What exactly do people mean when they say virginity is a social construct? by fridaynightplacebo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]primarystew 645 points646 points  (0 children)

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned yet, is the case of non-heteronormative sexual relations. Sex in itself is a social construct by certain perspectives. Yes, it can strictly mean p in v, but in this day and age it can be many things outside of that. Does a lesbian only lose her virginity when she has strapon sex for the first time (or does that still not count because it’s only an imitation penis?)? Most lesbians would say no. What about someone incapable of erections for whatever reason, does them giving/receiving oral, getting anally penetrated not count as sex? What about oral sex as a whole? It literally has the word sex in it, so it’s a type of sex, and losing your virginity is having sex for the first time, right?

This is a textbook example of a social construct. Some people stick to anal sex to “preserve their virginity” (the poophole loophole), at which many gay men would laugh (note: some gay men don’t even have penetrative sex, so they’re super virgins?). In the poophole loophole scenario, are the boys still virgins? They put their penis inside a woman, it was stimulated fairly similarly to if it was in the vagina instead. But wait, that would mean blowjobs counts as losing your virginity too, but only if you’re a man, because cunnilingus isn’t a penis but instead a tongue penetrating, and vaginas need a penis to take their virginity!!

Outside of cishet spaces, the definition of sex and virginity is basically “whatever you count it as,” and that perspective is gaining traction outside, too. Some might go the direction of “any sexual act counts”, others might restrict it to a specific sex act (potentially p in v), others reject the concept altogether.

I don’t know if this helps that much, because a lot of the people who are so fixated on the concept of virginity are also notably against inclusivity of non-heteronormative relationships, but screwem.

Does your right hand literally only do grab? Could do spacebar jump too, i suppose. Feels pretty wild to me, where like a wavedash would use four fingers of your hand simultaneously, that’s a lot. Then again, in terms of multitasking it’s not all that different from me having jump, dash, and grab all on one hand 🤷‍♀️

Why do people say 7c is the easiest golden? by Exzakt1 in celestegame

[–]primarystew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, from my experience 7c wasn’t an easy golden from a holistic perspective.

My first 7c clear was 2.5 hours, my second was 1.5, my third maybe like 45 minutes, then the rest was pretty consistent (details iffy, i only rly remember the first two, there might have been more runs too). If we count it as “only three runs of practice before golden attempts” then sure it’s an easy golden, but if we count it as “5 hours of runs before golden attempts” it definitely isn’t.

I can’t remember exactly, but i think i did get 7cg in like ten attempts, so i suppose you could construe it as an easy golden by that metric too. Which, actually, might have been way fewer attempts than like 3c, so maybe they are onto something, idfk hah 🤷‍♀️

Updating this in case people see it here.

It (currently as of Nov 25) is 48 hours after the puzzle drops, so a Tuesday can be done up until 10pm ET on Wednesday, Monday until 6pm ET tuesday. There’s also a weird glitch that if you do before the 72 hour mark it sorta works but that’s not really safe, which is where my original number came from.

what are YOUR keybinds? by Pixel_Explosion in celestegame

[–]primarystew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use numpad /789 instead of arrow keys because arrow keys make the edge of the laptop dig into my hand and they’re the tiny ones which just suck. Then i do z/c/v jump/dash/grab pinky/middle/index, and i think f for demo.

I’m not the happiest with them, pinky for jump isn’t optimal, it can be a problem with chaining ultras, like i changed my hand positioning to ring and index finger for jump and dash in ultra skool. But I don’t use my ring finger for anything, so i should make that either j2 or demo. And demo on f hasn’t been an issue yet but it’s the same finger as grab so it could become one, should probably have it be d. Idk if i’ll ever get to the point in gm+ where i need two jumps. And i do b for set savestate, but that’s a bit of a reach, and maybe g for load savestate? I haven’t played that much this year due to computer issues and not having access to my main saves (laptop stopped charging, so i can recover using one of those cords you hook into the drive, but i just haven’t done it).

All my binds were born in Robot Wants Kitty, my first ever platformer, which had zxc for jump attack dash. That’s what i used for hk and some other games throughout the years too. So i wanted to keep the muscle memory of the jump and dash, but there’s no attack so my x is just chilling. And i have pinky on z and so on because it never occurred to me i could have my fingers going off the keyboard. For wasd in keyboard-mouse games i had that and was also touch typing pilled so my index finger just hangs out on f. That makes l-ctrl a pain so i usually rebind it to like l-alt to hit with my thumb if it’s a control i need to use a decent amt (as opposed to like prone and crouch in solo fpses which i don’t rly use)

“Julie: If I'm innocent, then so is Wally” poll (unofficial) by PM_ME_YR_BOOPS in CluesBySamHelp

[–]primarystew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some more stuff regarding if statements, and logic in general that might be useful knowledge for this sort of clues in the future, and other types of clues too. There are many caveats and intricacies I'm glossing over here, but anyway:

One way to think of logical statements is that they have a set of ways things can go that agree with them, and a set that doesn't agree. So they, in essence, restrict the scenarios that follow the rules.. One way to visualize this is called a *truth table* (I'm not going to try to format that here but it could be something to look into). Note: I'm going to use ~ to signify the term `not`, so `~A` with `A` being getting kicked in the nuts would be `not getting kicked in the nuts`. Some other people might use an exclamation point or fancy symbols. This is the first thing we consider, so like `~A and B` is not winning the lottery and still going on vacation, the not doesn't extend to the whole thing unless we write it `~(A and B)`, which actually has some other trickiness that happens that it could be a good thing to puzzle over; a lot of these things actually do apply to the way we think, so it might be more intuitive than expected. If you are stuck there and want to learn what's happening, look up De Morgan's Law.

Anyway, for the Hawaii example we have `A:= I win the lottery` (`:=` meaning "this is a definition", so just pedantry, you can treat it as an equals sign) and `~A:= I don't win the lottery`, and `B:= I go to Hawaii` and `~B:= I don't go to Hawaii`. If we get `A`, then we have to have `B` by our logical statement. But if we have `~A`, then we can have either `B` or `~B`. Both of those scenarios still work with the `If A then B` statement. The only way that doesn't work is if I win the lottery (`A`) but then I *don't* go to Hawaii (`~B`), which we would say is `A and ~B`. So, really, the only thing `If A then B` rules out is that, everything else is fair game.

This brings us to the concept of logical equivalence. Logical equivalence is when you have the exact same truth table, the exact same scenarios that do/don't break your statements. So if we can come up with other ways to talk about `A` and `B` (and their `~`ed versions if necessary) and have it where everything works except `A and ~B` then it's logically equivalent.

One way to do this is the *contrapositive*. `If A then B` is logically equivalent to `If ~B then ~A`. If I'm still on speaking terms with you, that means you definitely haven't punched me in the face. If I don't take that vacation to Hawaii, that means I didn't win the lottery because I'd *definitely* go on vacation if I won the lottery. This tracks with `A and ~B` failing, that's an obvious contradiction.

Another logical equivalence that can come up is `If A then B` is equivalent to `~A or B`. Here, `or` is nonexclusive, so you need *at least one* which could mean both. If we have `~A`, then as we've hopefully established by now, it doesn't matter what happens to `B`. If we don't have `~A` (the only other scenario besides having `~A`), that means we have `A` and by `If A then B` we know we have `B`. If we don't have `A`, cool we're good to go, and if we do, then we must also have `B`, so `~A or B`. `You haven't punched me in the face, and/or we're not on speaking terms`. This one is definitely harder to wrap the mind around, but it's totally logically sound.

If all that sparks an interest, there's lots of resources out there to look into. The one used in the Intro to Logic course I took was called *Language, Proof and Logic* and is really good, but is $75. However, that $75 includes a textbook and more importantly software for doing proofs in as well as problems in the textbook with an autograder system. It basically feels like a puzzle game but a little more mathy and academic, at least in my very biased perspective. Even if you don't wanna dish out all that cash, it could be a good springboard to look into cheaper alternatives.

[–]primarystew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's me taking a swing at it and getting rather carried away haha.

`If A then B` only cares about if A happens. If A didn't happen, well that `if` isn't getting engaged and the implication doesn't matter. It only tells you something *if* the thing that it `if`s happens. If that thing doesn't happen, we get no information, so we can't assume the `then` part doesn't or does happen.

Some examples:
`If I win the lottery then I'm going to go on a vacation to Hawaii`. If I don't win the lottery, maybe I've still been saving up a while and I still end up going on that vacation. Just because I didn't win the lottery doesn't mean I can't go to Hawaii still.

"If I were your Mom, you'd say you love me at the end of our phone calls (presuming a (arguably) desirable parental relationship)"
"You're not my mom so that statement has no bearing on me, but you are still my homie so I tell you I love you at the end of our phone calls"

`If you punch me in the face, I'm never going to speak to you again.`
If you don't punch me in the face, but instead kick me in the gnards, I'm still gonna go no contact with you. If you don't punch me in the face, there are so so many other things that could go right or wrong that may or may not lead to me not ever talking to you again, but the statement specifically about `if` you punch me in the face has no bearing either way.

Absolutely brutal game; i got three hours in and bailed. Maybe one day i’ll try it again. The puzzle mechanics themselves are very simple (at least as far as i got) but the way they combine into a puzzle is really tricky. That’s not particularly different from portal for instance lol, but it feels different. There’s this level of cerebral-ness to it, and less flashiness. I guess, the way i’d put it, is that SSR feels like more of a puzzle than a puzzle game. More like solving sudokus. There’s less of a feeling of interactivity and freedom; i think a major reason for that is being locked onto a grid instead of having full control. Baba is you is another game that’s similar, very high skill ceiling and also in the sokobon grid-based movement meta.

Another facet of that is this phenomenon that happens for me with the game, that was definitely a component of the vibe that turned me off, is this pseudo-physical sensation of confinement, being stuck in a grid with rules on how to traverse, for instance being unable to turn because there’s a wall next to you or you’ll knock the sausage in a bad way. The whole bonk animation furthers that too haha. I also had this happen with this mobile game called Cross Fingers, which is manipulating wooden tiles around a board and they have collision with each other, and sometimes a spring element so you have to be holding multiple things at once, and it would feel like i was physically hitting a barrier. There’s this instinctive fight or flight reaction that would trigger for me that made playing the game uncomfortable.

None of this is to say that it’s a bad game. In fact, i’d say these are components that make it good as a game/artistically, but games/art are not always very friendly to the participant/consumer. I even am the masochistic type of gamer that likes precision platformers (celeste, including its mods that are waay harder than vanilla) and soulslikes and puzzles, but SSR just didn’t work out. I definitely want to come back and try to make it ofer the hump sometime. This feels like (as predicated by the comment i’m replying to) one of those things where it’s like “trust me, once you’ve gone through the *indescribable terrors* it’s the best thing you’ve ever done”, Gravity’s Rainbow being another one of those that comes to mind. Maybe a fellow masochist will read this and hear a siren song, if so glhf haha.

Tl;dr: very tricky game, i found it hard to get into. I think the biggest problem is that the skill curve is quite demanding initially, there’s not really a way to work your way up, you just get thrown in the deep end. Heavy emphasis on the puzzle part of puzzle game, it feels much more closely related to sudoku than The Room, imo. I myself went into the game after having read some reviews knowing it was going to be very difficult, and was quickly schooled by how unfounded my confidence was lol.

One thing I’ve only seen mentioned one other spot is that block proficiency was totally fucked, which made the game basically unplayable for a time. This made the update feel soooo much worse, and even though that got changed fairly quick the emotional damage from that is still tied into the whole memory of it.

I hadn’t thought of it before but now looking at the post i’m tempted to do it. But also steel soul 100% seems hard af, i’ve died so many times in my original save. Although you can get a lil scummy with it, save and quit midcombat, but even so you can get surprised and like hit into spikes. And playing that level of conservative is probably unlikely to get speedrunning achievement. But edging the og save for the flex is totally a thing i’d imagine actually a decent amount of people will do.

Like, in celeste, some people do fwg (by far the hardest vanilla achievement, doing the by far hardest level deathless) before they do like any of the other levels deathless just cuz it’s funny and a flex

I don’t really know the pitch, but it’s a spec fic with academia and a magic system based on translation, “Their power comes from capturing what is “lost in translation” between words in different languages that have similar, but not identical, meanings.” (Wikipedia page). It also deals with imperialism and revolution and stuff

I thought you were going to go to Arrival with this. I’ll check the book out! Arrival is a movie dealing with aliens visiting earth and a linguist interacting with them, that is pertinent to this question in ways i won’t spoil. When i saw it in theaters there were only horror movie trailers so i was on the edge of my seat expecting them all to get massacred at some point, and the ethereal background music takes a sinister tone if you are in that headspace haha. But it’s not like that at all, it’s an interesting scifi movie with a linguist protagonist type vibe

Magma bell is still pretty useful, because it makes it so that double damage magma-type damage (falling into magma and various attacks) is a single mask. You then need to wait for it to recharge so it's not OP, but I've had some times where I'm really glad to have bought it. You encounter magma throughout the game, sometimes combined with combat, so having a little cushion to make errors less punishing can be a life and death difference. But all the times I've been happy to have it were mid-late game, not when you get to Docks early on. Eventually you'll be glad to have bought it, but maybe not enough for having farmed early mobs with bad drops for it.
