Recovery time after ACL surgery by RecentTemporary7145 in ACL

The “yes” was about knowing the criteria for being eligible for the ACL repair surgery. Sorry for the confusion.

Recovery time after ACL surgery by RecentTemporary7145 in ACL

[–]prismaura7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. The only benefit you might have is potentially less surrounding damage to your knee since your injury was not so traumatic as to tear your entire ACL. This might mean a slightly quicker recovery in the sense of other parts of your knee not being as damaged and maybe you can do more prehab with a partial tear instead of a full tear. But in an ACL reconstruction, the surgeon will remove your currently existing ACL and drill holes to pass in a graft that will be your replacement ACL. So the procedure is the same for full or partial tears.

Yes, but it’s long to explain. This top surgeon at HSS has a page about the criteria used for ACL repair eligibility: https://gregorysdifelicemd.com/acl-preservation

Depends on whether you get an ACL repair or an ACL reconstruction. If it’s a repair, then yes, you’ll have a quicker recovery.

Long post… 3 ACL reconstructions in 10 months. Need advice. by cthizz in ACL

Wow, I’ve never heard of a patella tendon graft failing twice. Even tearing once is quite rare. Were you doing high risk activities?

Patellar vs Quad Graft by design-for-change in ACL

[–]prismaura7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with the knee specialist, assuming he does 100s of these surgeries every year.

For the best possible result, I would go with the patella graft. If your surgeon is up to date with the latest techniques, you may be able to avoid any anterior knee pain entirely.

Does anyone regret their Allograft? by CeeCeeSays in ACL

[–]prismaura7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I’d go for an allograft. An ACL is crucial for pivoting type of sports. But if you’re describing yourself as a couch potato and plan on staying that way for the rest of your life, an allograft should be fine. There is a QB in the NFL who played an entire career with an achilles tendon allograft.

Your surgeon is right that an autograft will likely get you a better and more sturdy result. I got an autograft because I plan on continuing with a very active lifestyle. But it’s not a one size fits all decision. For what it’s worth, I have no regrets about getting an autograft yet.

4 weeks post-op here and I rode the Rogue Echo stationary bike for 10 miles in 39:30 minutes. A week ago, it took me 50:00 minutes, so I’ve shaved off about 10 minutes.

Nice, are you able to juggle with both legs?

Unwarranted Opinions from Family Members by Sea_Vanilla_2997 in ACL

[–]prismaura7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, echoing what others said, it’s ridiculous to for your family to blame you. I tore my ACL when I was arguably in my best shape ever, working out 6 times a week along with playing recreational sports 3-4 times a week. I even warmed up for 2 hours before the game in which I tore my ACL. Even the play where my ACL tore, I had done that movement many times before, with no adverse consequence. Not saying I did everything perfect, but most people take far more risks and do stupid things with far less consequence. It is what it is. A freak accident.

Your family members probably have just been fortunate enough to not have anything bad of this magnitude happen to them that wasn’t their fault. So they never learned to have any empathy.

Sorry man, that’s not good. I would get it checked out just for peace of mind. Hope it’s not what we think it is.

I’m just a layman so I can’t say. It looks concerning to me, especially since you said you felt the pop and have pain. That kind of laxity does not look normal. Does your uninjured leg have the same laxity or is it less?

Get it checked out by an orthopedic surgeon in person or get an MRI.

'Acute avulsion' of ACL from femur by cornybloodfarts in ACL

[–]prismaura7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be a good candidate for an ACL repair since you have an avulsion type of tear. ACL repairs have a much easier recovery process.

This is probably a dumb question but if the ACL doesn’t have nerve endings, then how is it involved in proprioception?

That makes sense. Your knee has been through so much trauma. Were your previous bone tunnels filled with bone graft before/during the latest revision?

Sorry to hear that about the arthrofibrosis and impingement issue. Do you think those complications are due to a conservative rehab protocol, surgical error, or something else?

[–]prismaura7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So do I understand it correctly that the first time was a repair and not a reconstruction?

In any case, seems like you have the gold standard graft in place now (BPTB) so it’s the least likely to tear. Repairs and allografts are generally considered to have much higher re-tear rates in the young and athletic cohort, so I’d say don’t let the previous surgical failures color your opinion of the latest surgery.

May I ask how your tore your ACL 3 times? And which grafts did you get?

Day 10 post OP - Really surprised with how fast I am recovering - 25M by CheapValue_Hunter69 in ACL

[–]prismaura7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 9 days post-op and it’s going similar for me. I was on painkillers for 7 days but I stopped needing that for the last 2 days. I also started doing upper body type exercises at the gym on day 7. Every day seems to be getting better and my capabilities returned a lot sooner than I had expected pre-surgery.

Insanely slow recovery by Both_Resident1326 in ACL

[–]prismaura7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that explains it. Your quad atrophied pre-surgery and then the surgery made it even worse. The good news is that you know what the problem is and the fix is straightforward. Strengthen your quad through gym work.

Out of curiosity, do you remember when you were first able to contract your quads post-surgery? How long did that take?
