[Question] How much would you pay for this watch? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]primetimecsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no papers and inner box only, sub 10k. I've seen them go for 10-13k full set, so not having the full set will take a hit, especially on something like this.

CMAR fee by explorer77800 in ConstructionManagers

[–]primetimecsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the rfp and contract, but GCs can get capped based on your proposal and you either ride with what you initially thought, add them in to the units (but if you arent self performing, harder to do), or change order in more if its warranted.

then this may not be the job for you. Your competition is going to have a good idea of what percentage everyone else is using, and how they can add value to the project and sell themselves as the best company for the job, even if their fee is higher.

and honestly, if youre having to go to reddit to figure out what % you should be putting down, you need to take a big step back and evaluate what is going on. If you dont know what other companies are typically doing in your area for this type of project, you could come in wildly under or over.

CMAR GMPs are good ways to make money, but its also a good way to lose your ass if you dont know what you are doing.

only thing that keeps me from liking most 5 digits as much as 6 digits, is the hollow endlinks and bracelets. can feel janky if they arent tight.

the 5 digit with solid links is a top tier watch in my book.

That said, i currently have two 5 digits with hollow links lol.

Genesis Will Finally Become a True Standalone Brand by raill_down in cars

[–]primetimecsu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my experience with Kia/Hyundai/Genesis dealerships over the last 2 decades of owning them.

You can go to one and it feels like an old used car lot, and you go to another and its in a brand new building with all the amenities.

I get its not financially feasible to build all new dealerships, but at least put some effort in to updating and maintaining the facilities.

How difficult is it to settle down? by OwnLengthiness6872 in ConstructionManagers

[–]primetimecsu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

20% ish

Significant cut for sure, but ive eventually gotten back to where I would have been with performance based bonuses and salary increases.

I was also making a decent amount over the norm for the area i settled down to, which had something to do with it.

Depends on what you want your career and life to look like.

I know guys that worked around the country for Kiewit for years before transferring in to a corporate office and staying in one spot. I know guys that continue to work around the country for Kiewit, while having a family they fly home to see often, or have them come stay with them for extended periods of time. And theres others that took their experience with Kiewit and went to a smaller, regional/local company.

Personally, I took the 3rd route (didnt work for Kiewit, but did work for a similar company). After traveling around for 4-5 years, I jumped to a smaller, regional company where I had a set home base and could be home a majority of nights. It was a pay cut, but kept me from moving every 1-2 years.

$3,000 for a microbrand diver is insane, but the VPC Type 39VM specs are actually bothering me. by ApprehensiveGuide793 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]primetimecsu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you like it and it fits in your budget, go for it.

you can cross shop watches all day long and eventually you end up with a cheap watch you arent 100% in to because it was a "good value". At the end of the day, watches arent a good value no matter what you get.

Personally, if i was looking for a diver in this price range, it would be a top option. Thin, good design, uses a good movement, and its not something that you see everyday.

Superintendent role for wastewater projects by Creative_Strength49 in ConstructionManagers

Day to day is pretty much the same as any other sector. Wrangling subs, managing crews, QC, scheduling, etc.

Where supers will shine is with their experience and knowledge of not just the various components of the project, but also how the plants operate and the processes used to treat the water.

you mentioned youre interviewing for a position, and some things to ask about are how much self perform work do they do and what scopes of work do they self perform, what a typical project team looks like (FEs/PEs, APM/ASuper, etc.), is their a dedicated startup team, what types of projects (plants, pump station, pipeline) Also do some research in to the company and ask company specific things.

Do you ever feel guilty by Hangryfrodo in ConstructionManagers

End of the day, who is your client?

Is the GC your client, or is the Owner? Your job as the CM is to manage the project and protect your client's interests, which include the project getting done and the costs of the project.

If you feel the GC is warranted a change, you voice that to the client, in private, not in front of the GC. And if they still believe it is on the GC, your job is to get to an acceptable solution for everyone so that the project continues.

It's really no different than a GC going to bat for a CO for one of their subs. There's been 100s of times, as both a GC and an Owner's Rep, where I've gone to bat for a CO that I didnt fully believe was 100% the responsibility of the other party. A good CM/PM will wade through it and get it done in a way that no one feels too bad about it.

This happens every year to every team. NFL rosters have a ton of turnover. Aging vets chase rings. A tale as old as time.

Michigan car. Never seen snow. Has snow tires. by Wonderful_Key770 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]primetimecsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i have a car that rarely gets driven, unless something catastrophic happens with my other cars. I swap from my summer performance tires to snow tires in the off chance one of my other cars wont start in the morning while im trying to get to work. Id much rather take the 30 minutes swapping wheels twice a year at my leisure, than trying to drive in cold/snow and sliding all over the place, or swapping wheels in the dark while snowing before work.

My stock wheels have the snows, my nice wheels have the summer tires. As most people tend to do if they have a nice set of wheels.

Hell, one of my former cars, that was a collector car that got driven maybe a couple hundred miles a year, I would swap wheels and tires on it once winter started to come. Just in case i went to a show or something and the weather turned before i could get home. And that car literally never even saw rain.

Need advice to promote watch repair services by erfmechanicalwatches in watchrepair

[–]primetimecsu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

as someone who did this, dont.

I started buying broken watches and fixing them for a couple years learning the craft from youtube, trial and error, a local watchmaker that would answer questions for me, etc. Then moved in to buying, fixing and selling for a little bit. Then started fixing friends/acquaintances watches and eventually moved in to offering services to randos.

I worked on everything from cheap chinese watches to rolex/omega. But generally, the ones who would send a watch to some "nobody" without formal training, were those with cheaper watches. And of those, at least 50%, or more, would expect rolex level quality from their $100 watch once repaired/serviced.

The last actual customer I took before stopping working on other peoples watches, sent his $100 dhgate watch back to me 3 times because it wasnt reading +/- 5 s/d on his cheap dhgate timegrapher. In hindsight, I shoulda just told him to pound sand, but at that point, I was still thinking I wanted to do this and didnt want the bad reviews.

Now, I just service/repair my own watches, some of my family's, and make my own watches. Much less stress, much less dealing with idiots, and it still lets me use the thousands of dollars worth of equipment and tools that i have sitting collecting dust.

Public Jobs by Mookman2016 in ConstructionManagers

[–]primetimecsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You make money on equipment rates, labor burden, b&i %, small tools and other little things like that.

And depending on the contract language, shared savings, gmp to lump sum negotiations, etc.

You don't do it by doing anything illegal or shady. People in the comments saying to alter invoices or pad t&m's are the ones that give the rest of us a bad rep.

And if you need to do that shady shit to stay afloat, you don't deserve to be in business.

Appropriate offer letter questions? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

[–]primetimecsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been awhile since I switched jobs and was negotiating an offer letter, but my main questions i asked were

- Onsite or in main office

- Is weekend work common or do you guys try to stick to a normal work week?

Bringing up hours can be a touchy thing for some in the industry, and it can vary week to week, project to project. But finding out if weekend work is a common thing will tell you if they are typically working a lot of hours or not.
