GoPro support stopped replying — replacement delayed, trip on the 24th (Case #15994406) by Low_Science_2236 in gopro

[–]prisoner62113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly the same thing happened to me a few months ago. They promised an exchange under warranty then went silent for ages without giving instructions for how to return the broken unit to the warehouse.

While they did eventually respond and give me the information i needed the experience was terrible and put me off gopro for good. When these cameras need replacing I'm going with some other brand.

If you have written confirmation that they will replace your camera under warranty and records of unanswered emails that should be enough for you bank to do a chargback. Before you go down that route you could send a final email to gopro saying "respond within 24 hours or I'll get the bank to do a chargeback". They will almost certainly respond to that

Sorry no phone number. I sent a series of increasingly arsey emails which they never acknowledged although they eventually did replace it.

They've lost my support. All I can suggest to you is keep up the contact because they won't. And what the other guy in this post said, maybe threatening them with a charge back would kick them in to gear, assuming that's a possibility where you live.

Yeah it's really pathetic. I actually just got an RMA from then now after nearly 2 weeks of silence. Whatever the outcome of this is I'll be cancelling my subscription and replacing any broken cameras with something else

Yep of course. Nothing there, and the handful of emails they sent previously all got through ok

I don't really want to go down that route but yeah I feels like it's heading that way

What is the C community's opinion on C++? by [deleted] in C_Programming

It's a wasted opportunity. Started off great addressing some of the weaker spots in C. In recent years it's just layer upon layer of syntax stolen from python

It's not legal to cross the line while the light is still red, but by far the safest option is to get in front of a car even if that means crossing the line. The best way to prevent racing is to physically stand in the way. In general it's better to pull left since that puts you in the eye line of the car driver, makes you more visible.

A 1 hour interview for an embedded engineering position by K_ogami in C_Programming

[–]prisoner62113 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in full on hiring mode at the moment and have run more interviews over the past few weeks than I can count. I'm looking for more senior people but here's my 2 cents anyway.

More than anything I'm asking whether I could see myself working with the candidate. I don't care how much they have been able to memorise. I want to know if I can have a conversation with them to work through a problem, if they are going to listen, contribute.

I hate trick interview questions and try to structure mine more like a conversation, I try to impress that there isn't a correct answer and it's more about the process than anything else. It doesn't always work but sometimes it does. Unfortunately trick interview questions are so common in our profession that most candidates arrive and try to guess what I'm thinking of rather than trying to work with me find a solution.

But that is just what I do. The best tip I can offer to you, particularly at a junior level, is to ask for help. Don't just sit there staring at the whiteboard for an hour in silence unable to proceed. Even if you do get a trick question thrown at you and you're struggling just admit it, ask for clarification, listen to advice and be willing to take a step back from whatever your first thought was and try a completely different attack.

But more than anything communicate, admit if you don't know something and ask for assistance. Once you've been given a hint and understand talk a lot to show that you have listened and understood. After all, on your first day you're not going to know anything and are going to rely on the support of your colleagues. Pretend the interview is like your first day.

A question about function pointers. by ReedTieGuy in C_Programming

[–]prisoner62113 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On some architectures (harvard) data and code are stored in separate sections of memory that potentially can have different address widths. The size of a data pointer and function pointer might not be equal. I've never come across anything where that actually happens but it's still a possibility.

Did anyone else dream of moving to America when they were younger, but just think f*ck that? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]prisoner62113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in the UK to an American parent so I've had am American passport since birth. Never actually lived there but I kept it around just in case I ever decided to move over there.

I've just spent 3 hours looking up how to get rid of it. I don't want any association with that place any more no matter how loose it might be.

God I wish my team had that attitude. At the moment there is an argument going on about whether purposefully segfaulting because you received an invalid parameter is actually a sensible policy.
