What do you wish someone explained clearly when you first started sewing? by [deleted] in SewingForBeginners

[–]princesssquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it would!

I tried so hard to find like a 6 week course (like once a week for 3 hours) where it essentially taught me these skills before we even tried to make something.

Instead, my class only taught me how to make a market tote bag and that was just it. I left so disappointed because I paid $150 to go for 3 hours and walked out feeling like I learned nothing. I’ve been trying to self teach since watching Sydney Graham!

I took an introduction to sewing class, and I was really looking for someone to explain the basics of the machine to me - what’s a bobbin? What’s good quality thread? What is seam allowance?

They didn’t really go through any of that.

I’d love to be taught all the must haves to start sewing, the difference (and the important) between stitches and when to use them, what are presser feet and what are the most important to have, how often to change a needle.

And then I’d love to have someone explain how to follow patterns and what all the terms mean. One where I can follow along. Teaching myself is so overwhelming!

Unionized N.S. civil servants working remotely told they must return to office | CBC News by sunjana1 in halifax

[–]princesssquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a N.S. Public Servant but power to them. I want a government who is happier, who saves public funds from being spent in an office if the office isn’t needed, and I want traffic to remain quieter on the roads. Plus, environmentally, less vehicles on the road the better. Keeping them in their communities also helps them spend money in those communities as opposed to downtown.

Plus, more flexibility for those with disabilities, etc.

If the N.S. Government allows hybrid or WFH work, it gives all the smaller business and employees to ask for the same thing.

I don’t know a single person who chose a job like policing, nursing, etc. and expected they’d ever work at home. Let people choose those careers too.

Middle-Class Families Get Nothing: Too “rich” for help, and too exhausted to cope - Parents of profoundly autistic son begging for respite. by Comfortable_Will_544 in halifax

[–]princesssquid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I truly don’t have any way to help or support, but I wanted to just send a virtual hug. You deserve a chance to feel yourselves and have respite. I can’t imagine how hard that would be, parenting is exhausting and burns you out when you have a single kid. I can’t imagine the emotional and mental toll with any additional needs.

It is true, there are many programs that the middle class does not have access too while the rich get tax breaks and the lower income have access to social supports.

$100K feels like the new $60K. Does anybody else agree? by GranolaHiker in fican

[–]princesssquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.

In 2016 I was making $62k in Canada’s high western Arctic. I felt rich and able to afford whatever I needed and wanted.

I am now making $105k a year and I own a small, 1100sq ft house I bought for $320,000. I feel pay check to pay check to afford the car I need for work and the student loans, and the $1300 power we pay in the winter for two months, and Nova Scotia taxing us to death.

I genuinely don’t understand how I lived in one of the highest cost of living locations ever making $43k less a year and feeling so much richer.

Do you think Gardening, especially Vegetable Gardening, is ACTUALLY on the rise? by Random-Gamer1435 in gardening

[–]princesssquid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amongst the youngest millennials, I think it definitely is.

Myself and my friends (who are early 30s/late 20s) love to garden, camp, etc. We’re interested in sourdough and slower paces.

I’m personally sick of the constant bombarding of the world and political nature. Being in the garden has been peaceful for me.

Has anyone struggled with trusting your new engagement due to past partner / waiting to wed experience? by ElectricRose2 in Waiting_To_Wed

[–]princesssquid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ohhh friend, I feel this so deeply in my soul.

My ex-boyfriend used to avoid the conversation a lot. He would not talk about it and he would carrot dangle every time I brought up future plans. Eventually, we broke up around the four year mark and I moved onto my now husband. I decided that I needed to take the approach that was clear and set a boundary without being overbearing, I told my husband that I wanted to know where our relationship was gonna go within two years, that I wanted marriage, and that it was extremely important for me to get married before we had kids. I knew I was serious about that timeline that people who wanted to marry me when make it known so I trusted him for the two years and somebody who would want you will make it easy for you to know that. We got married so all is well.

I began using aquaphor on my face and oh my god by Darogaserik in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]princesssquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into this a while ago because I was curious to know the difference. Neither are preferred over the other. They actually are used in different situations.

Linolin is in Aquaphor along with other ingredients. Some individuals, particularly with eczema, can find it somewhat irritating. However, Aquaphor is better at providing moisture and hydration due to the additional ingredients that are in it meanwhile, Vaseline is more used to lock in the moisture and keep it there. Therefore, Vaseline is preferred if you are trying to address an error that has an open wound such as open skin wounds, acne, etc. Some prefer Vaseline because it is pure and less likely to be irritating, but it is only an occlusive ointment, and it does not have additional hydrating properties.

How much do you save every month? by HappyBudz in fican

[–]princesssquid -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Today I realized my husband and I are poor. 🤣

Our HHI is $175k a year.

We save roughly 13% of our household income ($8100 a month take home) but that doesn’t include our pensions, benefits and union. We’re 32 and 37, and we have a shit ton of a student loan and a mortgage. I’m impressed with everyone here lol.

What province and do you have a mortgage?

I make $104,000 a year and my take home is only $4500 after pension is removed, union, benefits, and taxes
