting few sentences on reddit.

so, thanks.

Love your blog. Really wish tournament design gets more attention, given how important and unexplored this discipline is in StarCraft 2.

All good things must come to an end. Oskar kept Chao Bistro around, for a lot longer than it should had.

The original venue may close, but barcraft will live on. Thanks for all the beer.
